Green peace a running a poll on their website which asks people to vote for a name for a whale.

The leading name so far, with over 60% of the votes, is Mister Splashy Pants.

You can vote too.

I don't know.  There should be.  I almost named my first kitty "Stir-Fry" just to keep him humble.  It just didn't suit him, though.

No option for Lamp Oil? That said, Mr Splashy Pants is fucking splendid. If I didn't already have a performance pseudonym, I'd go with that. "And on guitar...Mr Splashy Pants!"

I shared this with a vintage hippy in our office. She thought it was kind of offensive to the whale to name him Mr Splashy Pants. I then went into a  convoluted explanation from the point of view of a whaler which ended with...how could anyone harpoon a whale named Mr Splashy Pants? Babu? Aiko? K-thwang! Mr Splashy Pants? Noooo!!!

I know that I, personally, could never kill a whale named "Mister Splashy Pants" -OR- an elephant named "Stampy".  That's about where my promises end, though.

Wouldn't it make more sense to confuse the whalers by naming it Dolphin?

At least the tuna fishers apologize when they kill dolphins by accident.  Whalers go out specifically intending to kill them some whale.

What's the significance of naming this particular whale?  Are they going to tattoo the name on its back?

They've tagged a number of whales with satellite tracking devices already but some of them don't have names yet so that's what the vote is for:

So they are helping the whalers by giving them means to locate their targets?

Hell, I am a paying member of Greenpeace, but that sounds dumb to me.

Sure if they have access to their satellite feed and access codes. Also, whales aren't hard to find, which is one of the reasons they'll be gone soon.

Quote
Why the Japanese Fleet can't use this map to find and kill the humpbacks.

Greenpeace has a long history of defending the whales of the Southern Ocean by activists putting themselves between the whale and the harpoon. We would never let a whale be put in danger. The posting of the location of the whales on this website has been delayed to ensure the whaling fleet cannot locate them through the Great Whale Trail.

In addition, to justify their whaling as "science", the Fisheries Agency of Japan (FAJ) fleet is obliged to follow strict pre-determined search patterns or 'transects', when they hunt the whales. They claim this is to show that they are doing random population sampling. Any deviation for a single whale or large groups would automatically negate their so-called "scientific" programme.

Mr. Splashy Pants is so much more appropriate for one of those.
