Well my troublefree Vista experience finally came to an end.  Not that it's that big of a deal, but...

What I want to do:
Have desktop speakers plugged in, and ready for use when I want them, whilst also having my Plantronics 770 headphones/mic plugged in at the same time.  Basically, if I want to listen to something through my desktop speakers, all I want to do to be able to do this is turn them on.  Or alternatively, if I only want to listen through my headset, all I need to do is turn them up / turn down/off desktop speakers.

What happens when I do this:
Music and such only plays through whatever speakers I started playing it in.  Meaning, I can't turn off my desktop speakers and put on my headphones and start listening that way, or vice versa.  I have to turn the app off (games, WMP, etc), turn on/off whatever I need to, then restart it.

Anyway around this?

I am using the onboard sound card on an Asus P5B mobo.  Would I be better served picking up a sound card?  If so, recommendation?

Edit:  Would picking up a cheapish sound card and then running the desktop speakers through it, while running my headset through the on board sound work?

Bought a $3 splitter.

Problem solved.

Bought a Belkin Speaker and Headphone Splitter for 3 dollars.

Easy.  Cheap.  Efficient.
