I don't know about other people, but often times when I listen to music I think that certain tracks would work well in games, and even imagine certain scenarios that the music might be attached to. For example a KMFDM or Ministry track that would work in a typical machine/factory level. So I figured I'd make this thread for people to provide clips to music then explain how it would work in a game. First, I give you two tracks from Dream Theater's "Scenes from a Memory" Starting at 4:10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiACKhmqEhEStarting at 2:00 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-w3A1KOPZcIf you don't hear this music and think of a certain game series something is wrong with you. The second track would be perfect for the Castlevania 4 level that had "Paula Abghul" and "Fred Ascare" as bosses.

I believe the diagram you're looking for goes something like this:
Bach -> Stravinsky
Every guy in between those two you can use as well.

For driving games, the Krautrock beat which was originally called "the Apache beat" and which is now known as "motorik" is ideal. Anything with the snare on every 2nd or 3rd of four beats, with bass drum on each non-snare beat and the high-hat playing on every eighth note in medium tempo works. The most well known example is Kraftwerk's Autobahn, but a better example is Neu!'s Hallo Gallo. But there are modern examples including ones where the tempo picks up which are even better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZ9KB5eJ7UEThe screaming Finnish vocals means this would be a rally driving game. El Stew - Arab MafiaI envision a 60's Spy/Hip Hop/Ninja game loosely based on Enter the Dragon ( ). You're crawling on some ceiling beams in an Asian whorehouse, trying to be concealed. You need to make your way to the end of the building, to slice the Big Boss' throat in secret.

Murcof works with most games. Roguelikes and space games especially.
Autechre sounds good while doing anything. Tri Repetae+ and Quaristice.Quadrange.ep.ae dominate my mp3 player.

Carbon Based Lifeforms - Or Plan B - Always reminded me of the in-game ambient loops from Master of Orion II. Solar Fields - Cocoon Moon is a favorite. I always thought he'd make great game music. Seems DICE agreed with me.I have a fake-"official" soundtrack for Asheron's Call 1 that includes a lot of Dead Can Dance and Medieval Baebes, in addition to pieces of the soundtracks from Gladiator, The Last Temptation of Christ, and Escaflowne: A Girl in Gaea. I also have a big swack of songs I've picked out as a soundtrack for my space opera Civ4 mod. I'd have to go home to get a list of them all. Obviously a lot of spacey ambient, though.

I just want Jeremy Soule to write music for every game. Is that so hard?

I'd make some surreal atmospheric racing game that like Wipeout, but paced like a normal racer, and include nothing but Bowie and Bowie like singers. Pablo Picasso (yes, yes.. modern lovers.. but bowie's is better for driving) Into the GalaxyDark Entries
