Just got off the CoH test server, trying out some new stuff in Issue #2.

Capes: Expensive, didn't get to try one on myself (~100k inf, and it don't copy over). However, I saw plenty on others - and, well, damn.

Auras: The absolute coolest piece of fluff I have ever seen in a game, bar none. I copied my level 35 Storm defender over there, and I gave him a blue full-body vaporous aura. He looked like he had this blue-ish fog dripping off his entire costume, and when I turned on fly, it trailed behind me. I looked like a freakin' comet, it was great.

Hollows (zone): Very cool looking. Level 5-10ish content, I flew over it, looks VERY good. Art team outdid themselves.

As for the Shadow shard, I didn't get to that yet, but I saw some screenshots, and it looked like the art team had some MAJOR fun. I have to give props for some of the best art I've ever seen in an MMO. Only other game that comes close is DAOC:TOA, and that's only in a certain few moments; CoH can get you that "this is fucking awesome" feeling a lot more often.

This is a humorous signature.

Must...Resist.

Actually, I'm probably just better off waiting a year or so until I resub. Maybe when CoV is released. The game should kick much ass by then.

My problem is I can't concentrate on any one player long enough to level him.  I have too many low teens bozos and they are all too fun to play to let them sit.  So I bounce around all my characters and my main is only like level 19 or so.

BAH.  Must level someone up to the point where he can see the cool higher end content, but having too much fun with alts to concentrate.  And I like playing my alts paired up with my wife who plays very limited hours in CoH.  *whimper*

At least you get her to play.  If mine would play games like CoH with me, I'd probably put in 3x the time I do now.  Oh...wait, nevermind.

Yes... the reason is that CoH was the first to bring a high standard of "FUN" to the mmog genre.

I played the game for a month and left because that type of fun doesn't appeal to me.  Though that is the case, I can still clearly see that CoH created a fast-paced vehicle where a number of people can multiplay in a very engaging environment.  Of course, creating one of the best mmog combat systems to date and following through on their commitment to maintaining a high standard doesn't hurt either.

My main character is now up to 41.  The nice thing about levelling a main up is that you learn the tricks of levelling up other characters quickly.  I have 3 other alts that are all over 20 because I'm able to twink their enhancements, and I've kind of learned how to game the system.

But don't feel alone.  The biggest problem I have as an SG leader is that most of my members flip around between alts and are stuck in permalowbie land.  No big deal, but I wish they'd stick with a character, because a character in their twenties and below is far, far different from a character in their 30's and 40's.

Hey Big Gulp, which server are you playing on?  I hear some rumors about tanks and how it might get fixed, but after having leveled 5 tanks to 14, I'm thinking of going for the gusto and actually concentrating on one character :D

I'm on Freedom.  If you want to join us just put Captain Pansy, Longarm, Doc Chernobyl, Think Tank or Mech Mantis (heh, I know, but I've gotta have different level alts to play with the guys) on your friends list and I'll give ya an invite.

OK, can you high-level folks answer this for me?

The highest I ever got in CoH was level 15. While I loved Toxic Druid, my spine-encrusted scrapper (easily the coolest-looking character I was able to craft), I finished a series and quests and asked myself, "Is grinding these same 3 or 4 quests over and over again all I have to look forward to here?" Fearing the answer was "yes", I quit.

So ... those of you in your 30s and 40s, I ask you ... was I right?

(ETA: If I remember correctly, ol' TD is hibernating on Freedom, along with my defender, named Onomatopeia.)

Um, never mind.

Is camping the same monster group for lootz all I have to look forward to?  Is going through multiple careers in order to maybe get to jedi all I have to look forward to?  Is attacking and defending the same checkpoint in an inconsequential war all I have to look forward to?

It's the nature of the beast in this genre.  If you can't dig that then this isn't your type of game.  That said, the missions do get more intricate post 40.  Alternate dimensions where the Nazis won the war, ruined cities populated by ghosts where your alternate self destroyed the world...  But in a nutshell, yeah, it's the same stuff.

Here's my impressions about the "same old, same old" thought in CoH (from a level 35 Storm/Radiation Defender)

Yeah, the missions are the same. But the WAY you do them, and WHAT you're doing, are very different. At higher levels, fights get much more interesting, because your enemies have more powers - and so do you. There's a lot more in the way of tactics when you get a group of 5/6+ people hitting a large group with a boss or two in it, especially when we're talking Malta, Carnival, or Praetorians.

In terms of WHAT you're doing, that changes a lot, too. Missions DO get fun variations on them, and in Issue #2, missions will have a much higher reward. From what I gathered on the test server, mission rewards were more than doubled, almost tripled (yes, that's XP AND influence).

There are altoholics in the game, yeah, but I'd encourage against it. Create one character and stick with it, at higher levels, it's definitely worth it.

This is a humorous signature.

Actually, the new indoor missions are employing a variety of tricks. From the simple things (sliding warehouse doors and "airlocks" in the tech labs that you need to open) to the environmental touches (pentagrams in Hellion lairs, speakers blasting Nazi propoganda in 5th Column-infested warehouses) to the terrain that affects your combat (superadine labs that hyper-regen your endurance from the fumes, until you blow 'em up real good, and Outcast lairs that are part scorch marks and still-burning flames and partly frozen over so you slide on the ice), to actual variant mission objectives (protect X thing from enemy attack - it puts out a taunt radius when you agg the creatures next to it and suddenly the entire mission descends to blow it up, or take down various device parts at the same time - and yeah, they warn you about this before you take the mission so you know it needs a team), a lot has changed.

If you just wanna race around Paragon City, there are badges and plaques detailing the city's history tucked in out-of-the-way places in various zones.

It seriously feels like they've just put out a new 'sequel' to the game, there's so much _more_.

Rock on, I actually have some time to play again, so I rolled up a scrapper named Brak SharpSkin.  I'll keep an eye out for ya all in game.

The missions are getting more upgrades to make them more intresting. The first series were in the lab/nazi/and cot dungeons.

The second release adds more and more stuff to missions across the board and they are looking to add to this diversity.  The mission system they have at release is their bare bones base line capability. Expect them to expand on this ALOT in the future.

They also have added quite a few zone/instance types with more on the way with the second patch. The first patch stuff was mainly to flesh out the higher level game as expected. The second patch adds in stuff for a wide range such as a new low level zone for levels 5 to 15, new troll mission sets and high level shadowshard.

I can see myself keeping coh as my go to need some fast action game for a long time. It plays much more like a console game and it is actually fun to play even if you only have an hour or two. I still am looking forward to something like eq2 or wow to fill in my main game fix though.

Been playing the stress test in WoW and I am pretty impressed by what they did and they will deffinatly have a fun game there. I am not sure how eq2 and wow compare head to head so I likely will have to play both and find out.

I have found out though having a rogue, mage and paladin as your group leaves the paladin frustrated as it is nearly impossible for them to maintain agro.
