Fucking great, Roth knocked it out of the park, they got just the right mix of seriousness and funny to make great TV. It's like Burn Notice sans as much camp.
Definitely adding this one to the DVR.
Edit to ask Trippy: How did they do with the translation, is most of the stuff he's spouting at least close to the truth, or is it all bullshit, according to your book?

Coincidentially I was just reading about the whole "mind reading"/micro-expression thing in Malcolm Gladwell's book Blink so it was interested to see how they translated those things to a TV show.

It's just one part of Blink (Chapter 6) and Gladwell is just a writer of pop psychology/sociology, he's not one of the people doing research in the area, but yeah based on what he wrote about in the book, the show is pretty accurate (so far). The clip with Kato Kaelin in the show is actually mentioned in the book in the same context (a micro-expression of scorn/disgust). The quip about scorn in marriages leading to divorce is in the book as well (though in a different chapter and a slightly different context). Paul Ekman and Wallace Friesen are the ones who codified these micro-expressions and what they mean into the Facial Action Coding System or FACS, and that's part of what this show is based on, apparently. John Gottman is the one who has done the research on how to predict if a marriage is going to end in divorce (mentioned above) though his is a bit broader than just facial expressions and includes things like tone of voice and patterns of speech. |

This was enormously enjoyable.
I really don't like all the: it's a cop show, but with XXX!!
But this pulled it off really well. I wish they would be more consultant and less consultant+we capture crooks.
Agree with Nerf in that it's like Burn Notice but the sole focus is on people.

I agree. I also kept thinking the show was a bit repetitive, but I still truly enjoyed this show. The casting is so spot on that even though there are a lot of repetitive aspects that it's too good to even care about it being so, it's ridiculous how well done this is. The little things on this show have been great too, such as the FBI agent opening the back door when picking up Roth for him to get into but instead Roth just being a prick as usual takes the front seat  good shit. This has definitely been my favorite show since it came out. I just hope that my initial worry during the pilot doesn't come true that this show keeps doing the exact same thing over and over. Adding Phifer's character to the cast (agreed that it is a great addition) hopefully helps prevent that. |

I thought he was fantastic, I don't watch Rescue Me so I was unfamiliar with him but I really liked him in the serial killerrapist role. Also, and maybe I'm alone on this, he reminded me of a younger, even more cool (as if that was possible!), Billy Zane. |

The guy was not actually a "serial killer" but a serial rapist and serial blinder of women. Still a very bad person but he was not a killer.
