And I now have a PS3 as a leaving present. Not having paid much attention to consoles in general and the PS3 in particular, what are the highpoints of the PS3 experience, what should be on my shopping list?

I have an Xbox 360 already and I like the Soul Calibur and Gran Turismo franchises from previous PS incarnations if that helps.

I have an Xbox 360 already and I like the Soul Calibur and Gran Turismo franchises from previous PS incarnations if that helps.

For me the high points have been:

Metal Gear Solid 4 - Just a masterpiece front to back.  I didn't really play any of the other MGS games beyond a few hours of the first and I was rarely completely lost. I'm sure I missed some details, but they do a good job of bringing you along if you're new to the story.  It's a bit long winded at times, but if you can get past that it was my GOTY.   Good action, good audio and visuals, and a great sense of style throughout.

Valkyria Chronoicles - A great take on the turn based, military combat game (blends some real time aspects that don't detract from the turn based nature).  Really well crafted and a lot of fun. Like my previous mention, this title can get a bit long winded, but all of it is skippable.  The story is pretty mature and serious for the most part.  Heck, you see civies get gunned down from behind in the first moments of the game.  The art in this game is like what Okami did with watercolor except this is with pencil.  The entire game (minus some UI) looks like it's been drawn with colored pencil.  It's remarkably gorgeous.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune -  Fun.  It's like Indiana Jones but without George Lucas fucking it up.  Gun sequences feel a bit cumbersome early on, but they get easier with new weapons and even bad FPS players like myself get good at it.  It's just cool game and I'm really glad I played it.

Honorable mentions:

Disgaea 3:  It's not as compelling as 1 or 2, IMO, but it's got some great new wrinkles to the combat system.  It looks like a PS2 game also.

LittleBigPlanet:  Reminds me why I'm not a huge fan of platformers. This game is really fun at times, looks fantastic and has a great sense of humor.  Some of the later levels are controller throwing frustrating for me so I kind of gave up.

Not a big FPS (especially on the console) fan so I'm no help there.  And Forza 2 sated my driving needs on a console.

If you like building, get LittleBigPlanet and endure the platforming to unlock materials.

I'd say get Ratchet & Clank Future is you are a franchise fan or if you enjoy 3D platformers and/or blowing up shit.  Not the best of the series but still very good.

Nice one Iain, that's a cool leaving present! Beats the shit out of the strange book and bad bottle of wine I got from my last place!

Anyway, I got a PS3 a couple of months ago and highlights for me have been:

1) A uPnP media-serving NAS with a metric fuckton of music & films on it. Very handy.
2) MGS4 - very, very awesome.
3) Dead Space - lights off, volume up, bowels empty.
4) LittleBigPlanet - cute, fun, great for co-op.
5) Resistance 2 - fun, brainless shooter. Co-op sposed to be v good but not got around to that myself yet.
6) Prince of Persia - I'm loving this far more than the simplicity of it would seem to warrant.
7) WipeOut HD - from PSN, v cheap. Fantastic for some occasional head-melting speed racing.
8) Fallout 3 - just don't expect much from the storyline.

Of course 3 & 8 aren't exclusives so ignore if you've already played them on the PC or something.

I'll throw in my 2 cents

Resistance 1 = super cheap now, good story, story is co-op too
Resistance 2 = super pretty, ok story, i like the levels, co-op is seperate from story (totally awesome in its way), skirmish vs. mode is nice
LittleBigPlanet = i like it
Valkyria Chronicles = great game, i like the story too
Wipeout HD = fun, cheap, buy disposable controllers b/c you will break them out of anger
PixelJunk Monsters = fun, ceap, again buy disposable controllers

All the above games are fun either single player or multi player (except Valkyria Chronicles)

I gave away Resisitance for the PS3, fps on console is still meh to me.

Uncharted, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Folklore, and Soul Calibur 4 (if you can find it cheap/used, it's amusing enough. I'd put it as not as much fun as SC2, but still worth some hours.)
And GTA4 if you don't have it in another format. It's annoying, grey, and tedious at times, but it's still fun to steal an Ice Cream Truck and go on a rampage.

So far I'd highly recommend:

MGS4
Saints Row 2
GT5:P
Little Big Planet - This game with friends either PSN or local or both + beer is some of the best fun I had with the console.

I'd get GTA 4 for the X360, you know, for the DLC.

New to PS3 myself - I can definitely recommend Uncharted, and I'm now working my way through MGS4, which is also great in its own special way (interactive movie).

That's good to know, I stopped playing it a couple of weeks ago because I was finding the early gun bits very frustrating. Plus I had MGS4 & GTA4 competing for my attention. But knowing it gets better now I shall definitely remember to go back to Uncharted :)

The bit in the jungle where I first have to fight through a set of columns where mercs are firing on me and tossing grenades and whatnot, that shit is hard even after I finished the game.  Persist.

Uncharted is so vastly superior to GTA4 by the end that it's not even fair that GTA4 be competing for time.

MGS4 is good competition though.

Due to the fact your now working on a MMOFPS. You need to get Warhawk for the PS3. Also, play planetside (Not on PS3). If you have played it in the past, do so again.

I myself have been playing Ninja Gaiden Sigma, having gotten my PS3 this month and not having played the XBox one.  If you are into these types of action games (consistency based, I would call them), then this is about as good as it gets.

After playing the horror that was PS2 Shinobi and loving DMC3, it's amazing how many things they got right in Ninja Gaiden.  The camera and controls are perfect in this game, and those are the two things that most of these games usually fail at.

So I got this game delivered earlier this week, had stuff to do but finally got around to firing it up last night. Massive thanks to whoever it was that recommended this title to me earlier in the thread (fake edit: it was Rasix). I'm not at all a fan of anime style artwork but this game has a really awesome art style despite that and it plays very nicely - although I've spent more time watching QTEs than controlling my guys so far.

I may write a BIIF for it if it's not too old by now.

GT5:P was a bit of a disappointment however. The racing physics are really solid but no upgrades for your cars? How am I supposed to play out my digital petrolhead fantasies with stock vehicles?

Uncharted seems like a better Tomb Raider so far, my wife has been playing it more than I have.

LBP has been the share the controller late evening unwinding fun.

Not had a pop at Soul Calibur 4 yet but my wife was very excited about the customisation options when she had a go earlier this week.

Let's test that hypothesis.  Did you enjoy episode 2?

Valkyria Chronicles, my bad I ended up doing a machete editing job on the post and forgot to proofread it for clarity afterwards.
