I've been following AOC with some interest however when the game launched people were reporting 800Mb-15Gb downloads and other horrific shit.  Unfortunately that'd be completely unworkable for me as I have a strict 30Gb monthy download limit and no other options.  However, a corp mate in Eve believes those monster downloads only apply for early start customers and I'd only be grabbing a few megabytes with a shop bought copy of the game.  Is he correct?

I think one of the patches came in at 8gigs? after I installed from disks. though that could be wrong

I feared as much.  Do you know if they release the patches as standalone executables a la WoW then?  I could possibly go to an internet cafe and grab whatever is needed initially if they don't make a habit of enormous patches.  Thanks for your help.

I haven't seen any mirrors yet, but have only looked briefly.

Off by an order of magnitude -- it's about 800 MB in patches for the US release from the retail DVDs. There's a series of smaller patches and then one big one about 650 MB.

Don't think there is executables as such. you might be able to snag the rdbdata files from a patched copy and replace the ones from the disc install and see if that works.

Yeh, 8gigs did seem a little off in my head, all I remembered was 8xxx when I was installing. Must have been KB.

Umm no. From the CE DVDs, I had a about a gig and a half to patch in two parts.

I have never played WoW.

 ACK!

I went and bought a normal box at gamestop, had two patches, one around 95mb and the other around 600mb. No where near 8gb for me.

the patching for me wasn't bad, much much faster than the wow downloader considering the size. What takes forever though is the basic CD install. You're looking at a good 2 hour wait time from putting the disk in until playing. That said, I'm having fun with the game itself.

it took me about 20 - 30 minutes as of last night

Given the number of failures we've seen in MMORPGs, designers need to learn it's hard enough just to make a fun game without getting distracted by unnecessary drivel.

It's probably more an hour, for me at least.  Which, granted, is feeling much longer.  I only recently decided to try the game, based on the boards here, and it took me awhile to even snag a copy.  Now I wait more.

Edit:  Install and patch was about an hour and a half.  Worth the wait, though.

I'm not seeing it.  It's so fking slow I've restarted it twice.  And had to reboot my computer since when I hit "cancel" it thinks it's still running.

Getting less than 300 kb/s.

I have re installed twice in the last two days trying to solve a tech issue. Both times were like 30 minutes tops.

Installed and patched in the UK yesterday and had about 700mb of patch in total. Maxed my connection out the whole time at 200k/sec, went out to do the week's food shopping and it was done when I got back.

I got 1.5MB stable. So did everyone else in this house. Including the guy on a P4 2.8Ghz box.

The patches downloaded 800Mb likity split - maybe 10-15 mins - and I live in Australia  awesome, for real

However, the unpacking and installing took about 1.5 hours.
