I called Nintendo once.
It was to tell them that the difficulty curve on Blaster Master made no sense.
I think I was 10 years old. I'm sure they were shocked.

I bet you were one of the little bastards that used to call me 50x a day at Nintendo, aren't you? Stupid toll free line... Thank you for helping me through that tough part in Shadowrun. I just.. didn't know where to go. First mag subscription for me was Nintendo Power. It used to kick all kinds of ass. The best was when they used to have high score competition stuff. My bother won a gold controller for his work in Mario Cart. :-D

Hehe, that stuff will never work now in the days of photoshop. Kind of sad in a way.

Gamepro is still in business? Wow... Just WOW. Anyhoo, I always thought they were crappy. Diehard Gamefan/EGM/EGM-squared were far superior. (Especially Gamefan. Damn, I miss that rag.)

Hardcore Gamer Magazine? Seriously? lol
Anyway, I also had a sub to Nintendo Power for....who knows how long. I had to finally throw out the stacks I had when I moved last year. I even had them organized in such a way so that the comic chapters in each issue were in order (for stuff like Zelda, etc). But I never really cared about the postcard contests, or high score crap.
Hell, I'm probably closer to the anti-Schild than WUA, though I'm not sure that's a desirable title to have...

Dude. Hardcore Gamer magazine is the last magazine written TRULY for the love of the game. It's written by the people at Double Jump (who makes, BY FAR, the best strat guides on the market), and helps keep them afloat.

I believe my first magazine subscription was Nintendo Power. If I remember right ,the main reason I subscribed was because I got a free copy of Dragon Warrior for NES. I loved Dragon Warrior. Fighting red hershey kisses outside the first town with my bamboo stick.

I had a subscription to Game Players->Ultra Game Players for years until they canned the mag. It was pretty good for a game rag. GamePro has NEVER been good.
GameFAN was a pretty magazine (better quality paper) and had a lot of screenshots/content, but the reviewers were the biggest fanboys ever. Not the regular "lol halo rox" kind of fanboys, but the kind of people who wept openly at the demise of the Dreamcast and considered Mario 64 the pinnacle of the "art". Game snobs basically.
Is "Play" magazine still around? IIRC it was laid out real artsy with huge screenshots and awful anime/game reviews.

Wasn't GameFan the one done by that store in LA? No bias there.
Play is still around.

The best game mag was Videogames & Computer Entertainment.
Sadly, everyone read EGM with its microscopic review blurbs, number scores, and HAY LOOK AT ALL THE JAPANESE GAMES YOU WON'T EVER GET TO PLAY LEGALLY. EVER bullshit and it tried playing catchup and turned into an EGM clone. Which like EGM itself, sucked.
Luckily Next Generation took over a for a while.
These days I only read Retro Gamer out of the UK. A little too much Spectrum coverage, and not enough C64 action, but it beats the NES/SNES fellatio of US retrogame stuff...

Super Play and Mega were where it was at. Later came EDGE, and a bit later, Next Generation.
EGM was always trash.
