Good Father & Son gaming options

I am looking for ideas on games I could play with my 9 year old son.

I am open for ideas on any system.

I have had a hard time finding games that are fun to play for two people at the same time and age appropriate on the 360.

We both enjoy Mario Kart for the Wii and various other racing type games, but I am looking for other ideas. We have played a good amount of assault heros as well.

The Lego Star Wars complete saga would be a fun game for both of you.  My roomie and I are both 20 something and enjoy it even though it's pretty simple. Can't think of much outside of that.

This was going to be my suggestion as well. Game is a lot of fun, no matter what age you are imo

Yes!  My daughter and I play this often.  This and guitar hero.

Raving Rabids is a good one for the kids, my friends 7 and 4 year old love it. Rabids 1 or 2 works.

I'm going to tell you flat out to not get him hooked on Raving Rabbids. Raise the kid to be a respectable fucking gamer. None of that minigame bullshit.

At 9 years old I was playing Final Fantasy. Get that kid some RPGs. Any of the Tales series comes to mind and I'm pretty sure they're all multiplayer. Tales of Symphonia is excellent and it's on the Gamecube - and by extension, the Wii. Also, there's no harm in getting a game he might have trouble with if you'll be there to help him. Train him on games like you would any other thing.

Also, Crystal Chronicles. he can be your pot bitch. You'll understand that when you play it.

Curse you, Panda, you beat me to it.  However, I get to mention Lego Batman will be out soon, too.  Obviously, I toss-in my vote for Lego Star Wars as well.

My kids both love Rabbids.  It's a good distraction for a bit and we can play with all 3 of us instead of just 2 while the 3rd watches. 

Super Smash Bros Brawl was good fun, too.. and I forget why we stopped playing it.  Probably because I kicked their asses too often.  That, and you really need GC controllers, imo.

The problem with RPGs is too many of them are single player.  Super Mario World is fun, but being the 2nd guy sucks, as all you're doing is playing "star piece bitch" for the guy actually playing. 

As for the 360, I think you're going to be limited to Sports games.  You know, those "respectable gamers" and the devs who cater to them don't want those silly kid-friendly games on their fine pieces of electronic equipment.

The Lego games, as previously mentioned, are on the 360.  Does Katamari have 2 player co-op?

From one of the few times I played on a 360 I liked the game with the faerie that turned into different creatures.  Kameo or something.  I know it had multiplayer.  I don't know how good it is for a 9 year old or as a father/son game though.

To be honest, if I was going to get a (mature enough) kid started on shooters (whether first- or third-person), I'd say pick up Earth Defense Force 2017.  Yes, it's a totally bug-filled (heh) disaster from a production values and technical standpoint, but it's absurdly fun and the violence is entirely inflicted on giant bugs and robots.  Blowing up buildings by accident is an added bonus.  Local co-op too, and it's also dirt cheap if you can find a copy.

Sports games, with football and hockey being past favorites.

My son has grown up with allways a PC or Console games in the house, so he is a natural at most games and can totally own me in most games now.  The Call of Duty series actually got him interested in some military history, and it doesn't hurt that he can usually dominate an on-line game in the fps he plays.

Actually, I'll second this one. It's so over the top and corny that it's fun. It's mindless shooting and running around. Not really violent seeing as you're shooting giant ants and they splat green.

I'll second Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Play that with my 7 year old. Also play Freelancer just hosting a server on one of our computers. By far his favorite though is Lego Star Wars, which is the only one he likes to play by himself. I don't let him even watch me play Gears of War (would be too scary and gory for him) but he does play Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2. He's actually pretty decent at it.

I've got two boys myself, ages 8 and 12, and some of the games already mentioned here are good choices, i.e. Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Guitar Hero, Lego Star Wars, plus a few others we have played together:

Rock Band
Halo 3
Culdcept (local multiplayer)
Thrillville (lots of mini games in this, plus the main park building)
some racing game i cant think of
some of the arcade games

Some that i help them learn to play or we take turns on like Mass Effect and Oblivion.
My kids can generally kick my but in any FPS we play, but they like the RPG type games more.

Plus, my kids have learned MMORPG's from the old man, so they both have played WoW, City of Heros/Villians, and DDO.  We haven't ever paid for two accounts to play simultaneously yet, but it will only be a matter of time im sure.
