Have you heard the good news?

SHOUT! FACTORY ACQUIRES CULT FAVORITE
COMEDY SERIES MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000
FOR WORLDWIDE HOME ENTERTAINMENT
AND DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION

LOS ANGELES, CA - Adding to its expansive library of comedic TV
offerings, Shout! Factory secured the worldwide home entertainment and
digital download rights to the long running American cult television
comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K.) This announcement
was made by Shout! Factory President Garson Foos.
Under the terms of the multi-year agreement, Shout! Factory will be the
exclusive worldwide home entertainment and digital media distributor
for Mystery Science Theater 3000 branded properties which include a
vast library of original episodes that have never-been-available on DVD
or for digital download.
“Mystery Science Theater 3000 is a true cult-classic series. Its
high-camp rendition of B-movies to the small screen makes it one of the
most memorable pop culture shows of our time,” said Garson Foos,
President of Shout! Factory. “MST3K lines up perfectly with Shout!
Factory brand. We’re thrilled to work with Jim to further the legend of
MST3K on DVD and in the digital marketplace.”
“We are thrilled to be at Shout! Factory. It is a really a great fit
for Mystery Science Theater 3000,” said Jim Mallon, President of Best
Brains, Inc. and a producer/director/writer of MST3K. “Shout! Factory
totally gets the world of MST3K and has shown great respect for Joel,
Mike, the Mads and the quirky little bots. They have already issued us
lockers. We look forward to great new releases ahead.”
 —————-
Our source at Shout Factory says they are looking at the first release
around mid-year and they have not made any decisions about what whether
they will be single releases or sets.
Volume 10.2 will be the final Rhino release.
Stay tuned for more, as we get it!

I was never happy with Rhino's format, although I know legality was the final arbiter.

Hopefully Shout will be able to put together something that I will throw money at.

My tapes are getting very worn out!

I'd love to know how Shout! will be able to find all the missing release forms/ people to resign digital versions that Rhino wasn't able to.   As you say, legality was the final arbiter on the craptacular amount of MST3k that's been put on DVD.  Most of the consent forms were only for TV rights, so new deals have to be signed for anything else.  That's IF you can get the guys who were pissed at the treatment of their movie to sign them again.

What I didn't like about Rhino's effort was the format.  Why package three or four non-linear episodes and sell it for $25 to $50?  That's a bad solution to a thorny problem.  If they had released the single episodes that they legally could have and sold them for a reasonable price, I would have bought every single one.  There will be a day, not too far in the future, when these copyright issues will simply expire and the original perpetrators of this bad cinema will get zero compensation for their 'efforts'.  I'm not going to spend money now on Rhino's bits and pieces of MST3K - my VHS collection is superior.

I guess that I'm hoping Shout will be more proactive in pursuing legal agreements to get a more cohesive set of discs on the market.  Short of that, releasing single episodes is the only smart solution.

Yeah, I didn't have the heart to mention what current copyright law is.

Thanks Walt/ WB!

Heh, yeah. Life + 70 yrs is a long time -- even for B movies made in the 50s. And hey, as long as Mickey Mouse is at risk of becoming public domain, we can expect to see that term extended again!

I traded in my fun blog for several legal blogs. Or, "blawgs," as the cutesy attorney blawgosphere likes to call 'em.

You can get your fix at http://www.rifftrax.com/.

Watch the Star Wars Christmas Special Rifftrax.

And Roadhouse.  And Battlefield Earth.

Rifftrax is golden.

I prefer the recently launched Cinematic Titanic http://cinematictitanic.com/wpmu/index.php Which is more or less everyone who didn't go to Rifftrax. Except Jim Mallon, who is the devil.

Rifftrax seems a bit too meanspirited, and they're riffing movies I don't even want to watch, let alone own.
