How is this at all political?  The pro-toddler-cockfighting faction of the community is not very large or vocal. |

I kept saying that to myself, but our fellow man has a way of suprising us all. Somebody here is going to read the article, then do more exhaustive research on it, find out the soldier was closet gay, or had just signed a Blackwater contract, or kept nude pictures of Margaret Thatcher and it'll all go downhill from there.
By the way, my comment was in no way a criticism of you posting this in Serious Business whatsoever. I do not hold you responsible (yet) for anything. Well, except for the war in Iraq and the market crash.

There was a similar case in the UK a while ago (last year I think) where a 2 year old boy and 3 year old girl were encouraged to fight each other by their mother and another woman and they filmed it. Found the story . Interestingly there's an armed forces link here too - the film was discovered when the kids father "returned from a tour of duty in Iraq and found the images on his digital camcorder". Edit: refraining from any comment on that or else, yeah, it'll go Politics    |

That's fucked up but I can kind of see it happening in a, "Man up and take those blows, don't be a sissy," kind of way. Like the next step up from telling your son to fight back when he comes home from having been beat down by bullies.
If this were a crazy person board I'd expect someone to come in and start talking about how kids today are too coddled and this kind of thing builds character, I think (hope) Tri's right that noone here would be in favour of this.

Most kids I see today are basically feral, their parents seem to not believe that their little monster needs to be taught manners or a basic level of civility.
Teaching toddlers to fight each other is just preparing them for their inevitable future.

I'd say that's a fair trade. Kid will smash faces at school.
But seriously, supposing he didn't take testosterone and stayed the hell away from nandrolones, which I doubt, what would be the side effects of that?

It's actually a pretty old story.  He's on steroid.  He's getting exploited by his father in law if I remember well, maybe his actual dad.  Used for freak show. |

I've heard reports that he isn't taking steroids, and that he has an extremely rare genetic disease somewhere along the lines of bully whippets. From wikipedia: "In 2004, a German boy was diagnosed with a mutation in both copies of the myostatin-producing gene, making him considerably stronger than his peers. His mother, a former sprinter, has a mutation in one copy of the gene. An American boy born in 2005 was diagnosed with the same condition." Maybe I'm just miixing it up with the 2005 kid ... Anyway, I do agree that the father was a psycho, he had the kid on a ridiculously strict diet and exercise regimen. |

It's actually a pretty old story. Not too long ago i heard a news story about the Amercian kid pictured above.  Court order prevents him from lifting weights anymore, until he's 18.  Not entirely sure i'm remembering correctly, but i think i am. |

That's one effect.  He also won't ever be as tall as he would have been without the exercise, and his ligaments and tendons are going to be all kinds of fucked up once he hits puberty and grows another half a foot.
Throw in some probable premature arthritis and (complete conjecture for this last one) early hair loss from all the extra testosterone in his system.  That last one depends more on his genetics, though.

Planes? Shit, I'm terrified to get in my car now! |
This isn't really related to this thread, other than because of the thread title. Yeah, there's some broken people around, but there's also plenty of absolutely lovely people too. I've just got back from a walk to my local post office, which is about 2 miles. It's treacherously icy this morning - we've had 2 days of slush and lastnight it froze again. Coupled with my fucked back it means that I had to do this walk very, very, VERY slowly and carefully. Holding onto people's garden fences & walls, reaching for every lamp post, walking in the road where there was nothing to hold onto and it was too icy. At one point I had to actually get down on my hands and knees to get up a sloping bit of icy pavement. 3 separate total strangers offered to help me. One helped me across an icy road, letting me lean on her quite heavily. One man offered to lend me his mobile phone if I needed to call for a lift or a taxi and one woman stopped her car and offered me a lift, which I declined because I was nearly home by that point. All complete strangers. People are awesome too.   |

Hehe yeah I was actually laughing to myself when I was on my hands and knees    It's important for me to try and get out and have a walk at least once a day. The only exercise I'm allowed to do is walking and swimming (and then only if I do the crawl, no breaststroke for me) and I can't drive to get to the swimming pool... so walking it is! Plus it helps keep the depression at bay which is fairly crucial for me at the moment. Once I realised how lethal the ice was I should probably have turned back but it was such a beautiful day I thought I stick with it. Glad I did in the end despite the -ness of it. |
