but look at all the shit you made me write just to prove Ardent wrong. You bastard. Here's how to tell if I'm wrong: look for my name, then read the words I typed. It's pretty much a given they will be wrong. To wit: You can slice the genre pie any way you want, but your choices are subjective. One could make the argument that Alien is more sci fi than horror ... or Dead Alive is more comedy than horror ... or even Silence of the Lambs is more thriller than horror. I don't have to accept how Blockbuster categorizes these movies, just like I don't have to accept how you categorize them, either. These genre labels are really arbitrary distinctions that try to group together films with similar elements, but really, each one is a distinct piece of art unto itself. And good acting appears in all different categorizations. If proving me wrong is more important than accepting the truth that different people categorize art in different ways and it's entirely subjective, please, knock yourself out.

somehow Dracula was overlooked in that department when it came to Oscar time. It was ruled ineligible due to the involvement of Keanu Reeves. I saw bits of the Bravo show that Boog mentioned yesterday (in between watching the Seahawks try to give another game away to my ever-growing horror), and it was pretty creepy, as well as impressively comprehensive. As a rule I fucking hate horror films, at least the tradition zombie/slasher/ghost/bump in the night type. Pyschological thriller types like Silence of the Lambs are more tolerable. For the record, Alien was horror, Aliens was action (the only horror being that little fucking rat Newt didn't get torn to shreds...goddamn I hated that kid). Saw Friday Night Lights over the weekend (good flick, btw), and saw a trailer for EVP. THAT looks freaky.

Sorry if it's been said already, but when I was a kid these "pscyhological thriller" and "psychological horror" films were call "suspense" films. And we liked it, dammit!!
IMO, Silence of the Lambs was much more a suspense film than a horror film.
Bring the noise. Cheers............

somehow Dracula was overlooked in that department when it came to Oscar time. It was ruled ineligible due to the involvement of Keanu Reeves. Thank you for saying it before I could. The cockmunch who decided not only to cast Reeves, but to try to make him effect a British accent should be fucking shot. But since I think Coppola is an overrated hack, to each his own. I don't consider things without some form of supernatural element to be horror, ergo Silence of the Lambs is not horror, it's just meant to be scary. Though it wasn't really very scary to me, nor was any of the other shite they keep trying to pawn off on us just to give Anthony Hopkins another chance to act like he ate some guy's fucking organs. Whoop. See, I have really begun to loathe the "horror/suspsense" genres because they use the same techniques OVER AND OVER again, and we know them all. The jump scare bullshit is one of my biggest pet peeves, because it's not only so rarely effective, it's usually just thrown in there as one of those things you HAVE to do, whether the story needs it or not. Good example of what was supposed to be a creepy horror film that just wasn't was Gothika. I saw that this weekend, and am damn glad I payed no money for it. The whole surprise part of the story made no goddamn sense given the evidence we were shown up to that point in the film, the supernatural bits were in no way compelling or scary, and the parts of the film they deliberately tried to hit you over the head with through the early parts turned into obvious red herrings. Total shit.

The best horror in recent past would be ' Hush', but that was not a movie, just an episode. For a movie, the last good movie dealing along the horror line that I liked was Dog Soilders, though that could be argued to be as much action as horror.

Hush was creepy as hell. Definitely one of the best BtVS episodes ever, and probably THE best that didn't come from the first 3 seasons.

The X-Files episode "Darkness Falls" had me pulling the blanket over my head the first couple times I watched it.

The X-Files episode "Darkness Falls" had me pulling the blanket over my head the first couple times I watched it. Wish I could remember the names, but the one that got my cookie was the damn alien insect living in the tree cores that would come forth and desicate all life in a pretty large radius. That shit was just classic lovecraftian, just sweet in its horror.

Was that the one with the guy that was really a huge bug but no one could see it except for one guy who goes crazy and takes them all hostage? That did freak me out a little.

I knew you were going to say that, damn, should have googled. If you get a shot to rent this movie on the cheap, try it. ScarecrowsThe movie is not (Whumph!!) great, but it has some element that just strikes the primal cord.

No-win moral dilemmas are at the crux of Saw (well, that and a lot of yucky gore). By comparison, Lions Gate's decision to sequelize the horror film was a breeze.
The low-budget indie flick made a scary amount of money.
A day after Saw wrapped up its debut weekend with $18.3 million, Lions Gate and the film's producers announced plans for Saw 2. Cha-ching

The X-Files episode "Darkness Falls" had me pulling the blanket over my head the first couple times I watched it. While it didn't have me pulling blankets over my head, the atmosphere was definitely creeping me out. My favorite episodes are probably "Bad Blood" and "Jose Chung's It Came From Outer Space". Nothing quite like infusing humor with the surreal and supernatural.

My favourite was Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose - but scary it wasn't.
... and the one featuring the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow, because I'd just me the guys the week before.
