Reasons for banning me vary.

In order for bans to mean something, we need to ban the whole IP address thingy so mofos don't just make a new account.

It's trivially easy to avoid an IP ban.  Takes about 20 minutes, tops.

Hopefully, it only takes about 20 seconds to ban someone.  So, if the mods are persistent then the banee should get frustrated and go away after a while.

Goodbye, again, Hyu.

You're being a bad Jew.

I get that a lot, oddly enough. Best variation was "You're retroactively justifying Hitler's actions!", shouted at me when I showed up at a Swift Boat Veterans for Truth rally with a Jews for Kerry/Edwards sign.

Teleku:  I had a great time (as best I recall, you also studied abroad in Japan, or were going to, or lived there at some point?) in Nagoya -- actually lived out in the countryside on Kokudo Ichigousen, Japan's equivalent of Route 66, next to a truck stop and surrounded by rice fields, about an hour and a half outside of Nagoya.  Joined Nanzan's hip-hop dance crew for the semester, visited fun places, had interesting experiences.  Aside from the usual Tokyo/Kyoto/Nara etc., a few lazy fall days spent in Innoshima just relaxing and listening to J-Reggae (Takacha, who's got this one song called 'Umimite', I think it is, that's incredibly addictive) with a fiery Italian JET girl, and mountain climbing in Daisetsuzan national park in Hokkaido, were a couple of my favorites.

Not so favorite?  Arriving in Tokyo to stay with my old sophomore year roommate and his family for a four-day weekend, immediately going from fine-and-dandy to vomiting-6-times-in-3-hours-and-feeling-like-I'm-about-to-die on my arrival, his mom printing me out an article (which I can only half-read, especially in that state) telling me that I've probably come down with the Norwalk Virus (never heard of it before) and that dozens of people have died from it as it's reaching epidemic proportions, hastily scribbling out a makeshift last will and testament on my laptop in case I'm added to one of those dozen (and feeling like I might be), and only fully recovering days later as I'm about to take the train home back to Nagoya.  Awesome vacation+++!

What'd you get up to while you were there?  Or have you not gone yet?  Please do refresh my memory.  Generally on AIM as "JoeSchmoeIsntAHo" in case this thread / my latest account is getting nuked.

I don't know what the deal is lately here at f13, but there are some batshit insane (oh, i saw this term in Maxim the other day while I was leafing through it -- yes, people read the articles) threads occurring lately. The hell is going on around here?

But to derail the thread further, my girlfriend and I rode to Disney World the other day with her cousin and her cousin's boyfriend, and they couldn't stop talking about how great Darkfall was. I think I peed a little.  swamp poop

Anyway, I think we should go back to our respective threads, and mourn the Bucs loss today.

I didn't spot the happenings here until today, so apologies for being a week late to the party.

Frankly, I agree with the bunch of people a few pages back who're saying the whole geldon ban is out of order.  I think Geldon's "frat boy" simile is as poor as it would be possible to come up with, but there definitely has, over the last while, been a feeling of a very small inner bunch of friends who egg each other on in a private forum to do stuff to others that's frankly only understood when you read their comments in this thread about it being funny for them.  I've read through this thread a couple of times now in an attempt to understand it and it's not exactly a great example of transparency of process.

Geldon was a bit annoying, yes.  But he added a source of contrary opinions in a board that - particularly in the gaming areas - is pretty monochromatic on the shades of opinion front.  And on the scale of internet annoying posters he wasn't even in the top quartile.  His posts often had content.  Wrong and foolish as I may have thought it, it was content nonetheless.  I criticised him pretty openly a couple of times, and found his posting a bit annoyingly naive, but I'd rather have that than dreary uniformity.

Schild is doing the hurt "you can't even remember who I've banned it's so rare" thing, but that should be the case.  People shouldn't get banned simply to provide snorting-milk-out-the-nose amusement for a small circle who have circle-jerked themselves into a state of largely irrational group-dislike for someone.  His comment in the thread on his blog about the episode is better written and clearer than any of the cack-handed attempts to justify the banning in here.  And the fact that the person who seems to have banned him is the person who invited him back sucks, as well as reeking of rapid distancing.  If it was actually planned then that is even worse.

Well, thanks for providing such a well-thought-out and considered reply.  Probably too much content there, though.  Next time, why not consider breaking it up into a series of responses?

You think, from what I said, that I view them as interesting?  The only matter of interest would be who or what will be decided as unworthy of F13 next.

I posted about how it was a foolish, petty and vindictive response apparently motivated by nothing more than the personal tastes of a tiny number of board posters.  Aside from an absolutely nonsensical post about F13 being a 'democracy' (perhaps looking up the word "oligarchy" would help in future: I don't remember the "ban Geldon" vote going up, and I'm absolutely confident that the answer would have been "no" to that one), there has been no justification of the decision other than a couple of people withgreen names saying they thought it was funny.

The tone of your responses pretty much backs up what I said: dismissive, condescending and supercilious.  You may disagree with what i said - I would expect nothing else - but much of it had not yet been addressed, let alone "done to death".  Posting after a three-day pause to a thread in the top eight of a forum is hardly necroing.

Funny, it might just be me but... "has almost always functioned as" doesn't mean the same thing as 'is' in my book.

It might just be that I suck at trying to care about a guy who would post three times in a row about his personal bullshit in nearly every single thread he was involved with, obsessivly discussed the fact he couldn't edit and that people didn't like him, (almost) always spoke without logic or humor, and was just all around fucking annoying every time he touched his keyboard at this site... which happened to be all fucking day long... but I fail to understand why you care so much about this.

Also a democracy does not require a referendum on every matter.

Bingo.

Mostly though, when I say democracy, I mean the appointed judges (judges are still appointed in america amirite  awesome, for real [I suppose there's even a nomination process, even though I do get to pick them]), generally make the final decision in a group effort in terms of what happens with users on f13. Since day 1 it's been a group decision. Maybe a republic would have been a better description.

Anyway, point is, very rarely do I flex my skull-crushing hand to determine the fate of the users. There are very few times where I don't defer the decision to the mods. Though, sometimes, a number of times in fact, I step in and say it's not worth a banning yet or I lighten the punishment. But yes, there are times where my say is final. Like with gold spammers and ban avoidance (but even I let Hyu stick around a few months after he dicked around a third time).

I'd kinda decided to leave this one, since velorath had made my point for me, despite the gaping flaws in lamaros's arguments ("Bingo" is about the least aposite summary you could have given).  But what the hell here we go: no, it's not a democracy, nor is it a republic.  Each involve some measure of elections or plebiscites, depending on whether it is primarlily the Athenian or the Westminster model upon which the example draws.  Why even bother pretending about that?  Since you raised it, it's an oligarchy, and a self-perpetuating one at that.  And no, there's nothing wrong with that in itself: I've said myself, before, that you do the work and pay the bills.  It's a website, not a state (although, as Geldon said, the donation model does introduce new factors there).

But petty and vindictive bans that amount to little more than in-jokes, and which relate to behaviour nowhere near as outright unpleasant as that committed without consequence in the past week or so by more "in" members can't then be justified by the flinging around of a quick "hay guys we're all empowered here!"  Yes, his posting annoyed me sometimes.  But we need something to argue with, or you end up with the bleak monoculture that is developing in the gaming and (to an extent) politics forums.

Endie, you're a smart guy.  Just do some light reading on Geldon.  He wasn't banned because one or two people in the Secret Cabal disliked him.  Also: ban avoidance, which is a big reason he was let go.  If there was a mistake here, it was letting him post for so long after his second coming.  Also read the part about how many people have been banned here.  As for voting, also read the posts surrounding Geldon's posts and observe his contributions to discussions.  It's just not as horrible as you see it.

Of course, given the color of my name, I don't expect you to take my word for it.

Don't worry, you're not due for a banning until the April Purges.

I'm just feeling slighted because you have your private forum and you STILL feel the need to post in threads after they went to the den.

Which I absolutely hate because it gives people the ability to make cheap shots without other people being able to react, and it invalidates the "Frozen in time for its stupidity" purpose as well.
