Seems to me that if I wanted to be a champion chess-boxer (and I'll privately admit that it sounds intriguing), I would just train the boxing part and not worry about the chess side at all. I could be the world's crappiest chess player and still be champ. I figure I could just stall for four minutes of chess, and then give a total beat-down. It seems rather flawed that either a checkmate or a KO can lead to victory. Seems it should be a combination of both.
The guy does look pretty big though. Do they have weight classes?

In a timed chess match it's not possible to "stall" -- you make your move or you forfeit the game. Depending on how they have the clocks set, a sufficiently crappy chess player might actually not be able to avoid checkmate in a span of four minutes. Back when I played chess regularly, my game of choice was the five-minute speed match. Each player's clock is set to five minutes; use it up before checkmate and you lose (hence the longest the game can possibly last is ten minutes). If you take more than a few seconds to make each move you're probably boned. For what they're doing, it'd make sense to set each player's clock at something like 2:30, which would force the slower player to move at something very close to the pace of the faster player. Under those circumstances a good player could probably shepherd a poor player into some sort of fool's mate within one round.

According to Wiki, they play speed chess, with 12 minutes total time. Chess rounds last 4 minutes, boxing rounds last 2 minutes. If they don't make a single move in one round of chess, they get a warning. If it happens again, they lose.
So you only have 2 minutes to get the beat down in. Also, going along with your idea, another player could just concentrate on being good at chess, then dance around, block, and just generally stall during the boxing round. Then kick your ass in chess.
