I've never seen anything like that.  I didn't even know it could happen!  I'd put a collar around that thing and name him Spike.

The largest mantis on record was 18 inches long.  Oh, and they also sometimes fly.  But only at night.  Fun.

I have never seen or posted this before. I did post a photo of our resident mantis on my pitcher plant in the hort thread, but this was odd enough to warrant its own thread (I thought).

Seriously, I sent this link around to the wildlife biologists in my office, and none of them had seen or heard of such a thing happening. They were shocked, SHOCKED!

"Ladies and gentlemen, uh, we've just lost the picture, but what we've seen speaks for itself. The Corvair spacecraft has apparently been taken over -- 'conquered' if you will -- by a master race of giant space ants. It's difficult to tell from this vantage point whether they will consume the captive earth men or merely enslave them. One thing is for certain: there is no stopping them; the ants will soon be here. And I for one welcome our new insect overlords. I'd like to remind them that as a trusted TV personality, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground sugar caves."

You can order your own praying mantis eggs and raise them in a terrarium! Then set them loose outside as a sort of garden warden. It's loads of fun. Sounds almost like a game.
