DreamWorks has acquired rights to the Japanese manga "Ghost in the Shell" with plans to adapt the futuristic police thriller as a 3-D live-action feature. http://www.variety.com/VR1117984029.htmlIt was fucking Spielberg who made it happen too. Fucking awesome.

Not really. They'll focus on the action part of it rather than the "what IS a human" part of it too much (as evidenced by calling it a "Thriller"). If the metastory gets lost, it's just Ultraviolet with a lot less cool toys.

If they do the tachikoma right and feature them prominantely I won't care about the rest of the movie.

Spielberg ignore the "what is a human" part? Are we thinking of the same Spielberg? Did you see AI? The only problem is he'll probably add random ass benevolent aliens just to "spice things up".

He'll just end up making the Tachikomas even more insufferably annoying than in the anime.

They're annoying.
I can see the ^_^ in my mind every time I hear them talk, and Ghost In the Shell is really the wrong mood for ^_^

Add me to the "Tachikomas are retarded" camp. Watching spider robot tank things sitting around debating in dodgy translated Japanese about the meaning of existence, in schoolgirl voices makes me wish everyone would just die.

1) A live action GITS anything other than some sort of cosplay sex that I'm part of will suck fucking shit. Period. GITS and Appleseed are two series that would suffer far more than benefit from being live action instead of modern CG.
2) Spielberg is a fucking hack who sucks shit. He will of mandate that some over the top, stereotypical pseudo-Nazis are the bad guys, as opposed to the Japanese government as presented in GITS. Not that it's presented as terribly fascist, but compared to the people they've faced off against...

Tachikoma are more interesting in the original manga, where they are mostly a source of random humor. I'm guessing a live-action movie would all but remove any aspects to suggest they are more than tools for combat, and instead focus on the main threads of the plot.
I agree with the angry one about GitS, and really any Shirow stuff apart from Orion, suffering more from a live-action americanized version than it would benefit. I don't understand, however, his intense hatred of Spielberg. You get touched in a bad place by Amistad, bob?

Its one of the more frequent criticisms of Spielberg I've seen. And part of why I think GiTS would suffer with him at the helm. His recent stuff is either wayyy too fucking cutsey (he ruined the original idea for Freakazoid, which wasn't supposed to be comedy.) or you can see the "bad guys are symbolic Nazis" analog from a mile away.
No, I didn't see AI. I thought it was over-hyped from the beginning, and the reviews were lackluster. It didn't interest me.

Spielberg might have made it happen, but betcha he won't be directing. He was involved in the Transformers deal, but that ended up with Michael Bay directing.

I agree, but then I'm retarded-gay for Orion. I have the Susano action figure still in it's packaging.

I have the figure on my desk, along with sleepy Seska and one of the guards. And cosplayed Susano years ago. I was a little obsessed at one point..

How could Freakazoid possibly be anything but a comedy, and how would that be better than what we got? The show is still hilarious today, especially the Candle Jack joke. Anyth

Well, I can honestly say I wouldn't have watched it if it was all serious. I pretty much only watch animated stuff that's comedy, I'm having a hard time thinking of a dramatic cartoon I've enjoyed.

How Senior Spielbergo is rated some top-notch director befuddles me. In his early days, he did a few a good movies, but since then, he's been a cheese-meister, laying it on heavy to any film he's done. AI was epic suck.

He's top notch because he's better than Lucas.
And because everyone puts Lucas near the top, Spielberg gets grandfathered in.
Lucas' success is befuddling.

The Lucas hate around here went off the scale and turned into self-parody all the way back in the years-old Episode 3 thread, where I had to listen to you and Haemish bitch about how Darth Vader should have recognized C3PO.

It was only one or two throwaway lines in a thirty-page megathread, but yes. Its very irregularity seared it into my brain.

Steven Spielberg is my favorite filmmaker after Kubrick.
I am in awe of Lantyssa's Orion love. I thought I was God-King of Orion fandom, I see now that I am eclipsed. Not sure I'd go as far as cosplay, though.
