Please :)
I've got a Motorola RAZR V3m mobile. It's not bad. I like the iPhone much better but am not going that route until other providers pick it up. So in the meantime I'm using this thing.
The problem I'm having is with the web browser. It's ok, but it doesn't seem to want to make secure connections with secure websites. For example, it won't work with the web portal of corporate email system even though other phones I've used (including the iPhone) can do so through their browsers.
I've done some digging but haven't found anything largely because I'm not even sure where to start.

I picked up a V3 a couple of weeks ago...I am still learning wtf it is capable of. I just need to make phone calls, download ring tones, and take pics. I am pretty sure I could hack into NASA with this thing.

Knowing government data security, you almost certainly could. The charging plug is just USB, so go ahead and make your own MP3s for ring tones using iTunes or whatever, set the encoding to something like 48K mono and connect it up with a USB cable to send the file.

Most, if not all, carriers lock down the ability for end users to upload songs to devices to use as ring tones.
Why should I let you do something for free if I can charge you 2-5 dollars with a cost measured in cents?

Worked fine for both of my locked RAZRs on Cingular - the one that Signe washed, and its replacement.

Ok, so it appears I cannot upload or download any data from my phone (beyond synchronizing Contacts and Calendar) without something called the Multimedia Studio. That doesn't appear as an option in my profile. On the Motorola Phone Tools Function Panel, I only get Synchronizer, Phonebook, Calendar, Text Message, and Internet Connection in the little menu, and the Synchronizer program that launches if I click any of the first three buttons only does Contacts and Calendar. The PDF manual does show Mulitmedia Studio, but I ain't gettin' it.
That could be due to Phone Tools not recognizing the V3m by default. Whenever I install it, and after I update the install, it doesn't recognize the phone. I need to tell it to see the phone as a Motorola USB Modem and then select the model from that following list. THEN it recognizes the phone enough to do some syncing, but not enough to get me to Multimedia Studio.
So, am I screwed?

Opera Mini is available to all Sprint and Cingular customers. Availability for T-Mobile customers is dependent on the subscription plan. BREW-enabled phones, including Verizon, are currently not supported.
Looking at the v3m, I'm guessing its a Verizon (or similar) BREW-enabled device. From Wikipedia: V3m
V3m is a new CDMA version of the RAZR. As an upgrade to the V3c, it features a microSD card slot for up to 2 GB of memory expansion, a longer lasting battery, and 40MB of internal memory. The V3m presently comes in silver and pink, although the original release as well as models currently available on the Sprint CDMA network featured the gunmetal gray color of the V3c. This is not available in the UK, although the V3x is on sale there. It should be noted that the V3m is artificially crippled by Verizon Wireless. Verizon has disabled the ability to transfer data files to and from the phone via Bluetooth (a specific protocol called OBEX). Verizon has also blocked the transfer of most data over USB, such as ringtones. These phones also run Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless (BREW), which signs each application to the phones Electronic Serial Number, or ESN, thus preventing the use of free applications. The equivalent models offered by competitors (such as the V3t by T-Mobile) are not crippled in this manner. Verizon also installs their own user interface instead of the default Motorola interface. This has led to many Verizon Wireless users to resort to using their own artificial means of reverting their phones back to an original Motorola condition, or to that of a Verizon phone that has some of the disabled features enabled
Time to void that warranty and install an unlocked Motorola interface.

Yeah the V3m is garbage. What I really wanted was a KRZR, the razr's big brother with a 2.0mp camera -- but then I'm seeing the new RAZR 2 and damn is it sexy... linux, 2.0mp camera, touchscreen, 45m of built-in storage with a 2gb expansion card... it's like an iPhone for people who want customizability. The newer V3m firmwares are really hard to flash and edit, people brick their phones pretty easily; verizon has done a damned good job of making it really tough for you to fuck with it.

Looks like you have a Verizon V3m or another company that locks it down like verizon does. http://www.hacktherazr.com/There are guides on that site to unlocking the full functionality of the phone. I've done ot with my Verizon phone. It WILL void your warranty. Follow the introductory guide to installing all of the correct Motorola drivers, Motorola PST Phone programmer, and P2K seem editor. Follow the guide to performing the seem edit that will unlock the multimedia studio in Motorola phone tools (it basically changes the string the phone sends to phone tools to V3mM instead of V3m - telling phone tools its ok to allow Multimedia studio to work) Its pretty clearly explained on the site, I didn't have any trouble figuring it out with a bit of trial and error. You do need to be using XP and not XP64 for it to work though, the motorola drivers don't work under XP64. I had to set up my laptop to do it. I've set up several of the other things they describe on that site, including modifying my phone's menu background, and enabling my laptop to use the phone as a data modem for internet access. General disclaimer, although I said above its not hard. This WILL void your warranty, and if you fuck it up, you may brick your phone. I disclaim all responsibility for any screwup on your part that costs you time, aggravation or money.

Be very careful to read completely if you follow that route, I will say it again just so you see -- especially read the part about flipping bits on the new versions of the firmware and how it bricks your phone.

Thanks all. I got the phone from Sprint, but it does appear to be locked down in much the way described above.
I won't be taking any actions against this limitation. I'll tinker with PCs all day long, but breaking a cellphone would require I spent money on buying a new one. And I'd rather not just to access one place from which I get email (all my other email accounts work fine).
I appreciate the insights and legwork all!

Hmm.. My coworker has a V3m from sprint, and he didn't have to do any seem editing to make multimedia studio in phone tools work. Try fooling with the phone recognition in phone tools, maybe if you get the right one, it will work correctly. Also you could try the motorola driver pack from the site I linked.. maybe getting the phine and PC talking right from the PC end will be enough.
