LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Sharp-tongued comedian Chris Rock has been chosen to host the 77th annual Academy Awards, the film industry's highest honors, next February, the producer of the show said on Thursday as he reached out to a younger generation of comedians. I guess this means his movie career is officially over, just like Goldberg, Steve Martin, and Billy Crystal. Thank God. Stick to telling jokes, Chris, and never again infect the world with shitbombs like "Head of State" and "Bad Company".

I don't know. I think he came across pretty convincing as the psycho hitman guy in Nurse Betty.

He was very good in Dogma as well. Oh, and Lethal Weapon 4. Actually he may have been the only good thing in LW4. And how can you forget Boomerang... (quite easily I suppose). But hell yes to his cameo in Beverly Hills Cop II.

The man goes from hosting the MTV movie awards to the Academy awards in less than five years. Hmmm, methinks they realized that the target demographic has shifted away from the old school.

Speaking of Dogma, let's hope this year's Academy Awards show features a Selma Hayek wardrobe malfunction.

Just rent Desperado for that. Or Frida, if you can look past the unibrow.

I was just listing the movies I KNEW she got nekkid in.
Yes, Frida was very much unibrow city, but then again, the real Frida Kahlo was even more frightening looking. Frida is actually a good movie, even if you don't know much about the artist it's based on. The fact that Hayek would do a movie such as that shows she's more than just a pretty face. I think she's the sexiest actress in Hollywood, bar none.
I saw Chris Rock's "Bigger and Blacker" last weekend on Comedy Central. Now that man is funny. "All women want is food, water and compliments. LOTS of compliments. All men want is food, sex and silence."

Sadly, I think he peaked with that and the MTV movie awards he did that year. His comedy has gotten less and less funny since then. His newest HBO special was actually pretty fucking boring. Now, this is a welcome change over Billy Crystal, but I'm not exactly thrilled. I'd rather have Conan.

Ashley Judd reves my engine as much as Selma, but right now Bound still takes the cake for the best lesbian sex in a main stream movie in my book. Something about Gina Gershon makes me smile.

I take this as another excuse not to watch the Academy Awards. I used to like Chris Rock but his last special boiled down to "White people are bad and everything is their fault".
I get tired of that shit so will be passing on the Oscars. Then again, I can't remember the last time I actually watched them so no big loss to their audience I suppose.

The only thing funny about him is the majority of his fanbase is "white people". I'm not sure what their rationale is for choosing him. Is it because he's a black comedian, or because he's a young comedian? Was he really that good on MTV? IMO, they ought to give it to someone with more class, but if what they're looking for is someone who can appeal to a younger audience, I'll second Conan.

Conan would be great, but I don't think the late-night personality thing is going to fly after Letterman.
I never understood the Letterman-bashing after the Oscars. I watched that show, and I thought he was hilarious. He did a bit where he had famous actors repeat his line from Cabin Boy. There is brilliance in watching Paul Newman say in that gravel voice, "You wanna buy a monkey?"
Chris Rock? Meh. He'll severely tone down his act, like Steve Martin did, so there is no point in getting someone known to be "edgy" if he's going to whitewashed (so to speak).

I liked him during the MTV awards, but I doubt they'll give him as much free reign for the Oscars. And his most recent special was funny, but not even close to Bigger and Blacker.

No way is Goldberg's movie career over....Universal Soldier 2 and ready to Rumble are just the beginning. Although the day he starts doing romantic comedies, it's all over. Bring the noise. Cheers............

They won't put Conan on because the only celebrity he won't tower over is Tim Robbins, and they don't want Tim Robbins on because he's political.
Funniest joke I ever heard from Chris Rock was about 5 years ago. Some bud of mine had him on .mp3 and they lived across the hall, so we went an chilled over there. Anyways, Rock was talking about O.J. Simpson and he spouted this one line:
"I'm not saying he should've killed her...but I understand."
So God-damned funny.
