Basically WoWAce is crushed by their bandwidth usage so they're teaming up with Curse to make a new SVN/addon distribution deal. That means their updater is going away and now you're gonna have to use Curse's closed-source, curse-account requiring client. Oh yeah, we've reached the dreaded point of "Premium" accounts now. Your money I guess goes to bandwidth and to actually paying mod authors through a "author rewards" program as well as some meaningless shit (No ads, fancy forum features, auto-addon updating).

So uh, basically I'm going to be updating all of my mods by hand now. Oh well, was good while it lasted.

Yup!  Those auto-downloader things never seemed to work right way back when, so I just edit my one add-on by hand.

I have my doubts about Wow Matrix as they don't show what version anything is and I've seen a fair number of mod authors gripe about them messing with versions.

I use(d) WAU (along with Curse) but there's also WUU at http://wuu.vagabonds.info/menu.php#gettingstarted that you may want to look into. It supports Curse, Wow ACE, Cosmos, CT and WoW Interface (but not WoWUI who've been working on updating their recently hacked autodownloader and dislike other people accessing thier stuff.)

Ace going over to Curse is sad but probably inevitable.

Wowmatrix uses their own cache of addons, which addon authors hate because they have no control over it.

WUU still works fine -- better than Curse, since it supports multiple sources.

Not really. Some addons hit your CPU hard and that causes an FPS drop but usually all most addons do is use more memory.

Recount and a few other mods are pretty CPU intensive but Unit Frame/Map/Action Bar mods don't really do much.

Plus I've got an addon that tells me which mods are using too much RAM and I just turn those mods off or tweak their settings :p

Fucking curse updater is annoying the crap out of me.  With WAU, I updated without externals.  When something screwed up my addons, it was easy to figure out what did it cause I could check the data of what mods were recently updated.  Curse updater not only doesn't bother to give me the option to update without externals, it doesn't seem to even bother to have a list of what it's updated, unless I look at the little progress boxes and write down the names in each one as they zip by.

That sounds a lot like the old ACE2 updater. Pissed me off. Using externals is supposed to be good for the system as mod authors can import in odd libraries but it never has really gelled imo. Plus it was annoying as hell before the external system was added because you had to keep a whole ace lib installation or risk downloading something only to have it not run until you'd tracked down specific versions of the library.

When the patch went live the URL files.wowace.com got taken down. That was how I had always updated my addons that were ACE-based. I still didn't use the Curse updater but I ended up getting most of my addons FROM curse. Soooooooo annoying. If anyone has an updater solution that isn't curse but can access files on their database as well as, ideally, wowinterface stuff please let me (us) know. The process for me was: go to curse, search for addon, click a link, click another link, click download, confirm mirror. Fucking ridiculous, I guess just hitting the addon once and having it download made me lazy and spoiled.

The best part is that some addons like X-Perl Unit Frames haven't been properly uploaded or updated on curse's website so if I load up their updater and use it, my unit frames get broken until I can redownload it from wowinterface. Also there's no way to tell their shitty updater to not update specific addons.

...and Clearfont2 is broken. I want that mod back goddamn it!

Right-click the addon in the updater list to tell it not to update that one.  I've got it working mostly ok (still with externals) and at some point they added a log so you can see what it's updated.

How do you get around every GD addon pack using Gatherer and having the updater ask you if you want it from the pack? Or do I just need to get it updated from one of them and it'll stop asking me?

Wouldn't be so bad and I'd just use WUU ( http://wuu.vagabonds.info/menu.php#gettingstarted ) but I use Curse for my WAR addons and I kinda like having it available for WoW. May have to revise that thought.

So what has happened to a lot of the major addons? I downloaded Auctioneer last night, labled stable for 3.12 but half of it's items were disabled or had conflicts. Then when I loaded into the game it told me it didnt exist and offered to delete it.

Well auctioneer is gone, it's now advanced auctioneer. Best upgrade is to leave the stuff in the WTF folder and delete everything from auctioneer in the add ons. Then good luck figuring out its interface and getting any sort of legit results out of it.

The WUA was the greatest thing ever for the lazy man.

But the ace2 framework, and now the battle between Ace3 and Rock is basically creating a lot of bloat and weird cross library errors it seems, and as ckknight has been alluding to on the pitbull thread on curse....the curse client is a PoS.

I think I am going to start working on building a UI in OpenRDX either this weekend or next. Try and wean myself off of stuff that is part of the whole Ace3/Rock pissing match (also means I get stuff from a non-curse site).

It will, you're right.  And then every few weeks for a month or two after that as things are tweaked, patched or otherwise altered to fix things that weren't intended or aren't working right. The same thing happened with BC and with the original launch AND Blizz can't seem to resist fucking with their UI code on every patch.  Yet another reason to not bother with a shitload of mods, especially now that WAU is gone.

That and it swapped around the effects of several totems so they weren't conflicting or useless.  So in terms of "helping shaman out" they really just made it "you always have to drop 4 totems to be effective."  AND, as Ironwood said, you still have to expend 4s dropping the fuckers every 10 yards while leveling.  Yes, their range is 40 yards BUT dropping them and moving around in their 40 yard range means some wandering fuck will ALAWYS aggro it and then add one or two buddies to kill you while in the middle of killing something else.

I concur (with a few points in elemental for the casting bonuses).  Other than a mana or health regen I rarely drop totems after 20 or so.

In terms of WOTLK and add ons, supposedly this patch was WOTLK and the official release will just be patching new zones. I'm sure it will break some things, but it won't be the huge issue this one was.
