This is my game of the moment, and as I'd never heard of this indie game before i saw a link in another forum I thought it was worth passing on.

http://www.playfate.com

Its a cross between diablo and nethack, with randomly generated dungeon levels explored from a top down view in a 3d world. The gameplay is diablo like, clicking to move and attack, right clicks for spells, masses of mobs, frantic fights. You build your character as you level, and can go ranged, melee, caster and any combination of them depending on skill choice. There's an element of crafting, you can enchant additional attributes and sockets onto items with gems available for the sockets. Each enchant has an element of risk, you can lose all enchantments or have curse attributes added to your item as well.

You have a cool little pet (in my case a dog who is also levelling up with me) and can change it into a tougher creature for a limited time using fish you can catch or buy. It has its own inven and you can send it back to town to use a merch, a nice touch. More control is being added from what i can tell from reading the forums.

Theres not too much of a story or plot, just work your way deeper through i think a thousand levels, kill armies of mobs and collect piles of loot. It has given me a big quest to head down 40 levels to kill a boss which varies depending upon character and there's collect/kill quests given out my npcs in the base town. Very much shades of nethack, the main goal seems to be just how deep you can go into the dungeon.

The only downside is the lack of multiplayer, an option for co-op or a small LAN game would have been welcome.

Support is kinda cool, its a one guy operation and he's active on its forum and its patched regulary.

Its a great indie game, and worth getting the small download (130mb), especially if like me your a D2 fan. You cant get your character above level 6, or go below dungeon level 3 in the demo (20 USD to unlock) but its certainly enough to decide if you like it enough to buy.

It's...partly...from...Wild Tangent.

Of all the "indy" companies - they are the fucking devil. DEVIL DEVIL DEVIL SPYWARE DEVIL EVIL DEVIL. BLARGH.

That said, I'm gonna get a copy to review. I'm a diablo whore. I've bought the game + the expansion 4 times. I will not lose the last one I bought..i swear.

I gave it a shot and it's certainly Diablo-like (though I like the classlass aspect). I enjoyed it right up to the point where it told me I couldn't go any further in my demo mode, but I didnt' really like it so much that I'm tempted to pay another AU$35.

Now I'm tempted to go play ADOM again...

Ah yeh Wildtangent. Fucking fuckers. I want to play a good game not give them permission to run apps in my startup.

I had to remove cdaEngine0400.dll from my Start/Run key, and play about with Hijackthis. There's shedloads of of pages offering help for removal on Google and I apologise for not mentioning it in my original post.

Wildtangent is completely benign these days and is only used for DRM.  I didn't have a problem with it uninstalling with the game(I didn't have Wildtangent on my computer before it though, so maybe there are old versions out there).

I played this game a week or so ago.  I didn't end up purchasing it because it was too easy and the random number generator was too random, i.e. you could fish for 10 mins and get items that are literally worth tens or hundreds of thousands of gold.  I didn't even abuse this and I never bothered leveling up and got to dungeon level 6 and still wasn't struggling.  I didn't find any compelling reason to play it over Nethack and Nethack has way more replayability.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that. It is absurdly easy, even on the hardest difficulty level. While I was playing reasonably gung-ho I found few times when I had even a chance of dying, and reaching the demo cap on the first level of the game and having equipment that made the rest terribly easy didn't add much to it either.

I just tried this.  If there's a way to play with keyboard (mostly) for movement and such, I'd play on, but without it is just too painful.  I can't play mouse clicky games without causing trouble in my wrist/thumbs.

Seemed fun.

Now, do I have to run hijackthis to get rid of stuff after I uninstall or will the uninstall get rid of the all it should?

There's no spyware. Just uninstall it if you don't like it.
