I spent sooooooo many hours playing SOCOM against a couple buddies....Holy cow.  This could cause me to get divorced, lose my business, and my dog to move out on me.

Nothing I have seen indicates that it's an MMO.  It's souped up Battlefield 2.

There is character development?

Yes. I posted some about it in the bullet list. Here is some more:

Quote
When you first start to play MAG you create your MAG account. There are no fees to play the game beside the cost of the actual game on the disc. There is no MMORPG tax. You must join one of the three armies and customize your armor and weapons. Fighting in battles will earn you experience points that you can use to get better equipment, skills and eventually go up in rank. When you go up in rank in MAG there are new benefits and responsibilities. You can be promoted to command a squad, a platoon and a company by moving up the chain of command. When a superior officer gives you an order there is nothing forcing you to do it but if you do obey orders you will be rewarded with more XP. If you make a key contribution to the battle you will be even rewarded with more XP. Everyone has free will but if you don't follow orders you are not going to advance your military career in the MAG.

You can customize your face, outfit (from the selection that matches your army), and game voice. There is no soldier class system but you can customize your load out and save three different load outs to choose from in each battle.

There is a themed interface to match your army, in game messages, friends online status. There is pretty much all you need for "clan support" but it is not called "clan support" because your butt is property of your army not some clan.

Ok, so it's a souped up Battlefield 2142.

Still don't think that makes it an MMO.

What is stopping you from saying it is?

MMO, FPS, I don't really care, looks like it will be hot. But it seems to be more MMO than not.

Lack of world persistance other than "levels" and limited number of players in a given combat I think are the indicators here that it's not an MMO, and is, instead, Battlefield XXXX, CoD 15, etc.

edit:  Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating.  I have a fair amount of respect for Zipper and I think MAG will turn out fairly good.  It's just not an MMO.

I'd like to know more about this 256 player thing.

If that means 256 players per instance that has nothing to do with any larger meta-game, then souped up BF2142 it is.

If it's 256 players per single battle that has some kind of impact on a larger campaign, I'd call it an MMO.

But in either case, it's still not as cool as PlanetSide.

Other MMO's have persistence other than levels? Limited numbers? 256? Is guild wars an MMO?

Does anyone read the stuff i post?!?!?  cry

All game modes, except Suppression, contribute to the "Shadow War"

256 is on ONE MAP.

The only thing that seems to push the boundary of MMO is that you can't switch teams on a map by map basis (which also leads me to wonder how it balances teams for this..), and that the shadow war thing provides access to new gear. But beyond that? It's an FPS (admittedly a really cool looking one!) with some level of player stat tracking and persistence based on that.

The "Shadow War" seems to be a fancy way of saying "the faction that is doing the best in a particular game mode gets some bonuses when playing in that mode".

True. I wish there was more info about what it is, other than the bonuses they have already discussed.

There's been a lot of games that are pushing the "massive" part of the definition. I personally put the mark at an even thousand now. Just to seperate team FPSes from online worlds.

Instancing is making MMOGs more like FPSes too. Has been since Guild Wars started fucking things up.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

I think the MMOG definition is just about due to be retired.

Earning experience for obeying orders. An awesome, abusable mechanic.

I've never claimed Guild Wars was an MMO either though.  Guild Wars is Diablo with a 3d matchmaking lobby and shittier loot, but better pvp, but this is a derail.
