[Tale]

The most perfectly constructed little movie I've seen in years. European actors you know from American movies, speaking in their own accents, in well-written roles. It's like a stage play, occurring in scenes, on a low budget because it doesn't need a bigger one. Darkly comic, but believably human. Creeping upwards on the IMDB top 250 instead of dropping out.

I liked this movie a lot.  The previews made it look like some sort of chucklefuck buddy comedy.  What you get is really anything but.  It has its funny moments, but there interspersed between a lot of tragic, dark, and just surreal parts.  I was just unexpected pleased with this movie and was glad my wife added it our Neflix queue.  This wasn't a movie, considering the path it took, I thought she'd enjoy, but she did it enjoy it thuroughly.

It also made me hate Colin Farrel less. Plus, it's got Fleur Delacour.

Yes. QFT and all that. This was the movie that convinced me that Colin Farrel could act, so long as he wasn't trying to fake an American accent. It's just absolutely perfect.

Saw this a few weeks ago it's a little gem Colin Farrel plays the Northside Dublin scally so well. I liked the ground down atmosphere no frills and simple story and no fast edits is refreshing for a modern thriller.

Finally watched this last night having picked it up for cheap.  Very much enjoyed it and laughed a lot. Also found myself thinking that it was like a stage play - turns out that Martin McDonagh (writer/director) has written a vast amount of award winning plays so that's not really surprising.

I don't think it'll win the Oscar for it's writing though.

I had to talk myself down from the clock tower with "It doesn't matter what was said... it wasn't the point...". Once I calmed down and thought about the rest of the movie, I realized I rather liked it and was ok with the way they ended it.

Really? I thought Gone Baby Gone was pretty damn good. Why didn't you like it? It was well acted and the ending was fucked up and made you question your values. Hell, most movies don't even accomplish the former, much less the latter.

Gone Baby Gone is an excellent movie pay no mind. I can't understand how you could tolerate Lost in Translation the slowest nothing happens movie of all time and yet be bored by In Bruges? The majority of films in your favourites are quite puerile did you notice that?

First off, I disagree with you about Grosse Point Blank but that's okay; We can have different opinions. Secondly, isn't it more daring to list movies that were mostly box office hits and defend that (especially when facing film "snobs") than it is to list Taxi Driver, Godfather and Scarface? Awesome movies all, but exceedingly obvious answers when you're defending your tastes. They're like trump cards. Besides, I think I threw out some fairly meaty fare when Ookii asked for me to list independent films I liked. Although, I do admit that they're all fairly well known (which doesn't detract from them in the least) and kind of easy to retort with.

And its entirely possible I wasn't in the mood for In Bruges. I also made the mistake of watching it with the wife whose tastes differ from mine. I might have to give it another go since most everyone here seems to have liked it.

What the fuck half of your choices are box office smash crap Spider Man   Iron Man   Dark Crystal was huge when it came out so was Labyrinth this isn't about box office success it's about having a bunch of mediocre films in your favourite list and basically not paying homage to 1000's of amazing films that are far superior. Just to add I'm not a movie snob I would probably put Terminator 2, Predator and Aliens in my top twenty.

Raging Bull, Carlito's Way? Cool Hand Luke, Platoon, Citizen Kane, Full Metal Jacket, Brazil, Ghostbusters, Withnail & I, Citizen Kane, Treasures of the Sierra Madre, Barry Lyndon, Carilto's Way, Planes Trains & Automobiles damn even if you had one or two of those on your list it would improve it tenfold.

I would agree to some extent Scorsese is yes but he has some definite gems mainly Raging Bull is a masterpiece. I think to completely omit any of those three from your list is heinous there's so much on offer, not to mention no Kafka, Kubrick or Stone you gotta have one of them in there.

I'd put Scorsese before I'd ever put Coppola. I've yet to find the reason either Coppola, any of the Godfather movies or Apocalypse Now are held in such high esteem. They are pretty but IMO mediocre.

Apocalypse Now is probably the most overrated piece of muck ever, I'll agree with that much. Full Metal Jacket and Platoon are far superior, damn even Jarhead is a better film. Godfather is just a brilliant piece of drama, I could forgive it's omission even if Mean Streets was mentioned or I don't know any De Niro piece ... Dog Day Afternoon. Let's change it to De Niro, Pacino and Brando.

I thought it was alright. Kind of reminded me of Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead. But without interesting characters (besides Fiennes). I think I just find the whole disaster heist/gangster genre to be kind of overwrought and never very fulfilling.

Ronin was possibly the most disappointing films I have ever seen. Most of your other films listed are decent enough in their own way, and taste in films is hardly objective. However, for about half of them I can think of a similar film I would consider better.

In Bruges was probably the most unexpected; it's a very solid film with some of the darkest humour of anything I have ever seen. As a film it runs a whole gamut of emotions while really running through a very simple story, shot in very simple settings.
