This might be the best racing game ever made (Yes, better than Ridge Racer 2, Wipeout, GT3 A-Spec, and F-Zero). Fuck, and Mario Kart.
This shit is getting real.

Personally, I'm waiting for the actual game. I've played it a bit, but the limited car and track selection isn't worth the $$ imo. I'm not spending $40 for what amounts to an enhanced demo.
Forza 2's visuals aren't up to the same level, but the control and physics fidelity are at least where GT5P is at. I'm also not keen on playing bumper cars with people online.

Gran Turismo is my favourite console game ever. Ever. Ever.
Sadly Sony (in common with practically everyone else) thinks Europeans are stupid and will pay extra for a console that is more sucky than the ones they sell outside Europe. So I don't have a PS3, have no immediate plans to get one and therefore will be relegated to playing GT4 on my PS2...

60 Cars, 6 tracks reverse and forward, 4 ranks and robust online support? Not sure what else you want. IMO, this is perfectly worth $40. Not a dollar more or less. Also, GT4 was crap to me. A-Spec 4tw. And this one definitely feels more like A-Spec to me.

I skipped 4, and just kept playing 3, too. I'm not saying I didn't consider GT5P, but I know I'm going to drop $60 on GT5 when it's released. When they get around to releasing the actual game I'm there, but I'm not going to spend $100+ for what they're ultimately going to sell for $60 (since all of what's in GT5P will be in the full game, with extra cars/tracks). If they'd let me upgrade GT5P to the full retail version when it releases for $20-40 and a download, I'd bite, but as it stands, I can wait - Forza 2 has my 'serious racer' addiction covered for now.

If I liked Forza 2, I might agree with you.
But I thought it was total poop.

http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=10153.msg316109#msg316109Couldn't dedicate the time.
I wanted to play with a wheel.
Traded it in. Too many other games going out.
Shame really, it's largely a masterpiece.
At the time you were pretty keen, but we can agree to disagree. :) I'm kinda hoping GT5 will allow for painting/customization, since that took up a lot of my FM2 time.

Oh, it's a masterpiece of a game. Just like the latest Fight Night.
But to me it was poop. So was Fight Night.
Also, 360 d-pad = lulz.

D-pad in a racing game when you have analog controls available? Zomg.

D-pad in a racing game? I've been using nothing but D-Pad since the first game I ever played (racing that is). When they started with analogue on the PS1, I still didn't use it. Nor in Sega Rally on the dreamcast.

That is pretty much completely the opposite of how I've generally been hearing the online support described.

That is pretty much completely the opposite of how I've generally been hearing the online support described. What more is needed than high-score lists, time trials, and 16 player racing? As well as GT-TV, which is an entirely unnecessary addition. Oh and sharing replays.

Does it have support for voice chat and friends lists?

I'm sure it doesn't. Don't see why it's necessary. Also, I agree that it's the most underwhelming part of the game.
That said, everything else is so stellar it's like being the dumbest kid in the smartest class. You're still in the smartest class.

Hmm, I thought all PS3 games were voice/chat enabled (don't play online much...just shooters, I guess. But that shit is part of the PS3's system features, I know that at least).
I'm just happy to have some racing sim to fuck around with.

Well you called it robust. Voice chat and friends lists really should be standard in all online games at this point. That being said, is there any way at all to be able to just play online with friends as opposed to random people?

Better than the original Wipeout?! That's blasphemy. Also means that if I didn't have to finish hanging wainscotting tonight, I'd be playing it tonight.

I have a confession, I have never once gotten voice chat to work in a single console game other than Lost Planet. I've simply never dicked around with it. I'm sure, for most, it's a killer feature. For me, it's just ANOTHER BULLET POINT on the box.
On PC, I make sure it works in everything if it's available though >_>.
Schild no likey bluetooth. Though I'm picking up that Metal Gear bluetooth headset if it turns out to be real.

I try not to dick around with it as much as possible. For racing, I'm not sure what's the big deal anyways. There aren't any teams to coordinate with. If I feel like talking shit, which I won't, 3 or 4 letters will suffice.

For racing, I'm not sure what's the big deal anyways. Generally when I'm playing online with people these days, it tends to be with people I know. If I can't chat with those people while I'm playing, then for all intents and purposes I feel like I'm just playing a single player game with better AI. Of course if one can't even get a private game together with friends, I guess it's a moot point anyway. I don't know, I mean I'm sure the game is probably worth $40. Gran Turismo has alway been pretty high quality stuff. I guess it's just that my first reaction upon coming into this topic and seeing schild just whipping his dick out for this game and using phrases like "robust online support", was to say "hey, let's not just give this game a free pass despite leaving out shit that should really be a no-brainer at this point". Sony did some of the same shit with the latest Hot Shots game, and I really think people need to give them more shit over it. If that requires them to stop dicking around with Home for a bit, or messing around with their online store for a bit than so be it. Getting the online shit for their first party games up to standard needs to be a priority.

Whoa there. Hot Shots Golf has shitloads of downtime and in some modes shitloads of waiting.
Gran Turismo is comprised of 3-4 minute races. More often than not in succession with minimum to zero downtime.
Having voice chat in a game where people would naturally want to talk and have shitloads of time to talk trash and crack jokes vs a game where utmost concentration is needed at all times if you want to be even remotely competitive is just completely unfair.
We're talking comparing apples to moon rocks unfair.
Clap Hans dropped the ball on Hot Shots. Polyphony Digital did not drop the ball on GT5 Prologue.

B Class, get a Nissan Skyline, do the Daytona Speedway track, takes less than 3 minutes. $12,500 a pop.

And for those who aren't worried about being competitive and just want to race against their friends? Sorry, but this is crap.

Finally, my thread. I was tempted to start it since this game came out in Europe but thought it was unfair to you NA people.
YEs, it's a dream game if you are into cars. CARS, not races. Which doesn't mean it's not a great, awesome racing game (because it is!), just that it's much more about cars than actual racing. Part of the enjoyment is beating lap records to me more than racing the AI or, so far, online peeps (not enough gratification, too much anonymous stuff, probably voice chat will help this).
A wheel, even the cheap Driving Force EX (as long as it is Logitech and has FF), boost the fun factor 300%. A Full HD tv set adds another 50%. This thing is running at 60fps in 1920x1080. Crazy sweet.
Now Schild, I hope they add custom online races soon as I can't wait for you to beat the crap out of my Audi R8.
