It definately has a handle the spinfuzor/ski-ing/jetpack action that made Tribes what it is.   I think the vehicles are a tad weak this time around, though.   Heavy Armor is also very much so now.

Not a large personal fan of Tribes, but I thought they could do a much better job on graphics and perhaps the engine. For example, when you fire the blaster(plasma gun), it kinda slows down my computer even on low settings...whereas on unreal 2004, I can get virtually no slow down on a fairly high setting on everything. Gameplay is nice though. I do agree, vehicles aren't too great this time around.

Tribes gameplay meets UT artwork.  I like it.  I noticed, tho, that they - like 2K4 - took the whole ragdoll thing over the top.  Every frag ends up in another floor routine in the Broken Spine Gymnastics meet.

I noticed this also. I thought to myself, "humm. I didnt know metal armor could flop like that"

Also, in the short time I played last night, so far it hasnt grabbed me with that feel that the old tribes games had.

The grappling hook is cool, but it was very jerky when I tried to use it.

I REALLY dont like that there is a Ski button now. and no Jump.

You have the beta installed, but cant connect? or you cant even get to the beta page?

If it is the second problem, try disabling your firewall for a few seconds.

Zone Alarm's web filtering was preventing me from getting past the "fill in this form" stage to the "get beta installer" stage.  Just shut it off for 30 seconds, and everything was fine.

Downloaded and played this at lunch today.

Not too bad. Had a few moments of either lagging like hell or getting stuck on geometry I couldn't get off of without shooting myself. I couldn't tell which. I didn't get a chance to play with vehicles. Very fast-paced.

Far too much UT 2K4 and too little Tribes for my liking. Vehicles, textures, lighting - straight from UT. Tribes gameplay wasn't slow, but it felt more...tactical than this.

Its currently a clusterfuck thanks to every 12-yo kid and their 10-yo brother d/ling it for free.  On top of that, theres a lot of "what does THIS do" experimentation going on.

I'm surprised that no one is bitching about the vehicle generation setup.  As I remember, T1 and 2 used a "fast-food order" kind of vehicle pad, whereas T3 simply has different pads that spawn pre-selected vehicles as regular intervals.  I dunno, maybe I'm missing something, ive spent a lot of time in Heavy Armor.

After spending some more quality time with it. I think I can say this game is going to really let down many Tribes fans.

It just doesnt feel right.

The vehicle spawn points are HORRIBLE! The vehicle controlls are horrible. With even a tiny bit of lag, the vehicles become unplayable.

Basically we have UT2k4 with jetpacks, rollerskates and crappy vehicles.

I am disapointed.

Not to mention the bug haemish found, where you can lag for a second, and then your stuck in the geometry untill you die. Pain in the ass. If I can find this in about 5 minutes, how could the dev team have missed it?

Vehicle spawn pads in T2 were a total pain until they changed their behaviour with a patch. I guess they decided to change things up, though a certain current Tribes-without-jetpacks mmo has a decent enough working vehicle pad.

I'll be sure to dload the demo and check it out, I logged a lot of hours with my flag nabbing madman friend the eqholic, waiting for his crazy ass to come over the horizon as I defended the base in my big ol' heavy suit. Before he went mod crazy and the only people playing were uberhardcore and routinely handed me my ass, anyway.

I expect most Tribes fans to hate this iteration, same as they hated Tribes 2. Some people just can't be pleased imo. And hey, an Irrational single player game...that alone should be worth the box cost.

Another big change that I see mentioned often but oddly not really complained about, is the scale of the maps.

Tribes 1 was built on the same engine as Starsiege, where massive HERCs (mecha) ran at high speeds between large facilities trying to kill each other or steal each others' flags.  So the terrain went on forever.  You really felt as if you were in a place, even if it was a desolate and  featureless place.  T2 did essentially the same, but T:V scraps that idea for smaller maps which seem to have an unreal (no pun) and directed game purpose.

I generally don't play many FPS games, but I loved the original Tribes, so I decided to give it a spin.

The game has the Tribes feel.  At least what I remember of it, and I like it.  Skiing, jetpacking, the three armor types.  While there's some things I don't really like, like armor config layout, and the way weapons and packs work with them, It's starting to gorw on me.  Other things I'm guessing are just beta problems, like a few of the crappy weapons, the semi-frequent server drops, and the occasional pc lockup.

You can tell they're trying to make combat faster, with the deployable items that anyone can use, and the smaller maps.  It makes sniping kind of pointless, but on the upside, you don't have to go off after a lone sniper who's out in the middle of nowhere, taking you out of the real action.  The item/vehicle spawning... well, it must be for balance's sake.  Doesn't really bother me too much.

They've said that server admins will be able to raise the number of players by editing the config files too, but how well the server will scale is yet to be seen.  I actually saw 40 person server up for a little while the other day, but it was full, so I couldn't try it out.   It would be nice if it could support up to 64 players, and had some larger maps, to suit other playstyles.  Have to wait and see.  Right now, I'm having a good time on the 32 player servers.  There's always the community who will come up with larger maps, and player mods for stuff like regular item spawning for those who enjoy that kinda stuff.

Overall, I really like it.  The graphics are good enough, and everything runs smooth on medium settings on my soon-to-be updated pc at 1024x768.  I rarely go more than a minute or two without being in a fight, the controls are pretty responsive, and I haven't had any real lag worth mentioning.

Also, I'm not sure if this is being included with T3, or if it'll be available after the fact, but there's an official mod that's being created for it which will turn the games into a Starsiege mech game.   It's called Starsiege 2844 IIRC, and you'll be able to play as the mechs or as infantry.

I was big into Starsiege and this mod is definitely a factor in my purchase decision.

Or you could just remove the sniper rifle. Snipers in multiplayer games hamper gameplay imo. I love the sniper rifle as much as the next guy, in single player. But to have some guy sitting in some remote corner of the map, not interacting much, but taking people out...that's just bad gameplay. It's horrid in Battlefield, and retarded in Planetside.

No sniper rifles, kplzthx.

Nah, I think the sniper rifle had it's place in the original Tribes. The only instakill was a headshot against light armour, if I remember correctly. The red laser beam exposed the firer pretty good, making him an obvious target if he didn't use "gun-n-run" and some tactics.

Whenever an opponent discards a card, Megrim deals 2 damage to that player.

Yea i think it's definitely needed, if only to catch those god damned lights that speed up with their jetpack, grab the flag and fly off at 40582049820 miles per hour accelerating down hills.

I'v found that the people who try to run off and camp some hill somewhere to get sniper kills just get grenaded/mortared by the heavies anyway.

And boy-oh-boy i can't wait until my favourite lan place gets this. CTF has never been so disgustingly frantic.

Has anyone else had any luck with the Rover spawn points?  I've tried three times.  On two occasions the game simply refused to spawn me.  On the third I fell through the world floor.

On the upside, the game did bother to calculate the velocity, perhaps towards some Virgil-inspired Tribes Hell, and I won the game award for speed by reaching something like 450,000 kph.

I like the maps but I can't say that I care for the gameplay very much. And in most of the games I played in, the vehicles for the most part sat around unused.

I've signed up like 4 times under different accounts. Everytime it says my key is being produced and to check back in 24 hours. It also says don't delete the install file. Now, there's no install file and its been 3 days.

I got my key immediately on fileplanet. It was displayed after I had completed the sign up process. I also got it in a mail.

I didn't get any "install file". I just proceeded to download the file as a ordinary fileplanet download.
