Well I'm not looking to upgrade motherboards until early next year. However, I want to play HL2 and Vampire NOW

Well given all the problems people are having with their Audigy cards in HL2 right now I'm not sure that would be the way to go.

Hmmm..so what way then? Creative is pretty much the primary sound card designer that I know of.

Yeah they are. If you go with an Audigy 2 it might work out for you, and if it doesn't initially you know that at some point either Valve or Creative will fix whatever the problem is. It's been a long time since I've used a sound card other than a Creative Labs one but other ones on the market include Hercules, M-Audio, and Turtle Beach. Another option if you are a headphone user is to get one of those USB headphones. The sound quality on those is actually very good, assuming the headphones that are connected are decent.

Ok. I broke down and spent a bit more than I wanted-

Antec Sonata Case

I think this is my motherboard

Processor

HDD

Memory (I think this is the right one)

I got a 16x version of this DVD drive

Video Card

Ended up buying XP Pro as well. Total with assembly was like $1530.

Edited to add- these are my best guesses from the website. I left my receipt at home, so I may have missed the exact model on some components, but you get the idea.

Cool enough. Like I said earlier, when you get the chance, buy the same model HDD, or at least the same capacity and run both of them in raid0. Actually it'd be best to just do it now instead of later, since you'd have to format. If you're gonna shell out that much, would 100 more dollars hurt? There's a noticable difference. It's not SCSI, but it's a good deal.
