A school friend just revealed to me that he has the most ridiculous PS1 library. Needless to say, I'm ecstatic to go back and play some RPGs that I missed. First and foremost is FFT as I'd never had the chance to play it.

What I've played:

MGS1
FF7 (Finished), FF8 (4th disc, never finished - Worth finishing?)
Dragoon Saga? (Schild, dragoon something. RPG where you transform, what was it?)
GT whatever. I don't like GT.
Parappa (Heart)
Cool Boarders
Suikoden I (Never beat it. Got to the point where you get the castle.)
Bushido Blade (Heart awesome, for real Heart)

I think that's it. Well, a few others like MoH and other stuff.

So, suggest away!

I like the Vandal Hearts games a lot. Not sure which one I played, 1 or 2.

FFIX was better than 8.  A real old school (somewhat forced) vibe.  Ending is tripe though.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2.  Best of the series, IMO.

Bushido Blade.

Vagrant Story.

Don't let anyone trick you into playing Chrono Cross.   I really don't get the love for this one.  Attempts to replay stall out pretty early.

I'm curious about Koudelka (predecessor to Shadow Hearts) and Persona 2, but I haven't played either.  SCHILD, DO YOU HAVE EITHER OF THESE?

Suikoden I & II.  How could you not?  Especially II.  Xenogears, Grandia... there are so many!

Er.. ok, yeah, there's some I did play, but never got far enough into to mention. I have played Suikoden I and a bit of Xenogears. I always looked at Grandia and thought it looked appealing.

I also played the shit out of Bushido Blade.

Word.  Vandal Hearts (the first one; never played the sequel) is one of my all-time favorite PSX titles.

I never got to play Vandal Hearts but I got to watch everyone else play the hell out of it.  Still, I had good fun... of course, that was back in England where I actually had friends.   Heartbreak  Grandia was fun, but not as good as the other ones mentioned here.  I've played and really liked most of the ones Stray mentioned but they're not rpgs.  Most of them are better than rpgs.  Really.

I will second these mentions.

Finding a copy of Suikoden II however might be a bit difficult (unless you are willing to ebay for it, and even then, the price is likely to be pretty high.)

I found Suikoden 1 to be kind of ass even back when I was accepting of JRPGs.
Vandal Hearts rocks hardcore though.
The Arc the Lad trilogy and the Lunar Remakes are pretty good though.

QFE. Some excellent suggestions, 'specially Vagrant Story. I don't know whether FFIX is worth playing... I enjoyed it up to halfway through the 3rd disc and I just stopped.

You mean Legend of Dragoon, Nix. And that game is poopy.

Honestly, the list of MUST PLAY PS1 titles is really short. Go read the top 20 make fun of people list and you'll have what you should play right there.

Add Suikoden 1 & 2 to that. I know they're not on the list, but they're great games. And uh, that's it!

I have Persona 2. I should really play that more on my PSP.

I do not have Koudelka. I should really get that, rip it, and play it on my PSP.

I have a copy of Suikoden 2 but it's the PAL version.  All of my PS1 games are PAL.  I suppose you could play it if the console is modded that direction.  I assume it still works, who knows?

You're so sweet and kind. Can I come over for dinner?

I let my buddy look at your list of suggestions and he has both Suikoden I & II and Xenogears. He has to check on Vandal Hearts. He has a ridiculous amount of games in general. I want to drool all over his original FF7. I wish I could fine mine.

Ah, forgot about those. Cool shit.

One more to add: Heart of Darkness

I know you've got your mind set on JRPG's and all, but at least get some of these platformers if you haven't played them (Heart of Darkness, Rayman, Oddworld..).

Ogre Battles
Tactics Ogre
FF8 is better then 9, I couldn't stand a single character in 9, but both were rather weak esp when you compare them to X.
Was Chrono Cross on PS1?  I think it was, while not great it didn't suck money balls imo.
I also vote for playing at least one megaman title (the first X perhaps?  think that was ps1), umm Front Mission games are kind of fun, but I dunno about the PS1 versions I think I played only one of the ps2 iterations.  But yeah, be less lazy and read the top20 threads...

*meant 9 not 8, the teacher w/ the whip was alright in 8*

A nation consists of its laws. A nation does not consist of its situation at a given time. If an individual's morals are situational, then that individual is without morals. If a nation's laws are situational, that nation has no laws, and soon isn't a nation.

Man I still have all my PS1 games, I want to go through them for you and see if I can find anything that I can recommend. I have something like 200 PS1 games, so I am sure I have some fluff and downright questionable stuff in it, but I am sure I can find something that you should play.

Off the top of my head though, I recommend R-Type Delta, Einhander, Trap Gunner, Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha, No One Can Stop Mr. Domino, Silent Hill, Ape Escape, Ray Crisis, G-Darius, Thunder Force V, Super All-Star Slammin' D-Ball, Jumping Flash, Alundra, Tecmos Deception 1,2,3, Tobal No. 1, Tekken 3, Blood Omen, Soul Reaver, Klonoa, Tomba 1,2, Brave Fencer Musashi, Colony Wars 1, 2, Misadventures of Tron Bon, Dino Crisis, Alien Resurrection, Alone in the Dark the New Nightmare, Tecmo Stackers, Devil Dice, One, Wipeout XL... That is all at this moment...

My Genesis games... LET ME SHOW YOU THEM!

When did this become rare?  I have the FF NES cart.  And the map/bestiary.  I think I liked VII more than IX.  Do not play VIII.

Hmm... Parasite Eve?  The PS1 list is embarassingly small.  I feel like I need to pad it.  I will reinforce Soul Reaver (do not play sequels), Silent Hill, Vagrant Story, Symphony of the Night.  Protip: track 2 on the SotN CD is audio.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

I've still got mine.  I think I've even got the memory card with the save games on it.

Out of all the other RPGs for the PS1 mentioned here, the only one I finished wasn't mentioned by anyone else (but Signe) yet you mentioned it... Xenogears is definitely the one I'd recommend, and how anyone else could not mention this as RPG LUV PLUS MECHS deserves to seriously have their RPG heads examined.

Suikoden 1 was ok, so was the first Persona and the FFs, but none of them had me playing PS1 as much as Xenogears, and it was the only game that I felt compelled to actually finish.

They printed the Greatest Hits version. It made the case look hideous and the art inside was taken away, well at least from Canadian releases.
