No.

For shame at the lack of Shining Force 1 or Phantasy Star 4. Well, Shining Force 2 was better than 1, but still.

Also, no SegaCD.

My collection of SegaCD games is underwhelming outside of PANIC and Snatcher. I wish I had Lunar 1/2 and Popful Mail.

The Thunder Force series is really cool too ignoring how stupidly hard they are.

And Gunstar Heroes, which out Contras Contra in every way shape and form.

The music in Thunder Force is awesome. The series is, as you said, awesomely hard.

Really, my heart is with Strider on that list. Strider is simply one of my favorite characters and games ever.

Awesome, i am glad people looked into this.
as i stated earlier there are some games that are not on the list but i do have some fluff to take care of.

Best game on there is comixzone and he knows it.
No.

I am trying to not define the system with 2 titles, and if i did, it certainly wouldn't be with those. I think that both shining force and PS4 are good, but like you stated, shining force 2o IS better and PS4 is easy to find. I  am taking care of a majority of stuff that i played and enjoyed, and random stuff i run in to, then getting all the fluff last. the genesis was not really a rpg haven., as such there was not a great deal of great rpgs on the system, although the ones that were there are pretty damn good. and my sega cd collection is pretty decent, like i said. from what i remember i have like 2 copies of snatcher, popful mail and all kinds of silly fun stuff, but i kinda want to focus on the megadrive stuff at this point.

also on the gunstar heroes thing, i agree, gunstar is crazy good. although contra hardcorps alone outcontras contra at any time as well. When it came to straight up arcade action the genesis freaking had it in spades. i honestly don't think the SNES had crap on the platformer/beat'em'up/shooter/arcade port barage that is the genesis collection. I mean if you look at a solid snes collection and subract the square stuff and enix stuff, you are left with a bunch of random fluff, and i really think that the SNES collection was made by the rpgs released on the system. on the other hand the genesis had a BUNCH of crap to play. it really is silly.

yeah thunderforce games are freaking crazy. they are really damn good. it is funny to see TF3 and thunder spirits side by side. the MD version just eats the snes version right the fuck up. then there is lightening force, undeadline, musha, taskforce harrier ex, insector x, steel empire, gaires, segaia, man the genesis ate the SNES up with the shooters. they were all over the place on the MD.

SCHILD: man you hit some sweet fucking spots there baby. i have me some hots ofr the strider AND comixzone. strider was just TOO damn good of a port. seriously. that is a good port man. that game was too hot. and comixzone was way ahead of its time. so damn stylish and good looking and it played so well too.

i just got some extra games i will put on the list here in the next couple of days, like 30 or so games. it sucks cause some of them are just freaking good. like i think i could strip down this collection to just the solid good stuff and still have to have at least 80 or 90 games. i want to keep all these suckas though.

anyway, just in case anyone thinks i have some snes hate, it is not that, i just think that the snes was really overplayed in the states. and it got too much credit, there really was a lot of fun stuff on the MD that just didn't get the attention it deserved. i stand by this, way more people should have played landstalker damnit. too much good stuff like this was missed.

LandStalker was good, my friend still sometimes does the funny walk animation in real life just for kicks.

Shooters on the MD were good overall, SNES slowdown issues really hurt it there, and the best shooter series (Parodius) never made it to the US. The TG-16 also had some great shooters, in particular Lords/Gates of Thunder. The SegaCD also had a really good shooter, I forget what it was called, it was sort of a steampunk Japanese theme. (Vertical scroller) It didn't do anything amazing but it was just a really fun game.

I do however have to say that Contra III for the SNES is the best Contra-style game, hands down.

I think the MD kind of got pegged as the sports system, with better versions of Madden and also games like Joe Montana football.

I only have a few Genesis games, but I'll blather about one I really liked.  Greatest Heavyweights was easily the best boxing game of the 16-bit era.  In terms of mechanics it was very similar to a lot of side-view boxing games of that era (like the Bowe, Holyfield, and Chavez licensed games) but it was the most evolved of the bunch.

There were three possible bodies of different height and build a fighter could have, which made a huge impact, and a variety of noticably different AI scripts for the opponents.  An AI Muhammad Ali fought in a completely different way than an AI Rocky Marciano, and if you got really good with Larry Holmes, you'd need a new strategy if you started playing as Joe Frazier.  It's the kind of thing you'd take for granted just a few years later when the PS1 came along and EA put out Knockout Kings, but it was way ahead of it's contemporaries, most of which had fighters that were all just clones with different faces.

It was just a really competent piece of work.  Given the era in which it was made, I don't think it could have been done much better.

Yup...the '020 was the first 'true' 32-bit 68xxx CPU. I think the Amiga's custom chips were all 16-bit as well.

Mrhat: are you talking about devils crush? that game was a technosoft port, it was really good on the MD, much better than the TB16 version.

SCHILD: be careful there man, the genesis can stand tit for tat with most of those chump sauce.
and you are the first person to say that the alladin on the snes was better than the MD version, that is just silly. pilot wings and starfox i will give ya, don't mess with the genesis on sidescrollers though man. as good as metroid is you put that against pulseman, ristar, shinobi 3, vector man 1 and 2, alien soldier, STRIDER, rolling thunder 2,3, splatter house 2, 3. there are too many good side scrolling ation games on the MD. Like i mentioned before, the SNES really rests on it's big titles and it's rpgs. oh and don't pull the populus card cause i will have to play my vastly superior tyrants, general chaos, immortal, star flight, star control herzog zwei cards. sega punched face with the strat and sim stuff. strat rts STARTED on the genesis. BUT i have to say, sim city  WAS on the snes so i will give them that one. that game was crack.  blackthorne was poopy compared to flashback which was better on the genesis anyway. and as far as the castlevania goes. yeah, i didnt think that the snes castlevania was all that great. bloodlines on the other hand was shit hot. and all those megaman games aint got nothing on the sonic games, say what you want but the sonic games are still good to this day. sonic 2,3, and sonic and knuckles were too damn good.  i think that your school yard brawl would get ugly.....

but no really i like the snes, but i got a man. (what's yo man gotta do wit me?!?!) i just think that i enjoy the selection on the genesis more than that on the snes. but there was a fair share of great snes games. i just hate how much poop was on the system too.

alas, zombies ate my neighbors WAS better on the snes.

TRIPPY: turns out i DO have herzog, list updated. that game is too fucking hot. even now.

man i am missing my championship pro-am game!!! grrrrrr that game was freaking great!

Yeah I agree with the Mutant League Football. That game was too fun. I actually though that Mutant League Hockey was pretty decent too. I had no idea that both those games are apparently tough to find now. Luckily the Genesis collection is a lot nicer on the wallet than most other old games. I don't often see most Genesis games go for too much on the Ebay.

Strat rts didn't start on the Genesis in terms of consoles, it started on the TG-16 I think with Military Madness.

Also, I wanna add another omission to that list: The Killing Game Show.

Well if you want to get technical it started with Herzog by Technosoft on the MSX. (This was in 1988) Nectaris (Military Madness) was in '89, which was the same year Herzog Zwei was released. Herzog Zwei is more important because it was RTS successfully executed. The Original Herzog was pretty poopy.   Herzog Zwei was a better game than Military Madness in my opinion because it was bringing something new to the table in its execution and gameplay. It  was very balanced and almost all RTS developers credit Zwei as the grandpappy of RTS. This is really not an issue because as I am sure you are aware, Nectaris is a turn based strategy game.  tongue

Are you saying that the Killing Game Show is not on the list, or that it sucks? Cause I like that game, and I have like 2 or 3 copies for the MD In the states it is called Fatal Rewind.

I still have a Genesis and a few other old consoles, but since we're moving into a new house, my wife is trying to get me to get rid of them...WTF?

A few of my faves:

Golden Axe
Original Sonic Teh Hedgehog
Mutant League Football
and THE greatest sports game of all-time: NHL 95 -- if you knew the angle to take on the goalie, you could score at will. God that game was fun.

And my sister liked to play Tetris a lot... :-D

Trotski: Yeah, Golden Axe is some great fun. I was always lucky enough to have a second person to play that game with so it never got boring. I do have to say that the sports games on the Genesis were pretty darn fun at the time. The Genesis was really packed full of sports options. I was really into the World Series Baseball stuff. Those games played so freaking well and they looked really nice too. All that Mutant League stuff makes me wish they had made more games for that franchise. I would have been all about a Mutant League Soccer, Mutant League Baseball...Hell I would have killed for Mutant League All Pro Wrestling.. The options are endless. Everyone here knows that if it were available, they would have played Mutant League Bowling in a second.   In love

Phantasy Star 2 and 4
Thunderforce 3
Shining Force 1 and 2
Ghouls 'N Ghosts
Strider
Shinobi

That there is a solid list of favorite games. Man I freaking loved Ghouls 'N Ghosts. While we were playing arcade perfect G'nG, SNES foolios were stuck with that slopfest Super Ghosts N' Goblins. Man that game is freaking unplayable with all that slowdown. RanDumb.
Did you play Revenge of Shinobi or Shinobi 3? Both were really freaking good, but Shinobi 3 was a powerhouse. That game is goddamn amazing. I don't know if you played any ShadowDancer, which is considered part of the Shinobi series. That game was really fun too. Seriously, the Genesis had way too many good games.

I can still remember bringing home G'nG the same day I brought home my Genesis.  It was glorious.  I played it regularly for years, literally.  Before I put my Genesis away I could beat it with one continue playing through twice for the 'real' ending.

I played Revenge of Shinobi, Shinobi 3, and Shadowdancer :)  I agree on Shinobi 3, to this day it remains one of my favorite side scrollers right behind the original arcade version of Shinobi.  Shadowdancer was also a favorite of mine as it was most like the arcade version which I loved so much.  BTW, the Sega Genesis collection which was released for ps2 actually contains Shadowdancer and Shinobi 3.  They look fucking great in 480p!

Ooh also... my first import was a MegaDrive game.  I imported Strider almost a year before it was released stateside.  Modding a Genesis to play imports consisted of shaving the square cart slot into an oval cart slot so MegaDrive games would fit.

Yeah, those model 1 Genesis systems were awesome cause they really had no lockout internally and the tab mod was really easy. Otherwise people need to take the GameGenie pass-through method.

My Genesis games... LET ME SHOW YOU THEM!

I'm upset at the lack of Warsong/Langrisser from all you people who liked Shining Force.  Warsong was probably my 2nd favorite game on the system after the Shining games.
