This is really fantastic. Such a good idea.

Garfield Minus Garfield

Quote
Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolor disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life?
Friends, meet Jon Arbuckle. Let’s laugh and learn with him on a journey deep into the tortured mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against lonliness and methamphetamine addiction in a quiet American suburb.

Oh, God, finally Jim Davis makes me laugh.  Unintentionally, of course.  I give this site thirteen thumbs-up.

That almost makes up for the Garfield movie, which I was compelled to see for some reason.

About a year ago the meme was "garfield minus garfield's ability to talk" which I thought were a little funnier.

This is all testament to the inherent comedy in Davis' art! (and insipidity of his words)

These remind me of the Far Side cartoons where the captions were unintentionally swapped with the Dennis The Menace captions for a much funnier effect.

I'd scan and upload them but Gary Larson would crucify me.

Yes!  My copy of Prehistory is worn to shreds from overuse.

The caption is something like, "Oh, Mom - Hamsters again?" while Dennis is eating his sandwich.

Yep. Mine is fairly wrecked. Probably the single best compendium of comics ever put into book form.

Fuck, Far Side still makes everyone else look like amateurs. Shame.

The comics pages are useless without them.

Larson seriously needs to unretire and do something.

Bill Watterson needs to unretire, stat.  I stopped regularly reading the funnies when he signed off.

Someone tracked him down and did an interview a few years ago.  He's painting now and enjoying himself much more than he ever did drawing cartoons.  If you've ever read the comments in his Treasury or other collections, you being to realize how much he hated doing a daily strip and just how fucked-up the whole process is.

And since he was never in it just for the money no amount you could thow at him would make him come back.  (In fact, he despises licensing and sees it as cheapening the work. Every time you buy a Calvin and/ or Hobbes sticker, shirt, whatever it's a pirated image. Watterson sees nothing from that.)

The past cannot be changed. The future is yet within your power.

You think YOUR paper's comics page is bad? We have a local guy on staff. He has a daily and is supposed to do politicals. He ranges from boring to "WTF IS THIS GUY ON STAFF FOR". Basically it's his blog about dating. The few months after his girlfriend left him (probably for being featured in a fucking comic strip every day, or for the two-month Rachel Ray obsession) as he worked quite publicly through his depression were the worst. But at least he stopped doing politicals during that period so those were funny again.

The only daily comic I read any more is Get Fuzzy.

Non webcomics I think are a good laugh:

Far Side, Get Fuzzy, sometimes Non Sequitur. If I want to overdose myself with sarcasm, Sally Forth really isn't too bad.

Moderately funny sometimes:

Mother Goose and Grimm, Shoe, LuAnn, Boondocks.

I might be missing a few; I drive home on my breaks at work to check forums as opposed to reading the newspaper. Something about actual news (OMG DAVID SKLANSKY LULZ!) instead of random_blonde_teenager_01 was found raped and murdered. Sorry.
