So this guy wanted me to take a look at his PC because his sound and USB ports aren't working on his motherboard. I say okay, it just seems like a driver issue and I'll look for it and try to figure it out. Problem is, I can't figure out what type of mobo he has and windows won't find me the right drivers automatically. More or less, I feel like I'm stuck.

Is there a diagnostic program that can tell me the make/model of his mobo? Or a more complete driver list for motherboard components?
?

When you boot the computer up it should say the motherboard model number near the bios version.  Should be all you need from there.

Found it. I'm getting some weird error. Apparently it is common with ECS mobos -- windows auto-driver thing thinks the onboard is something completely different than what it really is.

Thanks. I was just looking in the wrong spot. :D

No problem.  I'm not surprised, the windows auto installer is a POS.

I've been using FreshDiagnose recently to figure out what all the components in a machine are.

It's pretty good, but you have to be careful sometimes.  Every so often, it will recommend a beta driver as the newest one.  And I always check the release date.  It can get a bit wonky at times, but I like it.  It offers multiple download sites with automatic links to the manufacturers website as well as through their own mirrors.  Good download speeds as well.
