I don't know if I recommend it to you guys, but do check it out. Guy's spent like 6 years doing double jobs on this. Today, Thursday, March 22nd 2012, the Age of Decadence public beta (also knows as the demo) has been released. Finally.
We had a preview, as you may remember.
Currently it seems they're having problems with their SugarSync bandwidth.
"The public link you were sharing (below) violates the SugarSync Terms of Use or exceeds our allowable bandwidth: Because of this violation, we have disabled the link permanently. In addition, your other public links (including new links you create) will be temporarily disabled for the next 24 hours.
"Thanks for using up all our bandwidth in 2 min, you arseholes! That's why we can't have nice things.
Anyway, I'll report new download links as they become available.
For the time being I have the official press release from Vince D. Weller himself.
Fuck press-releases. I hate that phony shit. "Here is the link. Go nuts."
Links for the public beta: Rapidshare Atomic Gamer Here's a torrent Demonoid torrent My impressions: You enter the merchant's bedroom. He stood there in terror as you draw your blade. His body guard several paces away. The night is young, your blade glints in the darkness.
Do you have Critical Strike at 40? If so, turn to page 43 to use it on the merchant.
Do you have Intimidation at 45? If so, turn to page 59 to use it on the merchant.
Do you wish to engage in combat? If so, turn to page 90 to begin the combat scenario.
*Hmm this is a hard choice...I better set a book mark here before trying combat*
So I died in combat. Yep. Let's flip back to last page again...hmmm. Ok. Let's try Critical Strike this time! I'm sure it'll turn out well. *Invest skill points on Critical Strike*
*Flips to page 43*
You quietly bend forward, swinging your blade upwards as the merchant's eyes follows your upper torso instead of your right hand. Crimson shower gushed as you withdrew your dagger from what was once his windpipe.
His bodyguard stood agape.
Do you wish to engage him in combat? If so, turn to page 23
Do you wish to tell him to leave? If so, turn to page 36 Link: http://www.irontowerstudio.com/

Yeah I don't like it at all. Combat is too random for my taste , and using dialogue skills seem like just bypassing of content. I don't feel the fun in this game.

I bet you said that about fallout 1 and 2 as well.

If that was supposed to make me want to play the game it really just achieved the opposite.

THe author is rpgcodex regular if i'm not mistaken, so the game follows certain views on what makes a 'good rpg'.

Would 'inexplicable and unavoidable death' be one of those qualities?

Picked drifter as starting point and... it's rather enjoyable. Disclaimer: i generally don't mind reloading the same combat scenario a few times to explore different tactics and get favourable outcome, so that doesn't bother me. And don't mind the idea of regular enemies being equal with your character which makes bigger fights hard. The guy who made it has spent way too much time and effort on those situation-tailored screens telling you in minute details all the ways you suck, whenever you die
