...is officially easy to come by now. Last night I bought my epic land mount for the first character ever in the 3.5 years I've been playing. I also decided to push ahead and make 70 before the expansion and went from early 62 to 65 in less than 2 weeks playing maybe 45m-1hr a night. And I made 500G just questing and selling junk. Sure was easier now than it was back in the L60 days!

Yeah, Blizzard finally opened the floodgates on gold, mostly because I think it's the best way to kill gold farmers. I have 6000+ gold just lying around, and I respec probably 3-4 times a week.

I just lost 600g on a riding bug. Huh? What's the bug so I know not to do it! :) Back on topic: With Herbalism/Mining I was able to buy expert riding for my wife and artisan riding for both myself and my wife with about 10 days worth of harvesting..

Rode my epic purple horse to Shadowmoon with cash in hand to buy the firsts flying riding.
Guy charged me 35g for normal riding then 540 for epic riding, bringing me up to a skill of 150 that I already had.
O_o
Clicked 'buy' before checking what the fuck I was buying.
Worst bit of it was I now don't have enough money to actually BUY the flight skill until the GM sorts it out.

Herb/ Mining is TRULY where it's at - if your server supports enough of a consumables market for the herbing. Just doing mining I was able to hit 5k in about 4 days after hitting 70 on my horde warlock. I've got a friend on my Raid-guild-heavy Alliance server that's spent 15k on epic riding for his alts and still has about 10k banked because he does Mining/ Herbing while Primal Farming on his engineer (those clouds are moneymakers!).

6000 gold is going to get you one pony ride in WOTLK most likely.

Yep, truth. They're adding all kinds of mounts and fluffy things into the game.

don't forget selling stacks of cloth. Good stuff there.
Hell, I made several gold selling stacks of fish I caught waiting to PvP from the pond in Org. There is no credit crisis in WoW.

6000 gold is going to get you one pony ride in WOTLK most likely. The "Northrend Flying" skill is (currently) a freebie from a two minute quest. Like Merusk said, it looks like most of the gold-sinks will be optional and fluffy.

Flying around northrend is expensive in other ways, quite a lot of the flightpaths in beta are costing over 2g per trip.

But once you have an epic flyer, who takes flight paths anymore? Sounds like it will hit you up front as a money sink (when you're moving around doing the heavy questing) then at level 77 be completely not a problem. Pretty backwards way to implement a money sink.

If quest cash rewards continue to scale like they did in BC, you could probably pay for 10 flights by completing just one quest in the zone you flew into. I'm assuming everything will scale evenly. Why they even charge for flights is puzzling though. It has never hurt me. I barely even think about it.

Back on the money front (and how plentiful it is) my wife opened the vendor window and clicked repair the other night (after a particularly grueling raid where we were trying to learn new content) and said "you know, I never even look to see how much repairs cost anymore, I just click the button." Of course we're both clothies, but I certainly remember looking at the repair costs and wincing after every BWL run way back when.

Only if you're trying to make a realistic economy. If, on the other hand, you're trying to cripple goldsellers then massive inflation is a Good Thing.

Well, it was just an example of some of the staple costs that have jumped dramatically with WoTLK. Another example is the staple Tailoring thread for 375+ recpies: Eternium Thread costs 3g a go, and tailors will need multiple per point of tailoring. So although there's no big sink like the epic flyer (so close now, mainly thanks to someone dropping 3.5K gold for a pendulum of doom I had rotting on an alt), the day-to-day costs will be a fair amount higher. I don't even look at things like flight costs, and when you're levelling you do make a lot of gold off quests, but at 80 you'll still be forced to run dailies just to keep your day-to-day going.

I just bought epic riding for an alt last week, and noticed that I could buy the new level 30 (75) riding skill when I already had the level 40 (75) riding skill. I, however, did not click on the wrong button.

I dunno, a kara run seems to net me about 100 gold and the smaller instances tend to get 30-80 right now, just from the cash that mobs drop. Right now I can easily live forever off of just instancing. I suspect that the runs in WotLK will be drastically better, much like the costs are drastically more.

The only gold expense I have that bothers me is flasks for raiding. Those can get kinda expensive, since they fluctuate wildly in price and you have to have the damned things. I don't even raid THAT much and I have to hit the SSO about 1-2 times a week to cover that expense. Otherwise, I make enough just fiddling around to cover repairs and the rare flight costs I incur from sheer laziness.
Then there's twinks, but that's a decision we all make at one time or another and strictly optional.

So WoW's counter-strategy for WAR is...magical flying ponies for everyone, and mudflation run wild. Might work, might make things worse in the long run.

Potions are being changed in WotLK - one potion per combat. No more chain-chugging haste or mana pots any more.

On my server (Rexxar) prices have still not caught up with the inflation from dailies. It almost always takes less time to make money from dailies and spend it at the auction house (on Aldor/Scryer rep items, crafting mats, etc.) than it would take to farm those things from mobs. I guess the reason for this is that there's a surplus of everything, and the server's needs are met without anyone having to grind. That kind of economy works for me.

In a system that tends towards mudflation, I think there's a point of diminishing returns where fighting it is just throwing dev resources down the toilet. Keep an eye on it, surely, but don't drag the whole game down because some guy got his epic flyer faster than expected.
