Sure, I'll play.

Here's my desk, which is on the left side of my "gaming area" (living room). The white box on the left side is Corn, it stores my new anime and any other files I need. The black box on the right is Zod, which is my aging gaming rig. DS under the monitor. Three different notepads scattered around, cuz I'm a freak. :)

Pulling back and turning slightly to the right shows my TV, Cronos, with attached PS2. Framed Darwinia art, cuz I'm a nerd. :)

Turning farther right is my shelf o' gaming with RPG books, board games, Calvin & Hobbes collection, DVDs and game boxes. PS2 in the foreground on the left with stack of PS2 games that need to get played at some point.

Turning around, my sofa and another shelf. Raph's book is just barely visible on the end, peeking out from behind Ted Castronova's book, Lee Sheldon's book and the history of Monopoly. Also, lots of other books that don't involve games.

EDIT: No sheets on your bed, Straz?

I do have fitted sheets for the bed, but they always seem to be half-ripped off the bed when I wake up in the morning, so I don't even waste my time anymore.

Here's the TV center w/ ghetto XBox, PS2, and Wii, speakers hidden behind.  Still waiting to finish my basement.

And here's the computer stuff, 2 pc's: ghetto grey one that you can barely see and the ghetto shuttle on the right.  Bottom keyboard is for gaming because the G15 LCD doesn't quite fit on the pull out board.

So far, I have the smallest office/gaming room/network center of all of you. It is literally a converted closet, 4' x 8'. The "desk" is nothing more than one section of a system I bought at Staples 9 years ago that has been too modular to throw out. Every time I think I need to cut a piece down, or toss the whole thing, it just magically works. This room abuts my kids' room, so note the lack of speakers, and the presence of the earbuds (this is my fifth pair... they keep breaking). And befitting a father of two preschoolers, note the floor courtesy of Toys R Us.

I read some consumer insight thing awhile back that talks about a man's need for a "man cave" in their house, a place of solitude for reflection or some shit. I've certainly nailed the cave part. Miraculously, both my old Athlon XP 2000 (on the floor) and new C2D e6600, cable modem, wi-fi/landline router, monitor, that MIDI Keyboard, and that external drive all operate on one power strip on one outlet, on the same circuit as two air conditioners. I'd probably tip the scale if I put back the second monitor, but as you can see, I ain't gots the room for it. So happy that monitor supports multiple inputs. Glad I don't live in brown-out country :)

Yoru, what do you think of those headphones? I've been thinking about a good pair with a mic on them.

I hate tilted keyboards, too.  Tthey keyboards make my wrists hurt.  So do those gel pads that people put in front.

Funny, I hate the gel pads too - but I do use them to rest my elbows on (I do as much reading as typing these days).

You are a man of many shoes.

I only have three pairs... everyday pair, worn-once-a-season dress pair and a ratty old pair for when I'm doing stuff outdoors that's gonna involve a lot of mud.

Yoru, what do you think of those headphones? I've been thinking about a good pair with a mic on them.

Those are Altec Lansing 'phones, I forget the model number. They work great for TS and shooters. The mic arm is bendable as well as having a pivot on the side, which I very much like. However, the ear cups are a wee bit small, so my ears get pressed into my head and can start to hurt if I leave them on for multiple hours.

If you don't mind having the mic detached and affixable to a surface/clothing via an alligator clip, I strongly recommend the Icemat Siberia headphones. I have them at the office and they're amazing. Best sound I've heard out of headphones, ever, and they're super SUPER comfortable, even for long-term wear. Schild has some too, I'm sure he could post a pic.

Heh. Desks = Dirty, Gaming Areas (console/TV) = Clean.

Surely this is an outstanding day for console gamers everywhere.

I wanna see the "play" area of someone who doesn't play computer games.

Technically, my desk area IS my game area.

Well, except if I am playing Xbox, which I keep down in the basement. That area is usually clean, though that's mostly because no one is ever down there.

Here's mine.  Yes, that's a can of Skoal.  Despite an MBA, I'm still a redneck at heart.  Ignore the flat screen wall mount.  It's coming down as soon as we pick a color to pain the room.  I'd rather see it than 4 holes in the wall where the screws went and I patched it with spackle.  The mess of wires drives me fookin crazy, but everytime I ziptie them together or even remotely organize them, something breaks.  Or I rearrange.  Or something.   I'm really not THAT anal *twitch*

And it's always this clean.

I'll post some pics later. We have pretty much the same Ikea entertainment center as schild, but ours has cabinet doors on the sides and shelves in the middle. Since we have hardwoods, we keep our Wii and PS2 on the floor, but the vintage consoles are all in the cabinets of the entertainment center.

Console areas are inhabited by wives and toddlers, and occasionally visitors.  My office is MINE.
Expanse behind me as I sit at the Work Desk.
Tool closet from background of the previous shot, featuring Mystery Door.
PC software closet, which cannot be opened fully due to clutter.

I have a clear path to my rig, and that's about it.

schild likes ikea, I see -- mine will be up soon.

Of course. Who doesn't? That shit has clean lines and can take a beating.

Like a supermodel. HO HO WICKED BURN.

Your fucking insane.  Ikea falls apart and breaks at the drop of a hat.  It looks nice, and is cheep, but I find you really get what you pay for with them.  Their shit most certainly cannot take any sort of beating.

Found this at Amazon. They look like the right ones, seem pretty nice. If so, just one question, err, two actually: 1) does surround sound in the traditional sense work on headphones; and, 2) would it work on these?

Icemat's are good. As for surround sound, eh, if you get the included USB soundcard, it mimics 7.1 just fine. Creepy fine in fact. It's funny, at the upper end of audio gear, Icemat's are reviled. But for gaming - if that's most of what you'll be doing (along with the odd mp3), they're fantastic.

I used to buy that "upper end" range of audio gear. 15 years later I'm still wishing I dumped that cash into computers instead. I wasn't having much luck with the fairer gender anyway :)

These I think will do well then. I like that they're comfortable. Years of earbuds... ugh. And I'd like to have even that mimic'd surround.

And lol Yegolev.

Oh the icemat ear plugs are the most comfortable ear plugs ever also.

Depending on how much bass I want, I switch between them and the Razer ear plugs. They're both comfy.
