STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) -- She is a latecomer to the information superhighway, but 75-year-old Sigbritt Lothberg is now cruising the Internet with a dizzying speed.
Lothberg's 40 gigabits-per-second fiber-optic connection in Karlstad is believed to be the fastest residential uplink in the world, Karlstad city officials said.
In less than 2 seconds, Lothberg can download a full-length movie on her home computer -- many thousand times faster than most residential connections, said Hafsteinn Jonsson, head of the Karlstad city network unit.
Jonsson and Lothberg's son, Peter, worked together to install the connection.
The speed is reached using a new modulation technique that allows the sending of data between two routers placed up to 1,240 miles apart, without any transponders in between, Jonsson said.
"We wanted to show that that there are no limitations to Internet speed," he said.
Peter Lothberg, who is a networking expert, said he wanted to demonstrate the new technology while providing a computer link for his mother.
"She's a brand new Internet user," Lothberg said by phone from California, where he lives. "She didn't even have a computer before."
His mother isn't exactly making the most of her high-speed connection. She only uses it to read Web-based newspapers.

I want a link to the torrent site she uses. I could be wrong, but from how I understand it you have to kinda cap your d/l when using torrents due to you having to upload to get any speeds. Though I doubt it possible for her to find a torrent with enough seeds to garner that kind of speed, it's not impossible for her to turn what's normally an hour or two into 20-30 minutes or less.

Reading this statement made it sound like he had strung 1240 miles of line, without a transponder, between him and his mum (so she could surf 4chan ya know?) and I was going to say the whole thing is a hoax but on further inspection that's not what it says. It says the modulation allows you to transmit a data signal 1,240 miles (across a wire?) without a transponder, which sounds nice, but equally like bullshit or a mis-quote or, possibly, a meh (i.e. we send data signals to Mars without a transponder). It's not clear from this story what exactly is going on here, well, other than that this guy gave his mum a big fat pipe...

Most of the long haul transoceanic routes I was involved with used soliton based transmission equipment that allowed for multiple OC-192 (10Gbps) wavelengths down a single fiber with minimal EDFA usage. Theoretically we could have sent a one terabyte per second signal a distance of over 1000KM on a good single mode fiber.
...and that was in 2000 so I would imagine that the state of the art has improved dramatically.

Peter Löthberg is pretty famous in Sweden for being the one who took the initiative to connect SUNET to the internet in the late 80s, giving Swedish a very advantageous head start compared to a lot of our neighbors, leading to wide spread internet usage a lot faster. So everything in the article is most likely true.

It's not that the article says something not true it's that it doesn't say anything.
40 Gbs? OK, that's nice. Doesn't mean anything. Those speeds have been commercially available for a while.
Across 1,240 miles without a transponder? OK. Sure, as was pointed out twice that's been going on for a while too.
That it is somehow the modulation of the wave form that allows the feat? Eh, well that needs qualification. Across what medium? Obviously not fiber or it wouldn't be of interest. POTS? That would be cool but highly unlikely.
It's great that the guy is the Swedish equivalent of Al Gore but the article doesn't really say anything.

I'm not in to the details, but reading a separate article it seems like the point trying to be made is that everyone should be able to have a 40 gbs connection. At least here in Sweden those speeds aren't easily available for normal people.

Residential. You got a 40Gb/s connection? Know anybody else who has? It's great that the guy is the Swedish equivalent of Al Gore but the article doesn't really say anything.
Uh. The guy created a large part of OC-768. You can thank him for most of the Cisco gear that is coming out this year. Which is why he gets to have multi million dollar network equipment at home. Sure, the journalism is a fluff piece. Don't make the mistake of trying to imply that Lothberg is just some nobody that plugged in standard gear.

Yes. The article was a fucking fluff piece about a 75 year old granny with a 40Gb/s connection at home. Why did that upset you to the point of becoming a raging douche of the first water?

This article wasn't even a fluff piece. It was a shining example of everything wrong with journalism today.
1. Uninteresting topic. 2. Uninteresting people. 3. Not news. 4. Badly written, possibly attributable to the lack of information available to write a full article. 5. Full of bullshit - a movie in 2 seconds. O RLY? 6. Hurt international friendships due to it being an article about Sweden that didn't involve a super hot blond. 7. Not about Basshunter.

I should get back to nature, too. You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer. Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached. Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

See, this is why I thought it was potentially not safe for work. The photo with her about to sit down really looks like she either has yellow skin around the tattoos or that she is wearing a very tight damn near see through shirt-dress. Also, no naughty bits.
