I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Hey, I still log into Swarm sim regularly both here at work and at home.  It's more of an exercise is clicking a few buttons in the morning or whenever and then going away again. |

I never really stopped "playing" the kittens game.  I think the only achievement I have left is reaching year 40k, which luckily doesn't require a lot of work on my part.     |

A Dark Room is great (more than a couple of years old I think) and yes there is an end.  I think last time I played it, it took me about a day of real time (not a day of play time) to finish. |

Tuned in, immediately get to watch cringey Ubisoft talking head offering her deepest sympathies to the families impacted by the Orlando shooting while flanked by a man in a giraffe suit and some sort of "horrifically garish neon costumes through the ages" exhibit or something.  We need to stop this fucking planet right now and sort some shit out. -Kail | | |

I think the US and Japanese models (Japan especially) are the most interesting. Top-down but egalitarian and extremely hierarchical and extremely consensual both seem really interesting in terms of contrasting management styles and attitudes. Definitely something to look at, thanks! |

I don't get what these words mean in this context.
Consensual meaning you're happy with the system and top-down meaning you feel they're imposed upon you?

What it seems to be is the X axis is the attitude demonstrated in the workplace and how employees and managers feel about their relationship. The Y axis is the management style in practice. So according to that graph in American workplaces there is a feeling that everyone is fairly equal, managers try to be approachable and deal with people on an equal level but in practice decisions are made at the top and orders are sent down. The Japanese contrast is a company where there's a strict hierarchy and people are in their place on the totem pole (so subordinates being deferential to managers, etc.) but when it comes to decision making and implementation they involve everyone and avoid imposing directives.
Those two are the most interesting because there seems to be a huge contrast in the attitude towards management and how management actually works. The top right corner are places where the boss is king and they tell you what to do. The bottom left is where people are treated more equally and involved in the decision making process. Japan is where the boss is king but they'll ask you if they should be doing this or that, while in the US the boss is treated as an equal but they'll dictate what's happening.

Edit: Ok I actually read the article and it's a little clearer. The X axis is attitude towards authority, I guess more broadly the management culture from flat structures to firm hierarchies. The Y axis is how decisions are reached from being vested in a single boss to coming out of consensual agreement among everyone. They make the useful distinction that the top-down decisions tend to be faster and more initially decisive but less fixed where consensual decision making takes longer but generally produces firm commitments.
