I see a Team Fortress 2 Free Week on Steam right now...but I don't see any mention of a permanent switch. Doesn't mean it isn't true, but I'm slightly skeptical at the moment.

Fair enough - Valve has probably made loads of money from this game over time. I only play on 2 servers, so I don't see a problem.
Heck, they've gotten enough cash from me just with the stupid keys...I'm a sucker for gambling.

It was at least twice as long as the other videos have been. There were some very funny moments, but they're farther apart than necessary.

Was only a matter of time. I've run into this so much today: http://botchweed.com/game-news/new-team-fortress-2-plugin-blocks-free-players/Yesterday, Valve began offering their class-based multiplayer shooter Team Fortress 2 for free after four years of offering it as a paid product. At the time, Valve promised that free players would receive “exactly the same” gaming experience, with the exception of a few technical limitations on free accounts related to the game’s item system. However, in less than a day, a user-made server plugin has been created to restrict free players from joining servers altogether.
The mod, when installed by a server owner, automatically kicks anyone playing the free version of Team Fortress 2. The only way to play on servers with this plugin installed is to own a premium copy of Team Fortress 2. Players who paid for the full version of the game have premium access, as well as those who have spent money on items at the in-game store. http://forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?t=160049Are you fed up with your server full of people that don't know one end of the direct miss from the other?
People that feel the need to just keep coming back after you permaban them?

While I think they're a bunch of whining sissies...it IS their server, which they pay for, so...it's well within their rights to limit access. Sort of like the reserved slots on some servers, which will kick non-donators if the server is full and a donator joins.

Yeah, while it's well and good for Valve to offer the game for free, I don't think server operators should be obligated to offer their bandwidth for free. Anyone is able to run their own server if they don't like the treatment they're getting on someone else's.

The ability to circumvent permabans is on its own a pretty understandable reason to not want f2p players on your server.

That often results in things like 'oops we banned the entire population of this university' and things like that, targeted banning is much much better when you can get away with it. |

TBH, Valve should have offered this as a setting for personally hosted servers. While increasing the farm of servers they host themselves.

That's why we have metamod. It's all of one click to add the premiere player mod. Valve has also added a huge number of servers as well to deal with the new players.
There's also a whole system that rolled out with the Uber update for setting up your server to be a "Quickplay" server which is opt in for server admins. Everything I've seen so far is Valve is trying to be good to their server operators.
