Crazy how well that picks up the dust and hairs on the window.

The dust is probably on the negatives. Wide-open, a lens that close to the window probably won't pick up even fairly large scratches and marks on the glass. I dusted the negatives before putting them in the scanner, but it's possible there was some crap on the scanner glass.

Yeah, now that you say that I went, "duh, his medium isn't digital and that all makes a lot more sense. You know this, dummy."

Amazing how quickly you forget about film as a thing anymore. I instantly went to trying to find other in-frame reasons instead, because why would anyone  have a physical print.  awesome, for real

That's pretty cool, Bunk. Makes me want to take a trip out that way.

Great shot. Cloud-dominated shots are often not nearly as great looking as they were to the person who took them, but that shot really gets across what a compelling moment that was.

Set up a trail cam in the back garden last night. Got one capture all night, a shot of the badger's bum! I've adjusted settings and position and hopefully get some better ones tonight. I've also set the correct date on the camera  awesome, for real

Getting better! I think we can say for sure now that it's the badger digging all the holes in our lawn, not squirrels.  awesome, for real

Cool pictures

So how does one deal with a badger problem other than hide inside your house?

You install kimodo dragons. They'll chase off the badger.

There really isn't much you can do, in the UK at least because they're a protected species so you can't harm, trap or interfere with them in any way. In the US you can probably just murder them. Otherwise you can give them an alternative food source than the worms and insert larvae in your lawn which might stop them digging it up. Or install an electric fence maybe? They're tenacious buggers.

We decided that we'd rather have a badger than a perfect lawn.

Was at a mediaeval festival yesterday and got some shots of the falconry display. Unfortunately I had my slow lens with me that tends to be a bit soft at length and not so great at focusing on moving targets.

They had some low passes over the crowd. This was at 18mm focal length to give you an idea of how close the bird was.

I was going through my pictures from Colorado this summer, and realized most of them are either insects, chipmunks, or cat asses. Seriously, pictures of a tiger showing her junk, kitten butt, mountain lion butt, etc.

So instead here's a baby bunny that was sitting  right next to me when I took  a rest on a rock at Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument.

Thanks.  I was super happy with it and have the uncropped version as the wallpaper on the phone I shot it with.  I'm shocked at how well it turned out, given that it's a fairly cheap phone.

Yeah, that's a beautiful shot.

Back when I started getting into photography, I was always thinking FUCK WHERE DO ALL THESE PEOPLE FIND OWLS FLYING CLOSE TO THE GROUND AND NEAR ENOUGH FOR A GOOD SHOT?

Then I realized that it was almost all people going to falconry/raptor shows and just picking an angle where they could shoot with a good fast telephoto lens to make it look like they caught a shot of a bird in the wild.

I rather prefer the shots that put the birds in their actual context.

I was in Prague a couple of weeks ago. One reason for going there was to drop my damaged DSLR off at the service centre which meant that I was completely reliant on film for the weekend. I took my Kiev 88 for medium format shots and a Spotmatic as a walkabout camera. The Spotmatic turned out to be a marvel, I managed to put 17 rolls of film through it over the four days including a lot of indoor shooting, animal photography and even some shots inside a cave.

I am so envious of you and that trail camera.  I left my rural home and joined the world of concrete jungles long before I could me or my family could ever afford such things, but I'd love to be able to do that now.

Actually, maybe I'll buy something like that for my mom, and live vicariously through her.  She lives out on the rice farm away from everything, and raccoons/coyotes are always raiding.

Also Also, I'm happy that English badgers are so different from their North American counter parts (more docile, non-aggressive).  Because those are some big ass critters.

Tell me about it. If these guys were angry American badgers we'd be building barricades or buying a lion.  awesome, for real

English badgers seem to act more the equivalent of woodchucks/groundhog/whistlepig/whatever the local is for Marmota monax around you. Cute useful burrowers who will only fuck with you if threatened.

You'd have to completely corner them to get any trouble, they are incredibly skittish. I really want to photograph them with a proper camera but it'd mean hiding in the garden for a few hours totally motionless and silent and I'm not sure if my back could handle that any more.

Wireless triggers are pretty cheap. Some cameras even let you stream live view to a smartphone or tablet and control it from there (my 70D does for example).

I've got PocketWizards, problem is I want to be able to frame and focus the shots. Plus there's nowhere I can really observe the area that the badgers cover from the house, so I might as well be outside with them. I'll give it a go next spring when it's less constantly pissing with rain  awesome, for real
