Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

How fucking bored are these people? This is suddenly a sport? Even curling makes more sense than this.

Why do rednecks continue to amaze me?

Of course, this is about as interesting a sport to me as something a guy in my office plays. Frisbee Golf. Yeah, that's what I thought too.

Where ya been?

This started getting popular when I graduated college in 98. Of course I went to school in Dayton which is only about 45 minutes from Cinci.

I played more horseshoes myself but after nearly braining more than a few drunken idiots that walked into the pit area I can see the appeal.

And I'm pretty sure this is as much a "sport" as darts (lawn or otherwise), foosball, horseshoes, frisbee golf, etc...

Where do you live??  Disc (frisbee) golf is actually pretty big down here in Austin (insert your ignorant texas jokes here).  I'm not too fond of it, but there are a LOT of people around here who like to grab a case of beer and hit the disc golf course for fun.    I haven't been in about 6 years, but it's actually kinda fun if the weather's nice.

Around the office here, everyone is all excited about Washer Tossing.

Frisbee Golf or whatever it's called... There is a course about 1 block from my house. Always packed with people on nice days.

I live in Mississippi. When I first heard of it being an "organized sport," Frisbee Golf just sounded weird to me. I thought it was a joke.

Don't those people know that cornholing is a euphemism for buggering? I thought rednecks hated and feared all things gay.

As an expert on rednecks, I can safely say there are rednecks everywhere.

Damnit. I knew one of you bastards would find out about this eventually.  Cornhole has been getting really big around here in the last 2-3 years.  Prior to that it was just a local thing that a few folks messed around with on the west side of Cinci, though I hear its popularity comes and goes.

UD, yeah the reason you know about it, because you've been in the area.

They do, they just ignore it.  I don't get it either, given the ultra conservative nature of the greater Cincinnati area.

Amusing story:

I recently changed jobs to a new start-up division of my new employer here in Cincinnati. Most of the exectutive staff comes from around Florida, and they wanted to build a set to play at some local event they were throwing.  So one of them googled-up "cornhole plans" and, of course, got pages and pages of porn links.

He was so embarassed he sent an e-mail to the Regional President that said "Hey, if you get a notification from Dallas corporate, I was NOT browsing for porn, I was trying to find plans for this damn game."

Yes, tons. There's a reason the city of Hamilton is known to the rest of Cincinnati as "Hamiltucky."

It's more than an organized sport. I used to live in a 4-apt house with a guy who was a pro 'disc golfer' as he called it.   He made a decent living doing so, but I still found it odd.

Being from Cleveland prior to moving to Cinci for college, I can't disagree with that descriptiom of Brunswick.

Frisbee Golf is also otherwise known as Disc Golf. My cousin's husband is into it pretty big....he just came up to Michigan (from Alabama) to compete in a national tournament this summer. From what I understand, he did pretty well.

If you enjoy either golf or frisbees, give it a try sometime. It's pretty fun, and among the cheapest pseudo-sports out there.

Bring the noise.

And those same rednecks probably sit around a fire after a good tournament and laugh about geeks who sit chatting on message boards. They're out having fun, and chose a name that would make beavis and butthead chuckle.

Yeah, but it's a toss up (he said "toss", hehe) as to whether B&B would have called the game "cornhole" or "bunghole".

Considering I graduated in 98 and you started in 2000 it's doubtful we'd know anyone other than maybe staff & faculty.

I was in Delta Tau Delta, hence the UD_Delt, actually if you go into the Delt house my picture would be on the wall since I was a founding father. As part of that I was in the IFC (interfraternity council) and also in Order of Omega (greek honorary).

I was also in GEL, the service fraternity and for a semester or two I was involved in the student ACM.

As far as education I was a CIS/PSY dual-major.

I think this "sport" became popular after a certain 1972 film was released.

Of course, this is merely speculation.

I used to not like making fun of other Southern states for being rednecks since Georgia has more than its quota. Then I met a guy from Kentucky and saw what his driver's liscense looked like. Seriously, it looked like someone made it on their computer as a joke. It was just a think piece of laminated paper. No plastic, no magnetics, no barcodes, no holograms. I thought to myself, man if even your government is that backward that's an indictator.

They make good bourbon though.

Well, they *have* finally updated at least that. We get the spiffy barcode plastic imprint liscenses like everyone else now. In trade we get a fucking happy-smile sun on our plates that says "It's that friendly!"

Oh.. and voting.  We're using electronic booths instead of the old paper-chad system that Ohio was using when I moved.  Ready those 4-year-old hanging chad jokes, folks. Ohio is poised to be Florida, Part 2! Won't this election be fun!)
