First and foremost, a huge disclaimer; hi2u, my name is Hoax!  I like peeveepee and enjoying being immature and stupid when I game online, or when I'm drinking or when it is sunny outside.  I dont like roleplaying because its only done well .0001% of the time.  I dont like crafting because its boring as shit and usually means I have to hear ppl cry about how useless crafted items are.  I really dont care about anything except playing versus intelligent opponents, although some pretty digital tits and/or cool looking shiney weapons never bothered me either.

Rumble Fighter (the game this post is about, which will be called RF from now on) is a KMMO that alone makes it a prime target for contempt from "mature" (mmo)gamers.  KMMO's are seemingly shoestring budget affairs with big grinds, girlymen and fucking godawful netcode for the most part.

However, there is a subset of KMMO which I have derived practically all of my quality non-console gaming from since I re-quit WoW a long time ago.  I call them action-mmo's.  The most famous of these games is Gunbound, thanks in large part to a big plug from the Pennyarcade guys back in the day.  If you've never played Gunbound, nor ever heard it discussed by some Asian kid on your local mass transit or while challenging someone to a rousing game of drunk mahjong I feel bad for you.  For real, give Gunbound a try, it's a solid little timewaster while still having enough persistence/achiever/barbiedoll elements that it just might hook ya.

Action-mmo's dont have a "world" but really GW doesn't either & WoW's is mostly inconsequential window dressing while you travel between instance portals.  So get off your high horse unless you are playing EVE.  You enter an action-mmo and you are in the lobby.  There are game rooms.  That's where you you play.  If you are lucky the lobby lets you chat to other players.  Those of you that haven't been living under a cave and have played any fps ever online should know what this looks like.

But these games are sort of MMO's because you have an avatar, and a major reason you keep playing is that you can equip him/her with tons of items for looks, stats and whatnot.  There's the hook.  Its the same reason some people haven't quit EQ1 yet, why a romp through Diablo 1 or 2 can still be so damn rewarding.

RumbleFighter

The core gameplay of RF is 2-8 people fighting.  Here is a Youtube Video of some newbie combat using basic fighting.  Ok now that you've watched that you should understand the very basic mechanics.  I'm not going to waste finger-energy breaking the gameplay down for you.

So why is it not worth trying?
-Replay value:  There is very little, the game needs more maps more gamemodes more variety.  Imagine a AAA western title that stopped at level twenty.

-Netcode:  As always KMMO ports have strange lag issues that you just shouldn't have to deal with in our modern everyone has broadband world

-Community:  The game is free, the kiddies are in force, you will realize just how doomed humanity truly is.  Be prepared to think of b.net as an ivory tower of wisdom.

-The game is hard:  Seriously, I play these games a ton, I am very good at pvp.  This game is amazingly deep in terms of difficulty to master.  The reality is most of you MMO "gamers" are so used to sucking on the tit of the easy route you can't handle anything that doesn't just provide you DING!GRATZ for no actual effort.

Why its worth trying anyway

Because it has good core combat gameplay.  Seriously almost every action MMO (there haven't been many of them sadly) has done something nifty with their combat.  It takes skill.  It will make you want to punch the next 8 year old you see.  But it is very fun.  For added enjoyment plug in a controller and really get into it.  Also its a 300kb download.  You could put this game on all but the dinkiest of flashdrives.

Video looks amusing, and Gunbound was entirely entertaining for the week or so I played it. Out of curiousity, does RF work in firefox? Having to launch IE everytime i wanted to play Gunbound was obnoxious.

Is http://www.ogplanet.com/rf/ the official site? Googling it gave several download locations...

(Also, I'm a noob. whats the K in KMMO stand for? Korean?)

Heh. You should take a picture of the download and post a picture of it. Or maybe I've been trolling ICHC.com too much lately.

Also yeah ogplanet.com is the official site.

Just a quick final post on this subject.

OGplanet announced they will be doing bi-monthly instead of monthly new content pushes.  There are currently 11 fighting styles left to be ported from the Korean version and a fuckton of clothing and exo-cores.  I've also heard of 2-3 new gamemodes (including a soccer gametype) that we currently don't have.

So far they have added 2 maps 3 scrolls (fighting styles) 4 exo-cores (special power up items) and a bunch of clothing to the game.

Just to possibly stir a tiny bit more interest here's a fighting style list, you can find youtube videos for any of them.
Karate
KungFu
Kobudo
Ninjitsu
Jujitsu
Taekwondo
Taekkyeon
Shidokan
Jeet Kun Do
Boxing
Street
Renegade
Mao Gong
Murekwon
Muay Thai

I played it a bit and loved it, bought some of their Astros or whatever and geared up a bit, but havent had time to get back on for more than a match or two. Only hit level 5 or so; hope to give it another go this sunday as its quite enjoyable.

Rule of thumb w/ Korean games:  Dont try to use browsers other then IE to get the account/game download.

Should go like this:
-go to ogplanet.com
-click register
-enter email
-get email from ogplanet
-complete registration
-download game

If that isn't working using IE then post back here & I'll post something to their quite responsive support board.

Seemed to work, but Websites that force me to set the Internet Explorer as the default browser make me stabby.

Almost all Korean games retardedly interface w/ ActiveX in an odd way.  Last I heard their national banks wouldn't work w/ Vista was a result and much crisis ensued.  Point of fact, officially Rumble Fighter does not work w/ Vista at this time though I've heard ppl mention viable work arounds on the boards.

OK, now I am angry.

First they let me download the client, THEN they tell me I can't play because I foolishly entered "Germany" instead of USA/other as I usually do.

Fuckers.
