I am a simple man. I harvest wheat, I make bread. So I am not certain how schild reconciles his hatred for preview hype by "games journalists" and this sort of thing. But certainly it looks interesting.

It's a fresh pile of graphics on a very proven gameplay type. One that isn't based on twitch. There's really no way to fuck it up. And it's totally niche and the company doesn't flood the market with watered down sequels.

It doesn't really take a preview to be hyped about the fact they're making a new one. Omiyasoft isn't Eidos and Culdcept isn't Tomb Raider.

After playing the demo, I can honestly say I was thoroughly disappointed. I'm not saying the game is bad at all. Maybe I don't get it (though I usually like this kind of game).

I guess I'll just have to sign a copy out of Gamestop when it releases. Maybe the demo is just a piece of trash.

Plays like a board game (fun!), should be classified w/ my other board games.  Seriously, if this was XBLA, I would pay for it.

My hate for disc swapping knows no bounds.  Wtf is the point of all the extra storage anyways? Backgrounds and music?

How many times did you play?  Took me about 4 times before I stopped getting wafflestomped and figured out how to play.   Said I got new cards once I won and the next time I played it looked like I did (although that may have just been a better shuffle). Game was more fun when I finally got the concepts behind it.

The color share just seems to be a weighted ownership indicator.  It takes into account how many of the same colored tiles you have and how developed they are.  You can go straight to "hotel" without owning all properties, but your tile will be worth a lot more if you have other developed properties of the same color.  I'm not sure if this affects +ST and +HP values gained from land ownership.

I like it. It's battle monopoly. $40 bucks and in February, I'm probably picking this title up.  Multiplayer should be a blast, although I really have little experience playing card games.  Glad the element of chance is there.

Edit: Crap, Lost Odyssey is being released in February also.

Do you weigh like 600lbs or something? Or do you just sit down an play a ton of different games at one sitting?

No, I just fucking hate swapping discs.

It's annoying.  I tend to play games that are fully loaded about 10x more than I play games that require a disc.

I don't see why this requires a disc anyways.  Make it 1 GB and drop it on my HDD and I'll play that mother fucker through the teeth.  Make me put a disc in and I'm liable to not play more than the 5-6 hour binge after ripping it out of the plastic.

Get a PS3.  You can load games to disk.

Heh, I wish that were true. I definitely have the HD space with the elite.  Digital download would rule for standard 360 games.

But your stance is just a little weird.  There's something else going on here.

Just my experiences.  Games that let me run off the HDD get so much more play than games that make me put a disc in.

PS3 lets you load games to disk?  That system just doubled in value to me.  To bad there's like 1 game I want to play on it.  Maybe when my summer bonus rolls around.

I know I'm not alone on this disk thing.  It's ridiculous.

Also, is it disk or disc?

I hate disc swaps too (especially since I am being so anal with my 360), but it only keeps me from playing a game if I already like what is in, and I'm sort of lukewarm about whatever I am thinking about putting in at the moment.

Yeah, disk swaps suck.  Also Culdcept, meaning the first one, was not a simple game.  Simple framework, yeah, but you start getting some of the weirder cards, then you get into the strategic bits of land ownership, and it gets complex.  I love complex.  I love cards.  I'm not a big fan of Monopoly, but in this case my pieces fight so it's all good.  So I had to decide if I wanted to drop a dwarf (green) on this red square just so I can hold it, or take my chances and wait to pull a red creature... or maybe I want to improve an existing square instead of summon a creature at all.  Improving squares gives me more mana over time, but claiming a square also does this... unless it's a green creature on a red square that gains no land-effect bonuses and will possibly be assraped when my opponent stops in with his minotaur (red).  Maybe I have a shield or armor in my hand, though, and it might defend my dwarf....  Complex.  I love it.

If Culdcept Saga sucks, I can always love and hug my original and call it George.

So. 3 days.

Any chance someone wants to do some sort of f13 league? I know there's no in-game tools, but uhm. This game can consume you. And it's best to be consumed with others.

I'm not thinking a tournament, but more, a list of people who play others whenever possible for say 6-8 weeks and final score (in terms of wins and losses), will be the outcome.

Also, I figure by the end of the week, people will know which maps are worth putting in the league and if any cards simply need to be banned.

I'll most likely be playing this game mostly with my fiancee and my daughter.

My local gamestop got in two copies today and I managed to snag one of them. I figure I'll give it a try with my daughter tonight and see what happens.

I made the mistake of relying on Best Buy for this round of video game releases, which was a huge mistake on my part, as they didn't get any copies of Culdcept in at all, or else so few copies they sold out in about 30 minutes.  Considering where I live, I'm going to go with that they just didn't order any.  Anyway, now I wait on Amazon.  I'm really looking forward to this, though, so I'm rather annoyed I didn't get to start playing it tonight.

Just picked up the only copy the nearby Gamestop had available.  Unfortunately I have to go to work in an hour so I won't be playing it until after I get off.

They can also be awefully retarded.  I hit the comp with a "move 1" spell to bankrupt them and they could have used a haste (move 6-8) but didn't.  Still, that was awefully difficult (yay luck) for a first encounter.

Yea, the first encounter was way harder than the DC or PS2 games.

But the randomness was on my side for the 9 cards I got afterwards. Got some sick shit. Mostly red too, which was nice, since that's what color I normally play in it.

Oh good god.

Sealed decks.

Guys.

I propose a league, 3-6 months in length, just have to play a minimum of say, 10-15 games. At least every player once. All sealed deck. I'm going to tinker with this this weekend.

Can you trade?

Not with other players online, no.

Quote
1. Can we trade cards online?

There is no card trading online for the game. We thought this may offer an unfair advantage to those who could exploit such a feature in their favor. Instead, we made the process of unlocking cards fairly easy and themed against the map you are playing in. For example, your odds of getting Earth element cards are higher in a map themed for Earth elements.

2. Is it possible to wager cards, as in place a bet on the win? Winner gets card?

Yes. There is a betting feature within the game for those who would opt to increase the stakes of the game by wagering cards. Instead of selecting and negotiating which cards are to be wagered, the player who hosts the match determines how many cards will be won or lost. After the game is completed, the computer randomly selects the cards available within the loser’s collection and takes them from inventory and adds them into the winner’s inventory. This feature is enabled offline in Versus mode only. We did not enable this feature online. It was a tough call on that, but we felt this feature could have been also unfairly exploited to help others gain hard to find cards faster than others.

3. Can you choose to forfeit a match online thus honorably admitting defeat?

A point of concern was that some people may be inclined to quit the game even though it may be early within the game. If we made an option to let people out of the game this way, we projected that it could become a big problem within the game’s online community. As a compromise, we made it so that you can opt out through hardware features. Once out, an AI character replaces the player who quit to continue the match until the end. Granted, this may not be the universal answer to this dilemma that all online games encounter, we believe it is a good compromise between fairness and the spirit of competition.

4. What happens when someone disconnects from the game if you are winning?

As I alluded to in the previous question, an AI-controlled character will come in to replace the person who disconnects, thereby ensuring that the game will go on. At the end of the game, those who remained will be rewarded for staying in the form of cards.

5. Will there be down-loadable cards?

We are currently not planning for downloadable cards. Our concern was to ensure that we attain a balance within the game. Making downloadable cards would create a level of unfair balance as some prefer not to pay for additional content whereas some others would opt to “juice” their Books. It was a toss-up between which path to follow, and we have ultimately decided to go for the balance factor.

6. Is there online ranking?

Yes, there is online ranking within the game! There are 4 different criteria on the style of the online match: Standard Match, Standard Blind Match, Alliance Match, and Alliance Blind Match. There is a Leaderboard for each, so feel free to try the different match styles!

7. Is it possible to win cards in an online game?

Yes! Regardless of the match type, ALL players who continue playing until online games end are rewarded with cards. The only difference is that the winner gains more cards versus the loser, but still, everyone is in for some treats once the match is done. We hope everyone will find this to be a reason for playing until the end of a set match.

8. Will the US version have all the cards that are currently in the Japanese version?

Almost. All the cards in the Japanese version will be available and none will be kept away. The only difference is a special card that was only available through a special pre-order offer that was made in Japan. Since this was a Japan-only offer, that particular card was not included in the U.S. version of the game.
