You can chat to people playing EQ2 while you goof off at work.  http://pc.ign.com/articles/556/556972p1.html?fromint=1

I'm kinda suprised how long it's taking for mmorpg companies to start charging for out-of-game frills, although SOE leading the charge is no shocker.

Aside from the chat tool, none of the other purchasable options sound appealing at all.  But I guess it's nice that EQ2 players are getting some nifty website stuff, which should become defacto practice for any new mmorpg games coming out.

How long until that is hacked and worked into Trillian?

They wrote that sort of chat functionality for EQ quite a while ago, with the intention of charging for it, but they found the takeup wasn't sufficient to make it viable. They also offered the guild web pages to legends subscribers, but I don't know if they ever got them working.

Bah, I could have sworn I looked at the "official" eq2 thread to see if this had been mentioned before I made this post.  Now I see you already brought it up last night.

Ah well.

A number of these features are already offered in other MMOGs for free.

Sure, SOE is adding more functionality to those existing features such as the guild pages and "official Magelo", but it seems to me to be a case of the suits saying "We need to charge for more money. What can we add?" rather than vice versa.

In a round about way UO Automap does this nicely now for UO.  It is a 3rd party program, but it is accepted and works well with the UO client.  You don't have to have UO installed to get UOAM though and it allows you to log into your friends' server and chat with them, in-game or out.

It is also free.  I would like to see it integrated into new MMORPGs though.

I remember doing something like this with AC1 plugins that let you talk on IRC while in game.

Very cool functionality, though I'd hesitate to call charging for it "very cool".

Witty banter not included.

Me too but the fact that it is seen as revenue or at least expense neutral means the company is more likely to commit longterm.
