Any multiplayer game I've ever played with a Spy class and/or snipers was always 90% Spies/snipers on pubs (and in TF, it was spies disguised as snipers  rolleyes).  The allure of covert ops and backstabbing is very strong, apparently.
In QuakeWorld TF Spies were not all that common. I know, I played a Medic and guarded the ramps up in 2fort4 and would whack everybody that went past me to check to make sure they weren't spies. Snipers, however, were very popular.

So is this game actually ever going to come out or are they just jerking our chains by practicing their teaser trailer skillz?

I've been asking that since they released a teaser to PC Gamer.

Which was a totally different game back then (more like what BF2 is now).

I'm aware. It's been ten years. I've ceased caring what they put out at this point.

If they don't have a faithful 2fort4 adaptation, someone's gonna wake up with a horse head in their bed. Well6 and 2tech3 would be nice too.
Er, you did see the teaser trailer, right? The map may look familiar to you.

Episode One was decent. A little too short for my tastes and too heavy on the use of odd gameplay gimmicks (directing Alyx with the flashlight. I would've liked it more had it just been something you used on and off as you progressed (dark/light areas, frequent changes between each) but you spend long stretches standing in place pointing at stuff.

Just loaded up The Steam now, and was going to purchase EP1, since it's supercheap atm. Then 2 things occured to me. Does the disc version of Ep1 have anything extra to the Steamed one? And am I perhaps better off waiting till Ep2 comes out to get the almost-guaranteed-to-happen get-both-deal since I likely won't get around to playing 1 it for awhile anyways?

Looks nice, too bad it will be bundled with steam and adds so I won't be touching it.
There's still people like you left? How...quaint.

I wont touch Steam and I wont touch Ads. Fortunately the games that come to Aus seem to have their ads stripped so that's that out. It still needs Steam though and fuck that.

I dont know about the ad's, but I love steam.  It started out buggy and laggy when they first launched it, and I was against it initially, but I've turned to a complete convert.  It runs perfect for me, downloading and playing games is fast and easy.  I never have any problems with it, and its actually pretty nice to be able to install the games on any computer I want without needing the CDs.  They are building up a good selection indie games as well, so I fully support it.

So is it just the ad's, or do you actually hate steam?  What is there to hate about it exactly?

Put me in that camp too.

You could probably root around here and find some of my old vitriol about Steam.  I hated it with a seething hate.

I now think it's fabulouso awesome splenda.

You also won't touch the apostrophe key, apparently.

Bold added by me of course. I was playing CS heavily when steam came out and got fucked sideways by it for ages, and then at one point I just decided I was done with Steam forever. I really don't care what they've done with it nowdays, I care that they felt fucking me over by putting a shitty, broken system into an already stable game that I'd been playing for years was perfectly fine. So since a few months of the Steam release I've not played a single game that requires Steam and never will. Yes that means no HL2, CSS, etc. And the ads, I don't like ads in the things I pay for. If I pay for a game that's the money you make from me, not what I payed plus advertising revenue.

Yeah I don't apostrophe wont because it doesn't feel like a concatenated word [EDIT: actually I'm thinking these are something other than concatenated words possibly, but I don't care enough to look it up]. What is a "wo", exactly? If the word was "willn't" I could go with some apostrophe there, but as it stands it just doesn't feel right to put it in, and it doesn't hurt the word any to leave it out. They should have just declared it a new word IMO. So there.

Also, Teleku "dont" use apostrophes either, why are you not chastising him, huh? I smell bias!

Yeah except "wont" is already an actual word that means "inclined" as in "I corrected your spelling error, as I am wont to do".

....except for the fact that the correct spelling of "won't" is actually "won't" rather than "wont".

That's what you get with a language that has evolved but now been formalised.

You missed the unspoken part of post where I basically say I realise that "won't" is the correct spelling but I spell it "wont" because to my mind that's how it should be. Now that's not a "I'm special so I spell it like this" kind of deal, like the guy who decided he was going to type in lowercase, it's literally how my mind figures it should be unless I stop to think about what I'm doing. I don't spellcheck my posts except for a week or 2 a while back when I decided I should but dropped it because I got bored of it throwing up a gamer term and then nothing. I write my posts in a stream of consciousness fashion and then I do a readover before I post it. If my mind can read over it without jarring it gets posted. Considering I spell at least 99.9999999% of my words correctly without trying, actual criticisms of my spelling can get the fuck off. Now I am/was operating under the assumption that people are/were joking, but if not it's really pathetic that you care enough I spelt one word wrong in a post on the internet.

Back to the topic - hasn't CS always been a free mod if you have HL1?

CS and TF have always been free/bundled mods.

Wow, I'm surprised by all these people who didn't play much TF back in the 90s.  Oh well, I'll probably end up getting it if its part of Ep2 and I'm short of stuff to do...

I think I was busy playing CS at the time, either that or UO, both those games blanked out a lot of time back in the 90s and early 2000s.

CS wasn't around at the time. The original TF was a qw release in late '96. I have fond memories of getting owned at it over and over and over and over and over AND OVER again. Like Yoru said, the half-life mod was shit.

As a matter of fact I swallowed one of these about two hours ago and the explanation is that it is, in fact, my hand.

On the topic of in-game ads, were they totally stripped out of the Australian release of BF2142? And does that version still have the spyware on it?

According to the wiki, Australian law prevents in-game ads from being used.  But who knows?

Someone who played it? :P

Yeah all the ads and spyware was stripped from bf2142 for Australia. The billboards instead had game-related propaganda like "the PAC are coming!" with a PAC soldier standing there and suchlike.

Ah ok then,

It might even be worth me checking it out then. Honestly, the Spyware was an even bigger issue for than the ads. Though the ads alone are enough to have kept me from buying it...
