I bought it.
It's fantastic multiplayer ala Dark Alliance.
But w/ XMen. The graphics are fun to look at and if you can get 2-3 other people to play with you it's excellent.
You get to advance your players much like Return of the King. Where you invest points into skills that you can use.
If you have someone to play with, it's worth 50 bucks. If you're looking for a rich single player experience, skip it.
Guess I'm not much for reviews.

It's one of the better action-rpg's around imo. As far as comic book or X-Men games go, I'm not qualified to judge. After 15 years or so, I've only started picking up comics again recently, which in turn means I haven't played very many comic book games either. I didn't even know who half of these characters were before I played this (though the game itself does a good job of introducing the X-Men backstory). From the comic book based games I have played though, I would rank this as one of the best ones.
I haven't been too busy lately, so I finished it in about 5 days. That's shameful catassing on my part, because it could be a fairly long game for the average person. Probably 2 or 3 weeks worth (20-30 hours total), maybe longer. I wouldn't have done that if I thought the game wasn't cool though. So, all in all, it was a good waste of time.
One word review is: Better. A better waste of time than Fable, at least. While the combat mechanics are very similar (lots of button-mashing), and Fable was prettier to look at, the overall game here was much better. Like Fable, or any action RPG for that matter, it's a little too easy, and there's not a whole lot of depth or exploration involved, like you'd find in a traditional PC RPG. But I think that's just a gripe with the genre as a whole. Dark Alliance was a great game, and it's even more dumbed down than this one.
Compared to Fable though, what it has going for it is that it's longer, has a better story, has more sidequests and tasks to do, and it's a lot more action-packed. The part I enjoyed the most was the large variety of characters and power types to mess around with, which in turn meant better gameplay. And if I had played co-op, it'd easily be the more enjoyable game.
What's sad is everywhere I've read, Fable has consistently recieved great 5 star reviews, all much higher than this one has. Now, I liked Fable, but I just don't see how or why it's the better game, except in graphics. Neither one of them is 5 star worthy, really, but if had to rate them, I'd give X-Men a 4, and Fable a 3.
Is it better off as a rental? Possibly. But most people would have to rent it 2 or 3 times to beat it, I think. Still, that's probably the better way to go. Rent it and get a friend or two for co-op.
-----
I'll just add a little more here: Like I said above, the best part was the amount of characters and power-types to mess with (like 15 in total). Like CoH, it's a breath of fresh air for RPG's, but even moreso. Some of these characters are so unique, they wouldn't exactly fit in any of the typical RPG archetypes at all. None of them were boring either, and none of them had a skill that I felt wasn't worth using. I'd love to see more games move away from the traditional RPG archetypes and implement more unique classes like this one did.
For example, I never played anything in an RPG like Nightcrawler, whose mutant power is teleportation. Teleporting is more of a utility power at first, and with Nightcrawler's lack of hitpoints, it wouldn't seem he'd be a good first choice for melee. But eventually, he's one of the highest (or at least safest) damage dealers available, with a high chance to land criticals with every hit. If you've seen X-2, his combo attack is similar to the opening sequence in that film (hopping from target to target out of thin air, kicking the shit out of everything on the gamemap). It's different, at least.
Another one I haven't seen before is something like Gambit. He's sort of a tank-mage hybrid, with staff attacks and ranged attacks from throwing kinetically charged playing cards. Nothing special there. Neither the staff nor the range attacks do much damage by themselves, but what makes him different is that the cards can kinetically charge the objects around you and cause them to explode (much of the game environment is destructible). So for example, if his initial card attack isn't powerful enough to directly blast through certain structures or objects, they'll eventually detonate shortly afterwards anyways. It's hard to get it right, but if you do, there's a good chance an explosion could kill everything on screen (besides your team, of course). Jubilee works in the same way, but her secondary skills are flashes/blinds rather than melee skills like Gambit.
Some characters are pretty straightforward in their roles (Cyclops, Collosus, or Wolverine), but for the most part, it's pretty flexible in how you want to play them. Iceman, for example, has more support-type skills available to him, but I tried to augment that with ice armor and melee skills. It turned out it wasn't a bad choice. Nothing really is...Except Jean Grey -- Word of advice: Don't play her. Her AoE is too powerful for a tightly spaced, dungeon crawler game like this. This might be the real reason why the game became too easy for me, but I got to a point where I couldn't resist. So if you decide to buy the game, and want it to last longer, avoid playing her. Anyways, I'll stop there. That's probably too long for a review, but I hope it helps.

She's at L14 in my coop game, and so far I have the absolute most fun playing her. Something about picking up enemies and hurling them off a cliff makes my fingers tingle. Edit: stray is right in everything he said in his review.

Something about picking up enemies and hurling them off a cliff makes my fingers tingle. Yeah, she's great fun. Another reason I didn't want to stop playing her is because she's like my favorite X-Man out of the bunch too. Once you GM her AoE skill though, you'll see what I mean. Beast does like twice as much AoE damage with Propeller Kick, but it's slower and the cone of effect isn't even half the size as hers. With Jean, her spell will cover the entire screen, and then some. It's pretty stupid to have that kind of ability with a dungeon crawler type game. It's easy to just let dozens of opponents start swarming her, and take them out in one or two shots. The only ones she has any problems with is huge, mentally resistant characters, like the Sentinels or Juggernaut. I liked playing her, but I'm just saying it's hard to resist plowing through enemies like that, once you realize that you can. Even though she's cool to play, it's also like playing the game in ridiculously-easy-mode. Also, once you unlock a certain item in the Danger Room, and equip her with it, it's like playing in god-mode. The same item won't do the same for others.

Well, I went out and bought it.
I am very happy with it so far. The combat is fast and fun, if a bit hectic with 4 characters. Im going to try and get my GF to play coop with me. Wish me luck.

My gf doesn't play videogames because she deems it a waste of time, but she'll play this with me and my bud. So much more fun with more people.

First impression: my favorite comic book franchise translated into my favorite coin-op arcade game, Double Dragon.
I wrote some short impressions over at grimwell's pad, but I really like this game. I wish I could have traded Fable for it ;) Fun action beat-em-up with licensed superpowers. I need to get on the horn and get the boys over here for some co-op.

Ooooo, Coop, good, AND on GC? I'm interested. Tell me, is it overcomplicated? I mean, I like to get coop games that my kids can join in the fun with me (ages 4-6.) Is it cartoony violence or realistic violence?
