So Signe asked me to make something nice.

Here it is, in it's current state anyways:

http://www.captaincannonball.com/

There isn't anything playable up there yet, just some random concepts and a somewhat updated design document. The game itself is a fast paced action game with puzzle elements. We have probably committed the sins of all games designers fathers, by iterating slowly and on a pretty idea based level. But we are getting playable builds now, so the design has already evolved a whole lot, to the better I must say.

I must say that developing a game, and trying to fit it into some market has been an interesting experience, one that I'd like to do more of.  Ohhhhh, I see.

I'll update here once the prototype gets released which should be sometime around the 9th of May.

Any Suggestions? Comments? Critique? Praise?

I have a couple of questions. First of, it says "physics based shooter", does that ammount to more than the mentioned fact that the cannon ball bounces of walls? If I'm going to take on the roll of the text book producer I'm also bound to ask: What's the unique selling point? My mental picture after skimming the wiki is a very lite, ordinary top down shooter with bouncing cannon balls.

I don't know why I kept not seeing this.  I can't connect to anything there but I've been having mysterious computer problems.  The wee man is very cute, though!

My Sig Image: hath rid itself of this mortal coil.

Omigod fix your onmouseover effect so it doesn't shift all the text down when you mouseover a title.

First of; thanks for the replies.

Physics based just implies that we are using physics (and the player has to use physics to calculate his shots). The main hook is to use the cannonball and bouncer shrooms to catapult it around corners (somewhat similar to the Demoman in TF2).

We set out to make something simple, and yes the prototype revolves around a pretty simple mechanic (shooting stuff/bouncing cannonballs). Originally our hook was to have some crazy asymmetric coop, which got shelved (for the time being at least). Also, we feel that the Wii is lacking decent games shooters.

But I agree, It doesn't have any revolutionary feature that makes it stand out. Rather, we want to make something we consider doable in a genre we have experience and knowledge. And bet our eggs on that the shooting mechanic feels like something new.

What browser you using Trippy? I'll have a look at the CSS.

Pedobear (not to be confused with Medved) is one of the more famous and long running 4chan memes, where he was originally called Kuma, literally "Bear". All Japanese and by extension things they create are assumed to be giant pedophiles so the prefix "Pedo-" would be considered redundant in Japan. While Kuma was generally lecherous, Pedobear is the mascot for 4chan's legion of slavering pedophiles, specifically targeting prepubescent girls (or "loli"). Like King Leonidas and Happy Negro, Pedobear is the subject of many bad photoshoppings, usually being pasted into whatever piece of child pornography the b-tards have got their filthy hands on. For unknown reasons Pedobear’s origins have also been linked to the internet spawned deity Cthulhu. There's also a team of similar animals - Scat Rat, Pedo Yeti, Shotacat, Watersports Pig etc - but nobody gives a shit about them. Supposedly, Pedobear has been put into jail, but recent reports have proven otherwise.

Pedobear is missing a foot because he chewed his way out of a law enforcement bear trap in order to desperately hobble after underage pu55y. You can clearly see the claws on his back foot, its called "perspective" you fucking retard.

Opera. Firefox and IE 6 seem to be ignoring the CSS error(s) that's causing the problem in Opera:

It's smart to keep it pretty unambitious ( I mean this in a good way ), if this is one of the first projects you're doing, especially if you don't have experienced programmers ( I'm guessing this since you only have 1 guy who seems to specialize in scripting ). I'd say the amount of work/experienced required for a project is exponential to its size. Even if taking on a project larger than one can chew comes with own benefits, to crash and burn is also a very good learning experience :).

Hai.

For anyone interested...

it's update time:

Captain Cannonball eventually made it to Dare to be Digital A video-game competition that runs over ten weeks, where teams of five students have to develop their game from scratch. A very nice incentive, the people hosting it supply office space and equipment to work on as well as some money to live on.

Sadly we didn't win, I can sort of see why now. Our setting and character-driven presentation is very outdated, and more fitting for the mid-nineties. And we did a pretty lackluster job of communicating our puzzles, which is even more apparent in the later levels. Also our camera didn't really help us... But all in all I'm somewhat proud that we managed to push this out in such a short amount of time.

So if anyone wants to check out the game, you can download it here. Or check out the website: www.captaincannonball.com for more info (which has been redesigned and shouldn't have as many css errors this time around). Comments and criticism is more then welcome!

To not steal credit;
Music and sound was not made by the team, but it was implemented by us.

(keep in mind that this was all developed by students in nine-and-a-half-weeks, so it's very rough around the edges)
