Atari is now accepting applications for the beta test of Sid Meiers Pirates - interested people can sign up here. The product code is AVAST. ...[snip]...[snip]... Sid Meier’s Pirates will be released by Atari on November 16th 2004 ...[snip]... .

Screen shots over here.

I never played the original (to much time spent playing Red Storm Rising I guess) but I have been playing Pirate Hunter recently.

Really looking forward to this, the amount of time I've spent with the original Pirates! and Pirates! Gold is epic.

Wiiiiii!

You've really missed out having never played the original.  Some of my best gaming memories have been from playing the original Pirates! back on the old Apple ][ when I was a kid.  Good times.  I can't wait for the new one.

Same one as the Nintendo version, right? If so, it's gotta be one of my top 10 favorite games of all time.

Atari was showing this at GenCon. Has some issues with the 3d engine and point of view, but overall it's pretty fun.

Heh- between Red Storm Rising and Pirates!, I logged A LOT of hours sailing the seas in my youth. Screen shots look cool, but I really hate the scale of the ships in comparison to the land features. Nothing I can't get over...it just looks goofy.

Wow, can you say Hellz Yeah! Heaving bosoms, clashing sabers and booming cannons. That looks mighty spiffy.

My big concern is that I'm worried the gameplay of Pirates! hasn't been enhanced enough.  If it's just a respin of the previous version with better graphics, then I'm sure it will be fun, but it won't make me stick to it very long.

I am torn. I agree that a strict remake with little to no new gameplay would have a limited lifespan. OTOH, if they get too far away from the original formula, there is a good chance they will fuck it up.

Limited?  Shit, I spent years on the first one.

Exactly the point.  I've PLAYED that game, and pretty much "beat" it to death.  I spent years playing Adventure, too, but I don't play it anymore.  Ditto M.U.L.E., etc.  If I wanted to play Pirates! again, I don't need fancy graphics; I'd just play the old version... which, in fact, I have, from time to time, but not in a couple of years now.

So if the new Pirates! is exactly the same gameplay as the old, it won't hold my interest for very long.  If it has just enough to make it new and different, then I could wind up playing it for a long time.

My young foreign bones have never played it.

So, based off your (pl.) reviews, I'm gonna be picking this up and enjoying it immensly.
