ok.. go to free.grisoft.com and get AVG-FREE, uninstall that norton garbage and put AVG in its place. Run the full scan

2nd.. go to lavasoft.com and get ADAWARE, install and run that

3rd get SPYBOT and run that

4th get TuneupUtilities2009.. its free for 30 days, install and run it

you may need to be in safe mode to download these files.

why? A neighbor brought me his laptop, it had Norton, and a problem. It would turn on, and could not move anywhere off the desktop. I ran norton from safe mode.. 0 errors, then I did what I suggested above.... 145 virus found using avg, 100+ with spybot and 100+ with adaware, and tuneup utilities fixed over 300 registry errors.. 6 hours later, I returned a 'faster than new' laptop.

Be careful with that AVG program. A recent version wiped out a critical Windows DLL rendering many many machines inoperable.

I've been using AVG for about a decade (ack) with no problems and no viruses (though it has blocked a few threats).  I like it.

Use Kaspersky best virus software I've ever used or seen though you will have to pay for it, Avast is the best free one to my knowledge. AVG is truly awful it seems to attract Viruses I have to fix my GF's parents machine on a regular basis cause they use it. Also don't use limewire it requires you switch off your firewall this is the worst thing you can do and aswell as being riddled with adware and other shit is another gaping backdoor into your system stick with torrents or if it's just porn you want  myfreepaysite.com / redtube.com

I'm going to escape, come back, wipe this place off the face of the Earth, obliterate it and you with it.

I've been using AVG for years with no problem and the one time I actually managed to get infected with a real virus (it was nasty enough that it actually disabled ZoneAlarm) AVG cleaned it out just fine.

I've heard good things about Avast (never used it myself) my only complaint with AVG is that, while it seems capable at detecting threats, it's not particularly great at removing them

I've heard a lot of horror stories with AVG and experienced some though I have also heard people have no problems with it it's nowhere near as bad as Norton that's the shittiest program known to man. My main gripe with it is it's a system hog and has some weird side effects. I got a pirated copy of Kaspersky and ran it for a few months til eventually they detected it and blocked me, so happily knowing it was good as I had been lead to believe I forked out for a years sub it's extremly unintrusive, doesn't take up much RAM and all the viruses I have opened it's removed.

i totally would...i absolutely hate norton...but my damn school requires it to be on my computer because they are fucking retards and think its amazing...

i will look into installing either AVG or Avast and some of the other ones...but i might jsut end up wiping my system...it will probably depend on if i can find my recovery disks...lol

I vote for AVG also, it cleans off the nasty pornopopup junk that nothing else seems to get.  Never tried Avast.

Run all the cleaner stuff, it will probably work and you won't have to reinstall and make yourself crazy looking for a driver for your network hardware.

Why don't you try our other games?

Amarr HM is also a cancer attractor - mentions Limewire, encourages use of torrents, then provides links to porn.

Yep, brain cancer attractor.

If you don't mind running a brower-based scanner I recommend MS's Windows Live OneCare scanner:

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/default.htm

You can run it in Windows Safe Mode with Networking to cut down on the stuff that's loaded at startup. It's quite slow but in terms of the free stuff it did the best job of finding the spyware that got onto my dad's computer. You'll still want to run a variety of stuff cause no single program will find them all.

If you really want to wrack up your computer protection arsenal, go check out PC World's article 50 tools to speed up your PC. Most of them are free, some utilities have a trial and cost around $20 to $40 to fully activate. Settings reconfiguration, program and network optimization, disc and registry cleanup, security, etc. Should all help your PC run better.

I've lost skill training because of computer trouble and some decrapafying has helped. Last time however it was a case of accidentally resetting my DSL modem settings and all I had to do to get packets flowing again was to re-enter my username and password.

Ubuntu worries me I'm not sure if I'm ready to make that step, I'd rather buy a crapton of ram and stick with vista cause that's the only problem I have with it being a ram hog.

Actually, Ubuntu works straight off the 25 mins install and has all hardware detected properly. Install XP or vista properly and you are looking at a few hours wasted and still a heap of errors in the event viewer. For day to day use there isn't anything to learn with ubuntu, the only learning you need is if you want to tailor the OS for your own needs. The only downside to using linux is games, but hey, Eve Online works fine with it.

Vista only recognises 3.3 Gig of RAM unless you buy the ultimate version afaik. I've a pretty hot PC at home running 4 Gig on vista, it only recognises 3.3 and the performance is still slower than 1 gig with linux.

You should download the live CD and run it from boot. It doesn't install anything and lets you try it out and see if its for you. If you find you like it, my advice would be to partition the drive and dual-boot. Having said that, if you are running vista, its a fucker for deleting the boot loader, so you may find that your dual boot disappears and you are back to a single windows only machine.

I'd personally recommend Ubuntu, Kubuntu (windows style GUI), or Open SUSE.

I have linux and windows (vista and xp) machines running for various purposes, and each has their uses.  But it's disingenuous to suggest that someone's life won't be a crapload more awkward if they swap their games machine to a linux distro.

Also, I have a 4GB, 32-bit vista ultimate machine.  You allocate the remainder to act as a window for the graphics card, so it's not wasted.  The result of that amount of memory is that I can happily run four (classic) Eve clients for mining on the same box.  I could probably push it a bit and run more if necessary.

That said, I admit that this is not the thread for that particular opsys holy war.  I also use Emacs instead of vi, if any old school geeks are not yet fully inflamed.
