I've asked this before... but I still can't find software that will allow me to play my iPod library through my computer speakers. iTunes wants to clear and re-synch my iPod to the new computer and I can't seem to find any shareware that will allow me to do this either. I don't want to load my music files to my office computer, I just want to play the content of my iPod without having to wear headphones. Is it even possible?

What about connecting the iPod via the line-in on your work computer? Works for my 360 to my desktop. Sound is sound, I would think, when played through the speaker output of your iPod to your line-in on your computer.

I think Nebu knows what a minijack to minijack cable is. But he's a scientist, so Occam's Razor goes right out the window. He'll also shoot me for saying that.

To be honest, I didn't know that the line level woudl be high enough to do it directly using an 1/8" male-male jack. If it is, that's a pretty easy solution.

Probably just overthinking it like I did my "I want to use headphones and desktop speakers, so I need two audio cards" thing last year.
Then a guildmate pipes up: "Hey dumbass, just get a splitter".

I'm as guilty of over-engineering as anyone. Looks like this is another case.

You should definitely be able to pipe a ipod through any line-in on a computer.

Various ways to accomplish this… …I just plug mine in (turn off syncing in iTunes) and access it via iTunes…
Also, if you can run iPod/iPhone apps there are some apps (DataCase, Files) that will turn your iPod/iPhone into a WebDav server and you can access/copy content by mounting it as a disk volume on your machine… …and there is a new app now (name escapes me at the present moment) that will let you use your iPhone/iPod to access your music library (via iTunes, WinAmp, etc....) across the internets and stream…

Alternatively (if you don't need sound from your PC) just plug the speakers straight into the iPod headphone point. Works fine with mine if I want to work at home and don't want to risk the distraction of turning my PC on.

In my experience, it's usually the scientist/doctor types that are the most lost when it comes to setting up audio/visual/computer stuff.

This. God, I'm an idiot. I've been building stereo equipment, guitar enclosures, and lab electronics for years and I overlooked this. Thanks for the help (and restoring my humility).

Hey don't feel bad. I only thought of doing it a few months ago having spent any time previous to that succumbing to the temptation of opening up browsers or games when I wanted to work. I felt a combination of genius and idiot when I realised I could just do that.

Not sure if this is what you're talking about, but for the iPhone/Touch there's Remote. Launch it, type in the four-digit number it gives you to any iTunes app on the same wi-fi network, and voila, you can use your iPhone to control what's being played with full access to the library, and control the volume. Plug your laptop/media PC into your three-zone whole-house stereo and you're all high tech without an X35 Home Automation system I'm still working out the best way to drive videos to my HDTV. My would-be media PC sounds like a I'm sitting on the frontage road at my airport, so that's off for the living room. And the size of the hole I'd need to put through my floor into the basement where I could put the PC even gives me pause. But I don't really watch movies at home anyway. That's what flights are for.

No, Remote is nice but this is using your iPod/iPhone without iTunes as a wireless drive — drag/drop files to it, access it (via wireless) via PC/Mac, etc.… …also can be used to sync without using iTunes… …two of the more popular apps in this category are DataCase ($6.99) and Files... SimplifyMedia is a free app (that also requires a client app install) that lets you use your iPhone/iPod to stream music (and for up to 30 other friends too) from your home computer on your remote iPhone… Haven't tried either yet but witnessed them on a friend's phone working… …and I refuse to pay for apps so I will wait until a DataCase free version is available (or if the pay for one is sufficiently vetted)… Various ways to accomplish this… …I just plug mine in (turn off syncing in iTunes) and access it via iTunes…

Oh, nice, so DataCase and Files can turn your iPhone into a USB drive then? Is there a way to get the iPhone Springboard to recognize the files? For example, I'd love to load up a bunch of MS Word and Excel files, which I can read on my Touch. But so far I haven't seen an app that lets me go from getting them onto the device to something like a Desktop where I can open the files. I only really looked a few months ago through Jailbreak, but I'm assuming a need at least two programs and got lazy looking for the other one

Y, if you're willing to fork over ~$6, you can have your docs (though you might have to have them as PDFs, don't know if iPhone can read .doc or not...) on that drive. Does that one program not only let you store your docs (like PDF) but also provide an interface to get to and open those docs on the iPhone/Touch? I'd easily pay 6$ if one program did both.

Finally started poking around for this app. One thing I've noticed: all of these seem to require wi-fi. What I'd really like is one that can work through my USB port.

This is how I hook it up to my mixer when I'm using the mixer headphones to monitor stuff. (technically I use 1/8" male/male cable to a 1/4" adapter but whatever) Having the whole ipod library available is great for jamming. Though when I'm recording, I use the ipod with cheap earbuds and my monitor headphones over those. Yes, I wear two headphones at once. It works.

Is there anywhere I can rent audiobooks?
The digital versions still cost entirely too much.

Have you checked the library? I know you saw that reply coming! But seriously, we carry them now, but the provider we partnered with (were forced to partner with by outside forces of ) isn't compatible with ipods without breaking DMCA. I had a lot of fun pointing that out every time the outside forces of had a conference about the topic and kept providing the means to break the DRM. Told our staff to tell people how to circumvent DRM! Err...no. The outside forces of hate our library. We're sticklers for the whole law thing.
