I saw a scary Ronald McDonald picture in the funny pictures thread and thought it would be fun to see what scary stuff we can find and share.

This pic gives me the willys.

Sorry, forgot the NSFW.

The apparently nonsensical photo is a recreation (in Witkin's own, very strange way) of Leda & The Swan, Leda being the mother of Helen and the swan being Zeus. Arty farty stuff in other words  why so serious?

So what are the limits in this thread? I'm assuming close up footage of torture or people actually being murdered in cold blood is off limits, but are w limited to artsy stuff or are crime scene photos and other real life stuff stuff fair game? There's stuff making the rounds lately that even I can't stomach to finish, like those three russian teen serial killers recording themselves killing a guy with hammers.

If you are going to post something that depicts, say, a real person suffering or a real corpse, or death, please be kind enough to spoiler-tag it with a warning. I do not care for that stuff, not even one bitty bit.

I love the artsy scary stuff, pranks, even mad stunts like this one

I'll know not to look in this thread from work again, but bear in mind that spoiler tags don't stop the browser loading inlined images, so for those who (like me) notice this thread for the first time from work it might be worth labelling the thread NSFW.

And I'm with Engels.  The sort of people that seek out that sort of snuff have problems, and I have no desire to become less of a person by desensitising myself to others' suffering.

1)
Whats his story?
He's an American photographer who claims that as a child he witnessed a three car accident in which a little girl's decapitated head was ejected from the car and rolled to his feet, staring up at him with fishmouth. He spent his childhood collecting articles and information about mental disorders, physical defects, disease, human anomalies, etc. As a teen he would photograph carnival freaks. As an adult he began shooting extreme fetishists and human corpses, or pieces of corpses, that he's posed/modified to suit his needs. Ranging from things like that first picture linked to all the way to things like a bowl of fruit with parts of a human body mixed in. His work is more complicated than that, and he's very adept at darkroom processes to achieve the "antique" look you see. Not sure where he gets his corpses, but I'd read he was travelling out of the country because they're too hard to get here in the states.

So for those of you who don't want to see pictures of a human corpse, tough shit, you already did and you can't unsee it. Thank apocrypha.

2) The bird. It's a fucking bird. It looks way worse than it is - that's about the size the it's neck should be. 4/5ths of what you see of a bird is just feathers, if it was meat they wouldn't be able to fly because of the weight. It might have gotten an infection later and died, but otherwise it would have to be a minor wound that just bled alot.

3)
Quote from: Endie

Oh you can fuck right the fuck off the pedestal you think you're on. You're already much less of a person - not because you're desensitising yourself, because you have no fucking empathy for them to begin with. It's not suprising you wouldn't want to see third world children's deformities from treatable diseases, the wounded and dead from wars, long term homeless living with flyblown gangrenous limbs, and a host of other tragic things documented on film. All a direct end result of the job you personally do and the fucking wretched economic doctrine it enables. It's very easy to disregard the statistics and abstracts of the casualties of market capitalism, but if you were any sort of human at all and saw the actual results in color you'd resign out of self loathing and flee to a monastery. I could go on, but since it would be rude to turn this thread into a immigrant to the Politics forum consider this aspect of it closed, close your eyes, bow your head and weep for the hollow wretched thing that is your blackened, withered sense empathy and brotherhood with your fellow man.

That aside, as a nursing student I figure I need to be as desensitized to horrific wounds and trauma as I can be.

4) I thought you all wanted to see scary stuff, not deviantArt toons and carnie chest hair styles. The only people who should find anything fictional scary - especially this stuff - are children. Little retarded monkey children. Which would be scary because I bet they throw a lot more poop than regular monkey children.

I dunno, Bob. That looks like a Gull whose spine somehow has popped out and it's still alive, not a swan, goose or other long-necked bird with some bloodied feathers.   Pretty damn creepy.

As for your larger rant, I get what you're going for but I think Endie was referring more to the asshat /b/ tards  who like posting suicides, rapes, murders and other shit because they get off on it.  Not out of some "look at the human condition and the tragedy of poverty" point they're trying to make.   The latter I can stomach, the former makes my rational brain ill and triggers the "kill them all" bit of my primate brain.

Here ya go. teehoooo....

You ask for a hamburger, I give you a hamburger. You raise it to your lips and take a bite. Your eye twitches involuntarily. Across the street a father of three falls down the stairs. You swallow and look down at the hamburger in your hands. I give you a hamburger. You swallow and look down at the hamburger in your hands. You cannot swallow. There are children at the top of the stairs. A pickle shifts uneasily under the bun. I give you a hamburger. You look at my face, and I am pleading with you. The children are crying now. You raise the hamburger to your lips, tears stream down your face as you take a bite. I give you a hamburger. You are on your knees. You plead with me to go across the street. I hear only children's laughter. I give you a hamburger. You are screaming as you fall down the stairs. I am your child. You cannot see anything. You take a bite of the hamburger. The concrete rushes up to meet you. You awake with a start in your own bed. Your eye twitches involuntarily. I give you a hamburger. As you kill me, I do not make a sound. I give you a hamburger.

I honestly did not realise that those were photographs of actual human corpses. I'd never researched Witkin tbh, just seen some of his work and found it disturbing and fascinating.

My sincere apologies if seeing those upset anyone. I think they're incredible photographs and go way beyond just an attempt to shock with gruesomeness, but if anyone requests I'll remove them from my post without hesitation.

Thanks, Merusk, that's what I was trying to get across.  If someone like bob wants to defend the posting or viewing of snuff (judging by me asking folks not to do it here, and him explicitly describing such a request as being on a "pedestal") then all I ask is that the thread is marked as NSFW for the technical reasons I mentioned, so that nobody gets into trouble in their work.

Yes, I'm with Nietzsche on the long-term effects, but I'm also a libertarian, and if people want to find stuff like that, then so long as they are adults (so Schild doesn't get into potential trouble) then that's their choice.

And fuckdammit I autopilot-opened this thread to respond from in work.  I wish there was an unsubscribe-from-threads option.

Many of us who grew up in the US sat through Night and Fog in a Social Studies or History class, and already have seen one of the world's worst atrocities on film. The corpses aren't scary, what's scary is that any of us can become damaged enough to become a monster.

This is also scary:

The next time you're alone in your room, turn down the lights. Think of something on your body that varies in length, such as hair. It must be clearly viewable from your perspective. Grab a ruler and, looking in the mirror, quickly grab a hair at random; you must confuse it. Hold it in position as best you can and note the length. Look down. Yours will be different.

Don't look back up.

Don't turn your back to that mirror ever again.

Went to see one of his shows in Manchester earlier in the year and was deeply underwhelmed tbh. Once you'd got over the initial "oh wow those are real dead people" feeling, which took about 30 seconds, there wasn't much more to it.

There simply wasn't enough in the way of labelling of the specimens and sections. Unless your anatomical knowledge was excellent you could not tell what was what very easily and it wasn't that interesting. Sad thing was that there was clearly some great skill used to prepare the exhibits (particularly the whole-body sections) but you could only tell that if you knew anything about pathology and sample preparation. At the end of the day it felt like just an extension of a Victorian freak show for some reason.
