wants a greif tittle

on: October 13, 2004, 05:35:48 PM

Hey guys, I got given a photoshop challenge at work, and I cant seem to get it to work, maybe some of you know how to do what I need.

1) I have a RAW camera .tif file.
2) This .tif has IPTC deta (Metadata) attached to it.

What I need to a way to convert this .tif to a .jpg with out photoshop stripping the iptc deta out of the file. Every thing I try ends up with all the iptc fields black after converting to jpg.

My boss basically challenged me with this, and I want to be like "HA see".

Thanks in advance.

Can you copy the metadata, do the conversion, then re-add the metadata by hand?

Probably not the most efficient way to do it but it may work for you if it's a one shot deal.

You can edit the metadata using a freeware program like Exifer:

We have a specialy designed program to edit the metadeta, thats what we do here, its just these raw files are giving me a real hard time. I *could* copy all the metadeta, and then re-add it, but we are talking about 50,000 files. That why I was looking for a way to have it stay in the file after converting it.

Not sure what version of Photoshop you're using; do you have ImageReady?  That should allow you to do batch conversion of images while retaining XMP info, just need to make sure you have the box checked under Optimization settings.

Yeah imageready should do the job fairly well.

BWL is funny tho.  It's like watching a Special Needs school take a field trip to a minefield.

Well, we just partnered with a new sports photography agency, and they are giving us their archive, but they are raw files.

Also, I couldnt make ImageReady do it.

When you say "couldn't," what exactly do you mean? Like, you couldn't find the option to preserve the data (they do kinda hide it), or you did but it still couldn't do the job (the black fields you were mentioning), or it made everything 'splode and go boom, or what have ya?

I couldnt find the option. I am using CS. Also another thing of note, even before changing it from a raw file to another kind of file, photoshop cannot see the metadeta, but my program can, so I know it is there.

You a PC or Mac person?  I don't have the office mac fired up atm, but on my PC looking at the "Optimize" window, right next to the word "Optimize" on the tab there's a little set of up/down arrows.  Click on that to expand/shrink the visible options; it'll cycle through two or three settings.  When it's fully open, at the bottom there'll be a couple rows of options that aren't there by default--ICC Profile, Matte, and Preserve EXF Metadata.

Mac's probably in the same place, but I won't swear to it (those wacky Apple people like to screw with stuff just to be mean or something)

I don't recall if Photoshop actually reads/displays metadata; I think maybe it just allows you to import & tag it onto files.  Not positive on that though, not something I have to deal with on a regular basis.

Yeah, "Save Optimized" or "Save Optimized As" is the correct option.

I just went back and monkeyed around with the software a little to refresh my memory, and it's making my gray matter bleed.  For one thing, I can't get the option to preserve EXIF data on any of the .tif files I have laying around, no clue why it's being bitchy.

If I pull up a jpeg, I get the option to preserve, but it doesn't save all the information I know is attached.  Again, no clue why.

I was wrong about Photoshop not reading info (under "File" pull up "File Info", forgot about that).  Pulled up a .tif, looked at the info, even added a little, did a 'save as' to .jpeg, and the data's still there--usually.  Sometimes (again, no reason why) I get blank fields.

Anyhoo, you say you had to use a special program to edit the data; is it maybe tagging on that information in some unusual way that other software isn't dealing with properly?

My brain hurts; off for the night to go BBQ and drink.

No, about 99.8% of the time, If I can view the information in my program, I an view it with "File Info" in photoshop, but not in this case. The program I use is just a lot easer to mess with the iptc deta than using the "File Info".

Very odd. Maybe I can get one of the files uploaded so you can see what im talking about.

You may want to try Picture-Desk Batch Graphic Format Converter a try and see if it fits your needs.

Its not free but its not expensive at all either, only $40. Get the demo first ofcorse and see if it does what you need before going by the buying option ;)
