Damn kids, get off my lawn!

OK in my opinion, we need a hardware topic. Any way I bought a 28" LCD TV as a monitor just after I bought a 17" LCD monitor. I am running 2 computers, the 17" on one the 28" on the other. The 28" is running 1280 X 720 and as far as movies and TV shows go, it a beautiful thing. but as a computer monitor the resolution is to low. The stupid 17" blows me away with its clarity. So, anyway I need to buy a dvd /cd reader and as I speak I have a  Acer AL2051W Black/Silver 20" 8ms DVI Widescreen LCD in the shopping cart as a replacement for the 28". Am I nuts? The TV is a no name. I haven't found a review of yet. I am a newbie in this strange world of LCD's and I cannot make my xbox 360 play nice with my 28" TV. Any and all comments are welcome.

I started with nothing, and I still have most of it

Meh.

That should clear things up right quick.

I was at one point looking at getting either an inexpensive 28" or 32" LCD tv for really big monitor-ness, but it turned out that 1280x720 is a common problem with them - they look great as TVs but as monitors once you blow the screen up that big, the icons in that resolution look like a tonka toy. Not an especially helpful reply, I know, but your problem with it seems to come around every so often.

I had my computer on a top end Hi-Def 1080p TV for a while.  Looks great at 1920x1080 and crap at anything below that (fuzzy images, off screen edges or not using the whole screen, etc...), almost impossible to push that many pixels out at high-quality in modern games anything less than 1500 dollars worth of video hardware in an SLI rig though so instead of that I bought a good 22" LCD monitor.  Plus I was never comfortable playing PC games with a mouse and keyboard from my couch, coffee tables and such just don't cut it.

Computer desk, computer chair and a monitor are the way to go for comfort and usability.  Hey!  There is a concept.  Specialized equipment that is more functional than general purpose stuff...

Couldn't be happier with it.

Thanks for the link. My current 17" is a ViewSonic and I am more than happy with it. I will give it a shot.

720 is probably going to be tonka text at big screen sizes if you want it on the desktop. In the living room, it's splendid. The way to play on the sofa is to rest the keyboard on your lap and set up the mouse next to you, I use a pillow and a hardcover book (laser mouse don't need no pad!). Don't try to use the coffee table! Even a dinner tray (like a breakfast in bed style, not a folding table style) would be better than the coffee table. The coffee table is where the feet go when you recline back.

I sit at a desk most of the day, the last thing I want to do is sit at a desk at home!

My old living room setup included velcroing an old copy of the Dungeoneer's Survival Guide to the arm of a big puffy easy chair with fuzzy fabric. That for the mouse and the wireless keyboard in the lap was great.

I tried this.  I've been using computers for most of my life and I have never had a bout with carpal tunnel, I can only suppose that this is because I am very conscious of when my arms and wrists are at odd, uncomfortable or unsupported angles.  I found myself trying to adjust to relieve strain so often that along with the image issues I noted above I went back to the 'standard' set up that had served me well for 20+ years..

The coffee table reference was actually to me sitting on the floor, back against the couch and coffee table for a desk.  It was 'do-able' but not entirely comfortable.

Nah, the 61" 1080P is relegated to console gaming duties for now.

I've never had carpal tunnel and I never worry about ergonomics  tongue

But it is a point about the advantages a 720p monitor still holds. An 8800gtx can cook most graphics with everything cranked up pretty nicely at that rez.

I'm using this LG monitor and absolutely love it.  It's the perfect size for me, and has an awesome picture.  Running an xBox360 through it, with no problems.  For the price, I think it's unbeatable.

So, I come home with Forza2 motorsport and my new 22" widescreen monitor is waiting for me by the door. Plug it it and it is everything I could have wanted. So I put my new shiny DVD in my xbox360 and I get Fornza2 motorsport in 480p and black and white. No shit, black and white. It is beginning to dawn on me that just because the manufacture put a bunch of fancy ports on the back of a TV does not mean they put in the electronics in to support them. I also have, unused, a 20" westinghouse LCD TV. I swap the 2 out and now the xbox360 is 480p in color. So, honered and learned scholars of all things electronic. My next question is. Can you recommend a display device to connect to an xbox360? Or would the shiner new improved 360 solve all of the worlds problems? This stupid driving game is gonna make me want to make this consul shine and I also have gears of war. And the lack of display resolution is probally keeping me from enjoying that as well. To put this in short form. I bought a 28" widescreen TV for my new shiny computer and xbox 360. I replaced it for the computer with a 22" wide screen Viewsonic monitor only to find out it is trash as a video device for the 360 as well.

Thread merged.  I think this is more of a display inquiry rather than a FORNZA question.  I could be wrong though.  I took a left at Albuquerque.

If you want a monitor for the Xbox 360 get any that supports component inputs or if you have the elite HDMI inputs.

 I use a 3yr old HP 23" wide screen LDC that has a native 1920 X 1200 resolution.

Something like this with HDMI  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824014133

Or like this:   http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8267724&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat104900050013&id=1170290207389

Also when I moved my XBOX from the TV to my Monitor, then XBOX went back to 480p output,  I had to reset it to 1080p again manually. Not sure if that is your issue or not.
