The only reason I say that is that right now he isn't waiting four hours either, so it's not like you are coming home to let him out. If he is going to be in later when you are at work, then it is worth getting the patern down now.

I would disagree a little bit about the not coming home at lunch. This will lessen the stress of you leaving more than once but most puppys cannot hold waste for 8 hours. So unless you want to give the doggie no choice but to poo where it shouldn't you will probably need to come home at lunch.

He can't hold waste for 30 minutes at this point.

When I took my dog to a trainer to stay overnight for 2 nights, the trainer made a comment about how much the dog peed and pooped. Such a small creature did all that?!?

It must be a combination of their small internal organs not having much storage space, and the fact that they are under stress. But this dog somehow broke the laws of physics and expelled more then it took in. At least it seemed this way.

That plus they are growing, so they process food on a high gear.

Coming home at lunch does help though, even if the puppy can't hold it for 4 hours yet.  He will be able to eventually, and then build up to 8 hours or more.  When we got our dog, I worked close enough to come home at lunch and let him out (and clean up any messes).  It helped reinforce the "let's go out and do your business" part, because that was the first thing I did after putting my stuff down - headed straight out the sliding door (I was lucky enough to live on the first floor).  Chances are, he'll have to do something, even if it's pee a tiny bit, and that lets you bring him in and praise him for doing his business outside and give him a treat.

If you aren't going to crate/box train him, then you really really have got to cut down on his space somehow.  As long as he can do his business in one corner of your kitchen and then safely hang out in the far corner, it's going to be harder for him to learn that going inside is a bad thing.  Plus, it just gives him more space to do his business in.  That's the other reason why coming home at lunch at first is a good thing - it let's you clean up anything he did in the morning, so that you don't have even more waiting for you to clean up when you get home at night.  Plus the stink factor is slightly minimized in a closed house.

Oh, another thought, since we're getting ready to go into fall - get him used to standing still have having his paws/coat wiped off after you come inside if it's wet/raining.  It makes things tons easier than trying to deal with a dancing wet/muddy dog inside the house.  Dry him off first, then give the treat though, so that he'll accept it as part of the routine.

So has he left shit all over your kitchen lately?

Here's a good resemblance of my dog (or, rather, my parents' dog... but I lived with her for 14 years, she's mine too), since we're posting puppy pictures.

It's because he has no appendages. That's about as hilarious as a 100 year old joke gets. My dad still tells it.

"What do you call a guy with no arms or legs?"

"what?"

"Bob."

"Ho ho, that's funny. Dick."

<shrug>  Wasn't my choice.  I was like 10 when we got her.  My mom had a maltese when she was little, she wanted another one.  It's very hard to look like a badass when you're walking her.  Not saying I can't do it, it's just hard.

I had never heard that particular variant. I LOL'ed and then felt very sheltered.

Similarly, Russell was good.  But I have more and I'm sure others do.  This could become the next 'lyrics' thing.

Very well then, no more jokes. Instead, for Schild, I'll again post a picture of my both cute and manly (140 lbs.) dog Shilo.

I need to upload some more (larger) pics of him, these are three weeks old and he's growing like a weed.  We've already had to let his collar out twice and I'm afraid we'll have to do it again before the next vet visit on the 26th.  This dog has freaking moose paws too; he's going to be a huge Golden.

Bunk, your Shiloh is a cutie!  Is he a Belgian shepherd?

We don't exactly know whats in him. I know he has some Chow, as he's got a partly black tounge, and his chest is like a barrel. otherwise, we've guessed at everything from shepherd, great dane, and who knows what else. Aparently, he was supposed to be the runt of the litter, :P

He looks more German Shepherd than Belgian... we've had both.  I'm so glad we're out of the kitten thing and into the puppy thing.  I love doggies!  That Golden Retriever is ADORABLE!
